IrememberthefirstmeetingwehadwiththeteamatPalmLakes.Wewerepitching to do the estate magazine and i won’t lie, we were a tad nervous. WevisitedtheofficesinRey’sParkinBallitoandshuffledintotheboardroomwith all the renderings and maps on the wall. the estate was massive and the opportunity was tangible. it was an important time for us as a business, as we had signed a few estates and the future was looking very promising, butgettingthePalmLakesmagazinewouldmoveusintoadifferentleague.in fact the timing was that good, that getting the agreement to go ahead would make us the second biggest publisher of estate based magazines in the country....you can imagine the nerves! (since then we’ve gone on to be the biggest!) Well, you know the outcome of the meeting because you’re reading my editor’s letter…which means we did something right! the start of our relationship back then was a milestone for us, but more importantly we found a partnership with a group of people who were approachable, sincere and willing to allow us to grow with them. it’s been an amazing journey with Wim and olivia and their team and whilst we weren’t there from that very firstdaywesharetheirexcitement,passionanddelightastheycelebrate10years of Palm lakes - it’s like being part of a family, isn’t it? Ifwereflectbackonthepast10yearstherehasbeensomeexceptionalgrowth along with a few challenges but, for me, the one thing that seems to stand out is the tenacity of Palm lakes estate. this estate has become iconic on the north coast and its performance during the last few years has been unbelievable...it is one of the top performing estate in kzn, if not the country. We wish the team all the best for the next 10 years! We know they will continue to prosper and do amazing things in the estate....how great it is to be a part of the journey!

Palm lakes estate is 10 years young. exactly 10 years ago we were busy putting a lot of pressureonourcontractorstofinishourgatehouseandtheroaduptothefigtree, because we wanted this to be ready for the

launch on december 20. in mid-december we put up the 200m2marquee,whichwouldbecomeoursalesofficeforthe next eight years.

We launched at the peak of the property boom; on the firstdaywesold111standsand36apartments.Theconstructionofthefirst6.8kmsofroadsandservicesstartedinApril2006andfirsttransferswereregisteredinthefirstquarterof2007.That’swhenwestartedtobuild the 244 apartments, which were almost sold out mid-2008. and then the world went into recession and the property boom came to an end rapidly.

Palm lakes survived and mid-2012, when trinityhouse broke ground, our sales started to increase. today you all have seen the progress on the estate. in the last two years, we were selling quicker than we could build roads.

at the moment, rPPh is servicing 367 stands in the family estate and creating 135 opportunities in the retirement village.

TheroadworksatImpalaRidgehavestartedandthefirstphase of 28 units is almost sold out. soon we will release phase two.

IhopethatournewpoolsattheDragonflyclubhouseareready by the time you read this article.

over the past 10 years, a sugar cane farm was converted into a small town. the estate is now one of the top lifestyle estates on the north coast.

i would like to thank the rPPh management team and boardfortheirinputandeffortsoverthese10years.Butalso the professional team members who worked with us. i also have to thank nedbank who kept believing in us and supported us all these years. i thank all the trustees of the hoa for their work during all these years.a special thank to my wife olivia who supported me and the company from day 1 and played an important role up to this day.i also have to thank all our investors who keeps believing in our project and who have been very patient. and of course a big thank you to all the homeowners. Without them Palm lakes would not be where we are now.

i wish you all and your family a fantastic festive season and a prosperous 2016.

Can you believe it; here we are in the last quarter of 2015. and what a year it has been. one blinks and another year has gone. but

if you look at the development on the estate you cannot but help marvel at the growth rate.

i would once more like to remind all users of our roads in Palm lakes that the same rules apply in the estate, as on our regional and provincial roads.

a 4–way- stoP street means just that: stoP. We have had a circus on facebook and twitter about our good intentions to enforce this law. We will be installing cameras and appointing peace officerstoenforceourroadrules.Wehave a large proportion of our residents who are advocating ‘name and shame them’. i therefore appeal to you one more time: work with us to keep this a safe estate.

remember you have chosen to live on an estate and need to make yourself aware of all the rules. if you are not sure ofsomethingpleasecontactourofficeand ask for a copy.

