THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S ANNUAL PALM BEACH GALA, CIRQUE DU PALM BEACH II ENCORE!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to an-nounce that Geri and Frank Morrow will return to chair the Annual Palm Beach Gala.

The gala will take place on January 19, 2013 at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. The evening’s theme, Cirque du Palm Beach II-Encore! promises to be an over-the-top spectacular event with amazing cirque entertainment and dancing to the fabulous “soul survivors” orchestra.

Last year, Mr. and Mrs. Morrow were able to help LLS raise more than $750,000 through their tireless efforts in securing fantastic auction items and obtaining generous support from pa-trons and sponsors. “We are thrilled that Geri and Frank have agreed to chair our gala once again. With their commitment and leadership, our 2013 Gala is sure to be another exciting and financially successful event. We sincerely ap-preciate their commitment to our mission,” said Pam Payne, Executive Director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Palm Beach Area Chapter.

All proceeds from Cirque du Palm Beach II-Encore! will benefit LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. While this event will raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer re-search, it will also help support our local patients and their families by providing critically-needed financial aid.

For more information on Cirque du Palm Beach II-Encore!, please contact Nancy Klein, Campaign Director, at 561.775.9954 or [email protected].

Janet and Mark Levy Cocktail Event, December 5, 2012University of Miami Miller School of MedicineDepartment of Neurology: Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Cognitive Disorders

Dr. Ralph SaccoProfessor and Olemberg Chair of Neurology, Executive Director of the McKnight Brain Institute and Chief of Neurology, Jackson Memorial Hospital, opened the program with a presentation on stroke. He emphasized that although stroke is a major public health issue, few people recognize the warning signs. He explained that an easy way to remem-ber the warning signs is to use the word FAST, which stands for Face, Arm, Speech and Time. If one side of the Face is droop-ing, one Arm is weak and the Speech is slurred or strange, act FAST and call 911 immediately as Time is limited to only 4.5 hours for early treatments. The Univer-sity of Miami has cutting edge research and treatments for acute stroke care and prevention. From using new devices to open up clogged arteries, to research trials using stem cells to enhance recovery, to new studies unraveling the genetic factors that can lead to stroke, the doctors at UHealth are some of the nations best in treating and preventing stroke.

Dr. Carlos SingerProfessor of Neurology and Chief of Movement Disorders Division, talked about advancements in the study and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. He in-troduced the audience to UM’s Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Dis-orders, which has been under his direction since 2002, and offers specialized medical diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. He explained that while there is much work to be done to identify the factors that cause Parkinson’s disease, we have learned how, with medications, to control symptoms. These treatments are effective in halting the progression and moderating the symptoms of the disease, mostly by increasing the levels of dopamine in the brain For those whose symptoms do not respond to the usual medical treatments, UM also offers state of the art neurosurgi-cal therapies including deep brain stimula-tion for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

Dr. Clinton WrightAssociate Professor of Neurology and Scientific Director, Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute and Chief, Division of Cognitive Disorders, discussed trends in Alzheimer Disease detection and treat-ment. He pointed out that while there is no effective treatment for Alzheimer disease, drug and non-drug treatments may help with both cognitive and behav-ioral symptoms. Researchers are looking for new strategies to alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life for people with dementia. A worldwide quest is under way to find new treatments to stop, slow or even prevent Alzheimer disease. Because new drugs take years to produce from concept to market—and because drugs that seem promising in early-stage studies may not work as hoped in large-scale trials—it is critical that Alzheimer disease and related dementias research continue to accelerate.

One of Show Business’ Longest Playing Brother/Sister Acts Ends After 60 YearsDonald Craig McArt, D.D., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012

A diminutive man with large, prominent ears, Donald Craig McArt, known as “Bunny” to his friends and as an extra modest fellow to all who knew and loved him, passed away as gently and graciously as he lived his life on –Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Don McArt was a genial co-host and frequent star at Jan

McArt’s Royal Palm Dinner The-atre in Boca Raton, Fla., for 11 years. His long-term acting career began on Broadway with George Ab-bott’s Kiss and Tell. He also enjoyed a full career in television dating from a 1956 appearance in Alfred Hitch-cock Presents, as well as a movie career under Disney contract that included a comic role as a football player in Son of Flubber.

In addition to being a popular moti-vational speaker, McArt spent the last four years on a U.S. and Cana-dian tour of the critically acclaimed one-man show, Say Goodnight Gra-cie, as George Burns. He was sched-uled to appear this coming January once again with sister Jan McArt in her Play Reading Series presentation of Back Stage Story by playwright Tony Finstrom at the Wold Perform-ing Arts Center on the Lynn Univer-sity campus in Boca Raton, Fla.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, McArt spent many of his growing years in Anderson, Ind., a small General Motors town north of Indianapolis, Ind. After school, McArt became a newscaster/disc jockey at NBC affiliate WEOA in Evansville, Ind., before venturing to New York, where he attracted the at-tention of legendary stage director George Abbott.

McArt began his long time acting career when Abbot engaged McArt for his first

Broadway role in Kiss and Tell. He contin-ued to perform in the Broadway and na-tional companies of Pajama Tops, Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and There’s A Girl In My Soup with Don Ameche, Dana Andrews, Virginia Mayo, John Agar, Jean Paul Belmondo, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Margaret O’Brien, June Wilkinson and Patty McCor-mick, among others.

Don McArt is survived by brother Dr. Bruce (Katie) McArt of Elkhart, Ind.; sister Jan McArt of Boca Raton, Fla.; nieces Deborah Lahr (John) Lawlor of Boca Raton, Fla. and Kristin McArt (Al) Genske of Sobbieski, Wisc.; nephews Kevin (Heidi) McArt of Elkhart, Ind. and Scott McArt of Houston, Tex. and David (Rita) McArt of Green Bay, Wisc.; grandnieces Katharine
