  • Ask the Watercolor Doctor by Carol Z. Brody NWS, TWSA

    [email protected]

This month's column is a continuation of last month's, in which I wrote about taking a photo of one of your paintings and cropping it on your phone and getting it ready to submit to a show. Here I will discuss the way to do all of that on your computer. I have an old Apple laptop, but it works well for me. My directions are based on the way I do it on my computer, but I hope they are adaptable to whatever computer system you have.

As I said last month, place your painting on the floor, in a good indoor or outdoor light, and take a photo of it, trying for as little distortion of the shape of the paper as possible! In fact, take several, and be sure to leave a small amount of background around them. Then email them to yourself. Next, view the images and select the best, least distorted one or two, and drag them to the desktop screen, where you will work on them. Close your email.

Now double click on the chosen image to open it. (I look for the least distorted one.) On the top left of my screen, I see various icons, which we'll use. First, find and use the one that allows you to flip the image so that you can right it. Now look for an icon which looks like a little suitcase and says "Show Markup Toolbar." Click that. On the left, see a small blue dotted square. When you hover over it, see "Rectangular Selection", which you want to click on. You will see a little cross with horizontal and vertical intersecting lines. It's a crop tool.

Carefully place that on the upper left outer corner of your image, and drag it diagonally across your image to the lower right corner and let go. You'll see a blue dotted outline, showing the boundaries of your painting that you have now created. Click the word "crop", and your image will be cropped to that new size. Play with it, and perhaps do one side at a time, starting at different corners, cropping each time, till you have cropped off all the background material. If you make a mistake and loose too much of your image, you can email another image to yourself again and do this again. All isn't lost. It takes a little practice, but you'll get the hang of it soon. When you close that screen, your newly cropped image will appear on your desktop. Voila!

Next month I'll discuss the way to adjust the color and the size of your work, and to label your painting for a show. I know this all seems complicated, but it does become easier to do with repetition. The thing to remember is that you are learning to make the strongest, most professional looking image of your work that you can, to present to a competition!

    A Step-by-Step Guide to a Zoom Meeting

If you haven’t already received an email inviting you to a Zoom meeting, you probably will soon. In this age of social distancing, many groups are choosing to meet virtually, and Zoom is one of the most popular ways to do this. It might be your book club, your volunteer group, or your Sunday school class, but chances are you’re going to be part of a Zoom meeting.

Zoom is a computer program used to hold online virtual meetings. You can use Zoom on a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop, or a desktop computer (as long as you have a camera, speakers, and a microphone). It uses your computer’s or phone’s camera to show live video of all attendees

You can just display your name). Zoom uses your computer’s or phone’s microphone to let you talk to other meeting participants. If you do not have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can use a phone to dial into a meeting.

This article only covers joining and participating in a Zoom meeting that you’ve been invited to. If you want to know more about more advanced Zoom features like changing your background, raising your hand in a meeting, sharing your screen, and hosting your own meeting go to Zoom’s Support Center support.zoom.us/hc/en-us

DOWNLOAD ZOOMZoom is a program that runs on your computer, phone, or tablet. You must download this program from the Zoom website. The free version of Zoom should meet all of your needs.

If you’ve received an email invitation to a Zoom meeting, click the link that says, “Join Zoom

this link will take you to a website where you can download the Zoom program or app, depending on what device you’re using.

    1

    continued on next page

On an iPhone or iPad: Go to the Apple App Store and search for “ZOOM Cloud Meetings.” Click “Get” to download and install the Zoom app.

The Zoom app in the App Store

On an Android phone or tablet: Go to the Google Play App Store and search for “Zoom Cloud Meetings.” Click “Install.”

On a computer: On the Download Center website zoom.us/download, click “Download” in the “Zoom Client for Meetings” section.

Click the blue Download button to download Zoom from the website zoom.us/download

After Zoom is downloaded, you must install it onto your computer.

If you have an Apple computer, like a MacBook: Double-click the file called Zoom.pkg, which is typically saved to your Downloads folder. The installer program opens and guides you through the process.

If you have a PC: Double-click the file called ZoomInstaller.exe file to install the program.

Double-click ZoomInstaller.exe to install Zoom on your PC.

  • PARTICIPATE IN A MEETINGOnce you’ve joined the meeting, you can see and hear other participants. Each participant is represented by a square that displays their face (if they’ve chosen to join with video) or just their name.