Ifyouwanttore-paintyourhome,firstcheck which colours are allowed.

if you want to erect a fence or a screen wall, firstcheckwhatisallowed.

if you want to put in a pool or enclose your balcony, you need to submit plans to the drc and the municipality.

if you are not sure of what you may or may not plant in your garden contact andrew erasmus and discuss.

make sure you know the pet rules and have your pets registered with the hoa.

the directorate of rPPh and the trustees of the hoa have appointed the hoa management to run the estate, according to a set of rules, which we will do to the best of our ability. to keep this estate safe, clean, neat and a pleasure to live in we ask you all to work with us to achieve our goals and the goals of the fastest growing estate in kzn.

i once again want to congratulate chris garland and his team for a 100 percent safety record.

a good security system is integral to the wellbeing of the estate and the peace of mind of the residents.

Please report any perceived misuse of access cards and the like to the control room on 078 547 7182 or to chris garland on 082 887 0427.

also take note that no-one driving a motor vehicle or motorcycle will be allowed into the estate if they cannot produce their drivers’ licence when asked to do so.

also take note that no worker, sub contractor, removalcompanystaff, deliverystaffetc.willbeallowedtoenter the estate unless they have their valid sa id book with them. Photocopies are not acceptable.

do not let anyone in your family use your access card or hand it to a visitor. if picked up at the gates this card will be blocked immediately. this is for your safety and that of everyone living on this estate.

once more please take note of the following: the control room is manned 24/7/352andisyourfirstcontactpoint, especially after hours and over weekends and public holidays. their contact number is 078 547 7182.

TheHOAofficeisopenMondaytofriday 08h00 – 16h00. our contact numbers can be found under contact information on page 5.

Please feel free to contact us with any ideasthatyoufeelcanbenefittheestate.

i wish you and your families a blessed and safe christmas and a prosperous 2016.

nanto is a 25-year-old bundle of energy who hails from the small zululand town of eshowe. she is the newly appointed building co-ordinator for royal Palms Property holdings, for the estate’s fast developing retirement village. she is not only appointed as the new builder co-ordinator but she is also the Pa of Wim and olivia sak. she obtained her building diploma from the thekwini fet college and completed her internship at the ilembe department of health, where she met her partner.

as a younger woman she developed a love and passion for creating things so the progression into the building industry was a natural one.

nanto enjoys the team sports of hockey and soccer, with soccer clearly beingherfavourite.Onefindsthisoutveryquicklywhentalkingtoher.as a player she is knowledgeable about the game and is looking for a local women’s team to join. orlando Pirates is the team that she cheers forontheweekends(comeonChiefs!)…that’swhenshe’snotofftothemovies and the beach with her partner and children in tow. nanto is a resident on the estate with her children enrolled at trinityhouse.

kosie was appointed to his role in august this year to assist the hoa with the management of building sites and to help keep Palm lakes the safe family environment that it is.

kosie is part of the team from the company srm (safety risk management). srm has been involved with rPPh for a number of years in the development of Palm lakes estate.

he was born in Pietermaritzburg and is an old boy of dhs. kosie excelled in rugby and went on to represent the natal sharks u19 and u20 teams. rugby opened many doors for him and he was rewarded with a scholarship to hartpury collage in gloucestershire to study business management. a career-ending injury prevented him from playing club rugby in the uk and he had to return home. after a lengthy rehabilitation he made it backtothefieldofplaywherehewaspartoftheBereaRoversteam that won the national club rugby championship.

