Mrs. Maxine W. ThurmondMRS. MAXINE W. THURMOND, widow of Mr. Earl H. Thurmond, Sr. transitioned on Thursday, October 27, 2016. She is also predeceased by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson (Maggie Tyler) Wilson and Godson Otis Q. Copeland, III.
She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her home going four children and their spouses: Dr. Maggie Thurmond (Keith) Dorsey, Dr. Earl H. (Phyllis) Thurmond, Jr. (Lithonia, GA), Rev. Da’Henri R. (Antoinette) Thurmond, Sr. (Richmond Hill, GA), Dr. Kimberly Thurmond (Corey) Bowdre (Weymouth, MA); grandchildren and spouses Michael (Myisha) Dorsey (Knoxville, TN), Daniel (Victoria) Dorsey (Thomasville, GA), David (Dr. Sparkle) Dorsey (Aiken, SC); grandchildren D. Ramsey Thurmond, Jr., Barbara Maxine “Maxie” Thurmond, Corey O. “CJ” Bowdre, Jr., Chase O. Bowdre; great-grandchildren: Morgan J. Dorsey, Maxwell J. Dorsey and Hailey V. Dorsey; brother-in-law Marion (Nora) Thurmond (Williamsville, NY); sisters-in-law: Mrs. Margaret Thurmond (East Orange, NJ), Mrs. Lillian Thurmond-Jackson (East Orange, NJ), Ms. Joan Thurmond, Ms. Barbara Jones (Monroe Township, NJ) and Dr. Maureen Walker (Mr. Bill Larkin) (Natick, MA); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, long-time caregiver Mrs. Janet Peterson and God daughter Mrs. Rosetta Buena Ephrain.
Cousin Maxi was frequently called by Mrs. Linda Edney Wiley and had special telephone “buddies” including Mrs. Vivian Clayburn, Mrs. Algalee Copeland and Mrs. Mabel Perry. She was checked on frequently by nephews Dr. Carl (Theresa) Thurmond and Rev. Dr. Ronnie (Linda) Mabry. Mrs. Thurmond was the recipient of expert, compassionate medical care by Dr. Benjamin Rucker, Dr. Donald Loeble, Dr. Mark Smith and Nurse Practitioner Mrs. Doris Sturcken. Mrs. Thurmond enjoyed eating at S & S Cafeteria and being served by Thomas; Wife Saver and being served by Kirk; Goolsby’s Restaurant and being served by Deborah and Nicky.
Mrs. Thurmond was a retired elementary school teacher from the Richmond County Public School System. She taught at Silas X. Floyd, Clara E. Jenkins and Bayvale Elementary Schools. It was common for her to be recognized and acknowledged by former students who remembered her as a caring teacher who went beyond the call of duty. She was a member of Trinity C. M. E. Church. Her participation in the ministries at Trinity over many years included Sunday School pianist and Buds of Promise to name just two. Maxine was a Life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Xi Omega Chapter. She was a former member of many other organizations including: Charter member and past president of Augusta Chapter, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Women’s Civic Club, Sand Hills Neighborhood Association and Richmond County Retired Educators.
Maxine was educated in the public schools of Richmond County. She attended C. T. Walker and Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. She graduated with the first class of Lucy Craft Laney, 1950. She was a proud 1954 graduate of Paine College where she was active in the Drama Club. Due to the racial climate of the 1950’s, she and her husband traveled to New York University and earned their Masters Degrees. She and Earl, first generation college graduates, created a nurturing home where worshiping God was non-negotiable and academic excellence was an expectation.
Maxine was a strong, independent, wise and loving mother, grandmother and “GG.” Her legacy of love lives on through her family, friends and the many other lives she impacted.

“She Loved ”maxine w. thurmond loved people. she loved
not Just her family, whom she simply adored, but
all people. she loved the students she instructed
durinG her 43 year teachinG career. she loved the
people at her church and those who did not attend
church. she loved her sorority sisters and Just
“sistahs.” it didn’t matter who they were or who
they weren’t, maxine loved and had no reluctance
in demonstratinG it. she showed her love by what
she Gave- a smile, a kind word, an opportunity or
money. she loved and she Gave. on october 27,
maxine tyler wilson thurmond was called home
to be with the lord, whom she loved, served and
worshiped her entire life.