If you’re in a large meeting, make sure your microphone is muted. Your computer microphone is pretty sensitive, and if you’re unmuted, it can pick up a lot of background noise. The mute button, which looks like a microphone, is in the bottom left corner of the Zoom screen. If the microphone has a red line through it, you’re muted, and no one in the meeting can hear you.

If the microphone has a red line through it, you are muted.

Click the button again to unmute yourself if you want to talk in the meeting.

If the microphone has no red line through it, you can be heard in the meeting.

Only one person in the meeting can talk at a time. Zoom indicates who is speaking by highlighting their image with a yellow square.

There is also a chat feature in Zoom, where you can type messages to other participants. Participants can send messages to everyone in the meeting, or just certain participants. However, after the meeting, the host can view the transcript of all chats, so it’s not entirely private. If there is a message for you in the chat, a notification appears on the Chat button, which looks like a speech bubble. Click that button to open the chat window.

LEAVE A ZOOM MEETINGClick “Leave Meeting” on the bottom right corner to leave the meeting.

JOIN A MEETINGAfter you install Zoom, there are a few different ways to join a Zoom meeting. You can click the link in your invitation email, go to the Zoom website and enter the meeting ID, or dial into the meeting on a phone.

Click the link in an invitation email: If you have an email invitation, click “Join Zoom Meeting” in that email. This takes you to the Zoom website.

Go to the Zoom website: Go to zoom.us/join, and enter the 9-digit meeting ID from your invitation email. If the meeting requires a password, that will be in your email, too.

When you are on the Zoom website, if you are asked if you want to open Zoom, click “Open zoom.us.” Zoom opens, showing you a preview of your camera image. Then click either “Join with Video” or “Join without Video.” If you use video, other people in the meeting will see you. If not, they will just see your name. Next, Zoom asks about audio. Click “Join with Computer Audio” so you can hear and be heard in the meeting.

Dial into the meeting on a phone: If you don’t have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can use a phone to dial into the meeting. The phone number to use will be in your invitation email, or you can find the number to use in the Zoom International Dial-in Numbers list zoom.us/zoomconference.

  • In Memory of Paula Adams You can honor Paula’s legacy by making a donation to

    the PBWS Scholarship Fund. ♥

It is with profound sadness that we share news that Paula Adams, past Board member and long-time member and volunteer of Palm Beach Watercolor Society, passed away last week. Her husband, Archer Jarrett “Jarry” Adams III, passed away too.

"Paula Adams found joy in helping other people, her life defined the word VOLUNTEER. She chose to be in the background, literally you could find her in the last row at the monthly PBWS meetings. Her organizational skills were legendary and her energy was boundless. Whether setting up or taking down fellow artists paintings, she always did it with the utmost care. Paula hosted exhibits at the Art Guild and at the Delray Public Library using the skills she acquired from her experiences in the catering world. Often after an exhausting art class at the Boca Raton Museum Art School, she would assist the instructor with the task of loading up their car, knowing they too wanted to get home and relax with their family.

Paula was known for her art series, "Stripes and Faces", which was both realist and abstract. One geometric painting was a self-portrait of her profile. Her self-portrait picture featured the infamous bump on her nose. Years ago she found herself face to face with Charlton Heston, in a turnstile at a tennis match. He exclaimed, "Well... now I know what my sister would have looked like if I had a sister.” Paula created countless homemade greeting cards for "EVERYBODY” always commenting on their lives or their special event in brilliant colored magic markers. It was common practice for Paula to introduce students from 8 years old to retirement age to the world of art, often setting them up with basic materials from her own pocket. She was a natural recruiter for PBWS, her love of art was infectious. She loved beauty in all forms especially in nature. She once remarked that God was the father of art. The movie, "Words and Pictures" was one of her favorites and she watched it many times.

Paula was often asked to assist fellow artists in titling their works. She was known for being able to come up with just the right name. Correct grammar, word usage, spelling and tense were important to Paula. She often reported such violations of the English language to the Sun Sentinel. Paula also volunteered her language skills to the PBWS, which they were pleased to receive. Paula often kidded that she was OCD at its finest.

Paula always did everything in an excellent way and with a great and generous heart. What better way to honor her memory than through offering a scholarship in her name.”