Meet the Neighbours

Durbanwasquiteadifferentplacein the 1940’s when mick and ingrid were born.

mike grew up on a small holding in hillary where his parents were

marketgardenersandflowergrowers.Thefamilyrelocated to malawi when he was a boy before returning to south africa as a young man to begin his faming carrier on melville sugar estate. mick then went on to farm sugar in the empangeni area for the next 38 years before retiring to Palm lakes.

mick and ingrid were married in 1967 and moved offintothesugarcanewildernessoftheNorthcoast with darnall being their neighbourhood for a while before moving further north into zululand.

ingrid, who grew up on the berea in durban and is a product of morris stella girls school, settled in well to farm life. there was really very little development and infrastructure up the north coast in those days and living in the country was hard work. While mick was out farming, ingrid worked for tongaat hullet sugar in their financedepartmentandlaterforanarchitectasadraughts person. they have many fond memories of farm life and the many family luncheons and birthday parties on the lawn under the shade of established trees in their zululand garden.

they have two children lee and tanya and are proud grandparents of two.

mick and ingrid participated in a lot of sport in their younger years and are still very active in retirement. mick is a keen golfer while ingrid is active in yoga, pilates and running. she has also signed up for the boot camp held on the astro turf twice weekly.

and so life moves on. after looking for a home to retire to for some time, Palm lakes was the last place they looked at and found instant value for their new life style. “the size of the foot print and generously spaced homes, is what attracted us”, sayMickandIngrid.Theywerethefirstcoupletomove into the retirement village and now that the “dust has settled” are enjoying the tranquillity and the bird life on the estate.

mick sits on the board of trustees for the retirement village.

Once upon a time i met a guy. his name was Wim sak. he was a sweet manufacturer, but he loved sa more than his sweets.

in may 2005, he took me for a short trip toSA.WhenweflewbacktoBelgiumhe asked me if i would be interested in immigrating to this sensational country. i was far too in love to say no…so in July 2005, we immigrated. the adventure started!

i would like to share with you some emotion and fun facts. ten years ago, rPPh – the development company of Palm lakes family estate, owned a large portion of land covered in sugarcane, located next totheTinleyManorofframp.

although the launch of Palm lakes estate went very well, we had a lot of problems duringthefirstyears.Itwashardwork.lots of negative stress! World recession, credit crunch and it seemed ballito residents needed some time before they accepted Palm lakes estate. Palm lakes was too far for them (exactly seven minutes’drivefromtheBallitoofframp).my husband often joked about it: ‘residents of Palm lakes need to take a backpack full of food and drinks when they travel to ballito’.

after 10 years, it’s important to thank all the people who have been on board since the beginning: 1. Jaime ernst, one of our inhouse sales consultants, was involved in Palm lakes before we even started . she was the sales agent when rPPh bought the land from a couple of farmers. 2.ColeenNaidoo,whosoldourfirststand,is still, after those 10 long years, an inhouse salesconsultantofthecompany.Herfirstclient was ritesh maharaj.3. chris garland, who started the implantation of our security plan, which continues to be one of our biggest sales points. 4. investors.5. the professional team: sergio and carlos mendes, hannes struwig, simon Williams, simon bundy, hsg conveyancers, breytenbach electrical engineers, stemele bosch and duval from tWc computers.

Some other interesting facts- mr sassi, retired embassador of german, wasthefirsthomeownertofinishhisstunning house. - our estate manager, chris matthews, was the fourth homeowner on the estate to finishanotherbeautifulhouse.- at the launch, we sold some pieces of land for r 150 000, and the cheapest apartment for r550 000. yebo! after 10 years, the most expensive house was sold for r3,5m.

ThehousewasbuiltbyGeoffChennels.- for years and years, the provincial road to Palm lakes was the national pothole road. it took my husband 1899 calls to the provincial department to get some beautiful results. -Mydaughter,Amelie,wasthefirstofficialpupil of trinityhouse. Who is surprised?- the landscaping of our entrance was done by lucas uys. he is quite a well-known landscaper and an international icon in the landscaping industry. -Ourfirstshowhousewasthefirsthouseon your right, when you drive into the estate.- the biggest house in the estate is owned by brad rayson: it is an absolute masterpiece. - on december 16 2005, one day after the launch, i took a picture of the newly built gatehouse with a rainbow falling into it…a sign of good luck, for sure! - did you know that our fenceline is 7.8 km long, and that our security guards patrol permanently? - 15 kms of road have been built on the estate.- thousands of jobs were created while building roads, houses and apartments, not to mention a few hundred jobs created in the form of domestic workers, landscaping, security and maintenance.

