CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY: Remember to start the Novena of Chaplets on Good Friday in order to finish up the day before Divine Mercy Sunday. This represents the devotion with one accord to prayer in the upper room before the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Include the different intention for each day that the Lord gave Sr. Faustina: “By this Novena [of chaplets, before the Feast of Mercy], I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796).

Join us on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 28, at 3 pm to sing the Divine Mercy Chaplet with the choir.

Holy Week begins with the reading of the Passion at all masses on Palm Sunday. The reading sets the stage for the events of Holy Week; Holy Thursday commemorating the Institution of the Eucharist; Good Friday commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins; Easter Vigil begins the celebration of Christ’s triumph over sin and death through His resurrection. As a whole, Holy Week is meant to be a sobering reminder of the depth of Christ’s suffering for us. That depth of suffering represents the infinite love of God for us. Jesus willingly gave up His power as God to live with us, to completely identify with our struggles against temptation and evil. Because of the fullness of His humanity, Jesus takes upon Himself all of the sins of our human condition. Because of the fullness of His divinity, Jesus becomes the eternal high priest offering Himself for our salvation. This week is our final opportunity this Lenten season to reflect on our lives and our response to Jesus’ offer-ing for us. Do we really understand how much He suffered for us? Do we really understand how much He loves us? Jesus suffered and died so that each of us could be forgiven our sins and live in the Spirit as His witnesses in the world. Does our daily life reflect our picking up our cross and following Jesus? It is only through our participation in His cross that we can come to the power of the resurrection. May this Holy Week help us to appreciate Jesus’ love for each of us, and may it truly be holy for us! Amen!

GOOD FRIDAY WALK It is almost time for the Annual Good Friday Walk in Longmont! ALL are invited! Everyone and all ages welcome! This is a great opportunity for families to be involved in our Lord's Way of the Cross, as well as being a wonderful Christian witness to the Longmont community. We will once again be walking across town in Longmont, CO. We will walk from St. John the Baptist Church to St. Francis of Assisi Church (~5 miles). We will be stopping at certain points along the way to pray the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross. We end with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy inside St. Francis Parish right after the walk. We hope to arrive about 11:30am. Father Frank will be available for confessions during and after this time.

DATE: Good Friday! April 19, 2019

START TIME: 7:45am we gather. We begin the Walk at 8:00am sharp from St. John’s parking lot.

LOCATION: Correction: meet in the main parking lot on the south side of the church, and not in the small lot near the playground.

* For those that need to walk a shorter distance, we should be arriving at the old JC Penney at 955 S. Hover and Nelson around 9:45am (now called At Home Decor Store next to King Soopers). Please park on the North side of the building and look for us.

We will be gathered as a group on the North side of At Home Decor store on the large sidewalk for about 10 minutes for prayer and restroom break (at King Soopers inside to the right corner). We will continue our walk to St. Francis of Assisi Church (3791 Pike Road at Airport Rd). We will have police escorts for crossing roads safely.

BRING: Wagons, strollers, sunscreen, Rosaries, water, snacks for the little ones, but please, NO bikes, skates, scooters, IPods, music, or social texting. This is a solemn and prayerful walk.

Kids in previous years have made their own light-weight cross to carry; as the larger cross will be carried by adults only.

You may also bring your own snacks and lunch for the kids to eat at the end of the walk.

PRINT AND BRING: Stations of the Cross prayer booklet, 8 pages, and Litany of Humility prayer.

It is also posted on the St. Francis and St. John’s website. PLEASE make sure you have enough copies for your family to follow along. We will also be doing the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary if you need to bring that as well.

Dress for the weather! - We go rain, snow, or sunshine!

There will be cars parked at St. Francis to take drivers back to St. John’s and At Home Decor Store to retrieve their cars. Those remaining will watch the kids at St. Francis until they return.

We’ve had upwards to 270 Christian witnesses on the walk and it’s powerful to commemorate Good Friday as a faith community. Please join us, and please spread the word to family and friends!

God bless your Lenten journey!

KIDS – We’re missing you – don’t be shy, come and learn about your faith, and make good friends! It’s more than just receiving the sacraments, it’s about meeting Jesus.

CONFIRMATION FOR 3RD & 4TH GRADES: Archbishop Aquila has instituted “Restored Order for Sacraments” – that is Confirmation at an earlier age, to complete the Sacraments of Initiation. Our 3rd & 4th graders will now receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this year if they have completed 1 year of Basics RE. Please register your children for RE Classes soon. It is very important for them to begin learning about their faith before their Sacramental year; and to continue their formation well beyond First Eucharist or Confirmation!! Green Registration Forms are available in the Narthex; or you may go to our web-site to register and pay on-line. Please help us by registering early. Continued on p. 6.

Lenten Scripture Study: PSALMS At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God.

Psalms: The School of Prayer is in progress at St. Francis of Assisi. This study began Tuesday Mar. 5 at 12 – 1:45 and Thursday Mar. 7 at 6:15-8:00, and continues for 11 sessions total.

To see if you can still join, please contact Sandy at [email protected]

Lenten Regulations for Observing the Penitential Season

The penitential season of Lent began on Ash Wednes-day (March 6th) and continues until the evening of Holy Thursday (April 18th). Easter is April 21st this year.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. (USCCB website).

By the threefold discipline of fasting, alms-giving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious sin. (Denver Catholic 2014)

GOD SPEAKS TO YOUR HEART – Hello, hello. You’re the one he’s calling, yes He is! RE is not for the faint of heart! It’s for those with a love and passion for their faith and for the future of our Church. We really do need help as: SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS & AIDES – Our Substitutes are so IMPORTANT; and always needed for all sessions, sometimes with short notice. Responsible teens may be an Aide as long as you are involved in one of our Youth Programs.

WE NEED MEN & WOMEN TO TAKE COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND – We are once again in need of people willing to take Holy Communion to those who are homebound. If this is in your heart, please call Helen. Training provided.

Respect Life

On Sunday, April 14th at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus (1318 Mapleton Ave. ,

Boulder) in Jubilee Hall, the 40 Days for Life/Boulder team welcomes Sue Thayer for the final day of the Spring, 40 Days for Life campaign. Sue is Director of Outreach, 40 Days for Life, founder & director of Cornerstone for Life Pregnancy resource center and, for 18 years, manager of a Planned Parenthood clinic. While at Planned Parenthood, Sue believed she was helping women. But that all changed when she was informed she would do webcam abortions at her small rural Iowa center. Stunned, her concerns fell on deaf ears in her clinic. Sue saw the abortion giant in a new light and ultimately shared her insider’s knowledge. You will want to hear her story as she shares her miraculous conversion and change of heart, testifying to the power of redemption with bold faith, honesty, transparency & humor. Sue will share her story as well as answer questions. Then for anyone who wants to join us, we will go over to the Boulder Abortion Clinic for final prayers by candlelight. This must-see presentation is open to all who believe that it is time to end abortion, especially late term, here in Boulder, throughout the U.S. and the world. You do not need to be part of 40 Days for Life to attend, just come! Susan Gills

Where can I eat a vegetarian-style meal during Lent? Eating a simple vegetarian meal at home would be

the most sacrificial option, but for those times we cannot, there are many restaurants where we can find a vegetarian meal. For seafood we carry: Red Lobster,

Chili's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin, or TGI Friday's. In a hurry? We have: McDonald's, Wendy's, Noodles, Panera, Carl's Jr, or Subway. How about vegetarian pizza? We

carry Lefty’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, and Old Chicago. Stop by the gift card counter and get your choice today!