Palm Lakes and Celebrities- do you know that we bought land from micky and former miss World Penny rey (coelen). the most sexy senior couple of sa.-Ourfirstmodelsforourmarketingphotographs were aJ venter (former springbok player) and Jenna Worlock (two-time winner of fittest Woman in the World).- dominique donner, one of the best friends of charlene, Princess of monaco, lives in Palm lakes. -Thefigtreeonourbigcircle,usedtobelong to louis luyt. 2010 was preparing to host the fifa World soccer cup. We had 19 completed homes on the estate with 14 under construction and we now had 190 families living on the estate. in september we introduced our impala herd at Palm lakes.

2011 saw the new kiddie’s clubhouse, to be known as ‘mini Palms’, was under construction. We were also very proud as we now had 251 families living on the estate.

2012. on may 14, 2012 a great new milestone was reached when the contractors moved on site to start building the new school: trinityhouse Palm lakes. We now had 274 families living on the estate. 2012 was also the year that we undertook the r7million project of laying our own electric cables from the shakaskraal substation to Palm lakes. this ring-feed of 8.4 kilometres is two underground 33 000 volt cables that increased our access to power from 2mva to 7mva in phase one and brought huge relief as our power problems were reduced to a minimum. 2012 also saw rPPh, Palm lakes retirement village.

by april 2013, we had 72 homes completed which jumped to 91 homes completed by the end of the year. our town-house development known as ‘sun-set Place’ was well underway and we started building our new dams. We also started laying out all the new roads and services to open up the rest of the estate.

2014. this was a big year as we reached 500 transfers, bearing testament to the success of this superb lifestyle estate. this called for a very special party and a surprise party was organised by olivia for her husband Wim sak. We launched three new residential phases which represented 284 residential opportunities and sales were unbelievable. by march we had 120 homes built with 57 under construction, and 256 sectional title units. by July this had increased to 131 homes completed with a further 70 under construction. by october 2014 the figuresatat146homescompletedwith94underconstruction.Thesectionaltitleunitshadincreasedto262unitswith another 12 under construction. construction on the homes in the retirement village was progressing well and the furnished show house was open. a lot of interest was shown in this new development with steady sales. the lap-Pool at mini-Palms was opened on april 23 to lots of fanfare. We arranged a reciprocal agreement with trinityhouse, allowing them to use the lap-pool for training, while the residents of Palm lakes had access to their tenniscourts.LateinOctoberPalmLakestiedupadealwithAlessandroCraparo,acoffeeconnoisseurwithaPHDincoffeephysiology,toopenourownveryspecialboutiquecoffeeshopknownastheTheScienceOfCoffee.Thebeanroasterisonsiteandthesmellanddifferentcoffeeexperiencesareamust.

as we approach the last quarter ofwe realise we have never stopped to even

catch our breath. development on the estate is unbelievable and we are rated as one of the busiest estates in south africa.

our one major news event in 2015 is that we have signed with vodacom toinstallfibretothehomethankstoJean marais. this will guarantee us fast, reliable broadband. the vodacom fibre is the next generation of internet.

on June 30, we had the opening of our world class astroturf football arena, thanks to merlin and Jason from multi group. the 5-a-side pitch comprises anartificialturfcarpetthatmeetsthe5-a-sidesizeandspecificationsandisinternationally recognised. on august 9 we had the opening of the retirement village clinic run by aldem health care (Pty) ltd, which will serve the residents of the retirement village.

all our new phases on the south side of the estate have been sold out, even before the roads and services have been completed. We have decided to openphase1FbehindtheDragonflyclubhouse that will be reached by the new road being built from the circle with the baobab tree running due east. this will release a further 88 stands.

rPPh has also started to build another 30 sectional title units and free standing houses.

rPPh has taken over the development to be known as impala ridge which will comprise 80 town houses, a clubhouse and swimming pool.

We have just completed an upgrade on the mini Palms clubhouse and are busy with a new kiddies’ pool with a lazy river attheDragonflyClubhousethatwillbefinishedintimefortheDecemberholidays.

in early 2016 we will be adding a 60 square meter facility with ablutions nexttothenewpoolattheDragonflyclubhouse and will do extensions to the kitchen.

trinityhouse has announced extensions to the school as grades four and 10 will be added in January 2016.

as we enter the last quarter of 2015 we are still waiting for the good rains to arrive.

the clouds build up, the winds blow as if it is still

august and we get a sprinkling of rain, just enough to keep the grass green and make the indigenous trees think it is time to burst forth with their spread of new green leaves.

our lakes are holding their own but will start dropping if we do not get a good downpour soon.

our birds are back into their summer dress with the weavers in their brilliant yellow and black; the cuckoos have returned and birds like the spotted groundthrushandfierynecked-nightjar,which were over-wintering in kzn, have left. the yellow-bill kites arrived on cue, on august 25.

our swallows are arriving by the day and very soon you will be able to have your sun-downers watching the masses at sunset as they settle down in the reed-bed at mount moreland.

in our last magazine i did a write up on indigenous trees, shrubs and ground covers to plant. We encourage you to plant indigenous and insist that 70 percent of your garden should be so planted. indigenous plants survive much better in our warm climate, are hardy and once established need no care. if you need any advice or have questions as to what to plant or want guidance on your garden please contact andrew erasmus, our landscape manager, on 082 300 8587.

We will not accept new house plans without a landscape garden plan that has been drawn up by one of our appointed landscape designers.

they are: clair latham (083 502 3825) louisa Johnson (083 463 7829) tracey riley from eco balance (032 815 1172) and rick from eblue landscapes (076 431 2784). We will also be addressing gardens that have been neglected, never planted up properly, and not maintained along our expected standards with home owners.

Please work with us on this as we want this estate to stand out high in the garden stakes.

tell us a bit about yourself. Why did you choose to become an educator and how do you keep your passion for teaching alive? Carolyn: i have loved children all my life; i babysat from the moment i was allowed to. ultimately, i believe the great teachers i have had have inspired me to create an ideal learning environment, starting in my own classroom, for others.

Darren: i’d always been involved in youth development. after i returned from the united kingdom, where i’d been working in the hotel industry, i had a dream that propelled me to study teaching. for me, it’s the honour of being entrusted with south africa’s most valuable resource – our children.

Share a bit of your background in the education sector. Carolyn: i taught at primary school level, was a grade one head and then a pre-primary school principal of my ownschoolforawhile, teachingthreetofiveyearolds.i went back to government teaching grade r, left to join trinityhouse randpark ridge and was honoured to open trinityhouse Palm lakes in 2013.

Darren: i studied at ukzn, edgewood campus and spent fiveyearsatCliftonCollegeinDurban, headinguptheirgeography department. later i moved to John Wesley Primary school as their deputy principal. Prior to joining trinityhouse Palm lakes i was the head of st benedict school. i have been at trinityhouse Palm lakes since april.

What has been the highlight of your time at trinityhouse Palm lakes, thus far? Carolyn: When i joined trinityhouse and saw that it actually was as great as i thought it would be. i love that we could create a new trinityhouse, here at Palm lakes and, of course, ourMakeaDifferencepartieswhereweinvite

children from neighbouring schools to spend a day with us. as we grow we are in a position to bless others in our community.

Darren: the spring day on Palm lakes estate, which the school organised with Prestige baby and Palm lakes estate – it was great receiving praise from residents. that, and watching our choir at the rotary choir festival. both were truly wonderful moments.

How do you believe the close proximity of the estate benefits the school? Carolyn: It’sanimmensebenefit.Fortheestateresidentsto know that there is a safe, nurturing environment on their doorstep is fantastic. also, for the residents – particularly those from the retirement village – to come and use our facilities, like the tennis courts, and enjoy the sound of children’s laughter…how wonderful.

Darren: it’s a win-win situation; younger families who move onto the state know that, when they do have children, there is a great school just minutes away.

What are your future hopes for trinityhouse Palm lakes?Carolyn: to continue growing, as we have been, but to remain true to what we believe. and to have fun while we’re at it.

Darren: to create a fun, happy environment we’d be happy to put our own children in. this is a family environment and we always say, you’ll fall in love the moment you walk through these doors. as teachers, we want to keep that alive.

We wish darren and carolyn all the best as they develop and grow trinityhouse Palm lakes.

the ftth project was conceptualised at Palm lakes just over a year ago, when the estate approached resident Jean marais, stortech regional manager, to act as a consultant. since the infrastructure for ftth is already in place at the estate, Jean says it was a matter of choosing a service provider to implement the project. several service providers submitted proposals to the home owner’s association, cellular giant vodacom came out tops.

the ftth project comes at no initial cost to the homeowner. in a letter of commitment, vodacom stated that it would invest the necessary capital for the project, provided a minimum of 40 percent of current residents signuptotheVodacomfibreservice.Thenetworkwillfurther invest for the planned expansion of the estate –

2300 homes once complete – again, provided a minimum of 40 percent of residents sign up.

according to Jean, 85 residents have signed up to date, giving vodacom the green light. Plans have been approved to build a communications room near the estate’s main gate, where the project will run from.

first, the ‘in-estate’ distribution network will be installed, following which each house will be connected through a two stage process: a vodacom representative will contact the home over to setup a home survey meeting to ensure the owner is happy. the second stage encompasses the physicalinstallationofthefibre, configurationandsetup.

Holiday Survival

Words Jodi van Wyk

Here they come: anywhere between two and four (six, if you’re lucky) weeks of

HoLidayS! it might seem a bit on the daunting side, and the days go so quickly! Before you blink, you’re back behind your desk ready for the new year. We’re going to help you out a bit; here is a comprehensive guide to surviving the festive season. Ready? Let’s go!

Gifts What do i get? What did i give them last year? These are the questions that start to pop up, accompanied by beads of sweat across your forehead. There’s no winning formula here, but there are a few rules of thumb you can follow to keep yourself in safe territory: • Be thoughtful, especially if it is somebody close to you. nothing is worse than a gift that is noticeably

unsuitable for someone. ask a few surreptitious questions if you need a hint. • don’t always resort to money. Eek! Unless you know the person would appreciate cash, or they specifically

asked for it, this could be considered impersonal. Rather get a gift voucher from their favourite store! • Prepare early! if the gift you want to get is going to take time, order it early. That will avoid that awkward

‘oops’ moment on Christmas morning.

101Feature

Page 41: Palm Lakes 16th Edition

Going Out if you have the whole family

staying over in one place, chances are everyone will have an idea of

where they would like to go, or what they want to do. So, to avoid a third

World War, try to: • Listen to everyone. allow all family

members – from the littlest person to the oldest – to have a say. Write down what everyone wants to do and

then try to accommodate them all. • Be fair. if you can visit more than one place in a day, go for

it. Try to spend an equal amount of time at each place to keep the playing fields level.

• Get smart. if you can divide the family up and let different groups visit the places they would like to, there’s your

solution. Make sure you meet up at the end of the day to hear about everyone’s stories.

Getting Along…Sigh. Setting the table and placing family members around it, especially if the group is large, can become quite a dicey operation. Here are some tips for working with the different personality types:• if you’re hosting, try to move around. Speak to

everyone individually, so each guest feels important and valued.

• keep the food coming. aside from the fact that it’s difficult to argue with your mouth full, food has a calming effect on frayed nerves and personalities.

• keep talking! Flowing conversation will keep the atmosphere light. as the host, make sure a steady stream of chatter is kept up and steer it away from anything that could cause a tiff.

load sheddingPart of livingWoRDS chris matheWs

We have all experienced it: supper is just about ready,

the kids are heavy into their homework, dad is playing catch-up on the latest sports news, and then Wham! We have load shedding.

fortunately in our new world we have options, at a price.

today one can install a full solar systemthatcantakeyouoffthegrid completely.

there are many options on the market and one has to look at them carefully, cutting through the sales talk etc. and, if necessary, get some expert advice before signing up for a product.

remember to discuss and get permission from Palm lakes management. in some cases you need to get plans passed by the design review committee so that we have conformity on the estate.

this is even more important for sectional title units where you would also need permission from the trustees.

Feature

apart from the cost of the inverter and batteries you need to convert your lights to leds.

this is expensive and for a standard house could cost in the vicinity of approximately r5000.

inverters with their battery backup can range from r8000 to r60 000 depending what you want to run. if you are thinking of going this route speak to us and we can give you some detail on companies that are working on the estate.

and then let’s look at gas. a gas stove is a must in any modern home.

one often hears it said that gas can be dangerous! yes, it can, but only if you do not follow the rules.

it is against the law to connect up your own gas supply. you need to have a gas compliancecertificateforyoutogetyouroccupancy letter. you will also not be able to sell your home one day without this certificate.

the sabs document on the handling, storage andmaintenanceofliquefiedpetroleumgas in domestic, commercial, and industrial installations is a document of 83 pages.

these laws cover where the gas bottles depending on size are allowed to be kept.

for apartments the maximum size is 9kg and for a free standing house it is 19kg.

our estate rules state that any outside gas cylinders have to be housed in a lockable cagewithacut-offvalveoutsidethecage.

management will be inspecting properties to check on gas installations.

if you go away over a weekend or on holiday make sure your gas valve has been closed.

Wehadanelectricfireinahomelastmonthand on inspection found a large gas bottle that was not caged. i dread to think of the consequencesifthisfirehadreachedthegasbottle.

if you have experienced load shedding make doubly sure after the electricity has come back on that there are no loose gas lamps or gas stoves near your stove in the kitchen.

rather be safe than sorry.

these treats are gooey, messy and very yummy! you’ll have to ask mommy or daddy to help you with the stove, or your older brother or sister. make a whole batch, and then have them throughout the holidays; it just takes three ingredients!

RECiPE (makes 16 slices) • 75g butter• 1 ½ packets marshmallows (pink and white) • 6 cups rice krispies

MEtHOD• grease a large baking pan with spray and cook, or some melted

butter. line it with wax paper.• melt the butter in a large saucepan.• add the marshmallows carefully and slowly. stir constantly, until

the marshmallows have melted. Watch the heat; don’t burn the ‘mallows!

• add the rice krispies and stir quickly to combine. • carefully pour the mixture into the baking pan. it should be

niceandfirm.Pressthemixturedownwiththebackofacleanspoon.

• once it is cool, cut into cubes, slices or bars…whatever you like!

tiPS • you can add anything to your slices! some dried fruit,

like cranberries, or some chocolate pieces. you can even sprinkle on some hundreds and thousands or cover the top with a layer of caramel.

• to make a lovely gift, wrap up a slice or cube with some baking paper and tie a ribbon around it. gran and gramps will love it!

• if you want your slices to be for christmas, then dip a few rice krispies in some red and green food colouring and use this to decorate the slice. or, instead of pressing your bubble mixture into a pan, die your rice krispies green and then shape a blob into a christmas tree. Put it on top of a cupcake for an extra special treat!
