PREFACEA man can never achieve the greatest

success unless he is placed in an environ-ment or, commercially speaking, in a busi-ness which corresponds with his spirit andtemperament. He cannot know the latterunless he shall have first made a carefulstudy of human nature generally and thenmore specifically as to his own personal char-acteristics.

The musician will seldom violate his artby combining the pure, sweet, delicate tonesof the violin and the coarse, harsh, unhar-monizing sounds which are emitted from thedrum. On the other hand, the violin andthe soft tones of the piano, when combined, are most pleasing to the aesthetic sense.

Just so with the human being. A keen, quick thinker, one of quick action, wouldnever be content nor successful on slowmoving machinery, or retail sales, wherepatience and long drawn out conversationsare necessary. To be successful he shouldput all his energy into sales of larger quan-tities of goods, or by working on quick mov-ing machinery, which would be more in ac-

cord with his lively, vivacious action andmanner. From a thorough study of the individual

temperament, characteristics and peculiari-ties, the vocation for which the subject isbest fitted can be obtained.

    CHARACTER ANALYSISPHRENOLOGY

The first question that arises in the mindof the reader is, what are the proofs to sup-port Phrenology? None are necessary. Weconsider the fundamental principles ofPhrenology as well settled and demonstratedas are the great truths in Chemistry, Geol-ogy, and Astronomy.

In the early centuries brute force oftenheld sway, until low craftiness dethroned it,while high and noble intellectual combina-tions pushed this aside in its turn and stillman knew not himself; but the time camewhen man, having rendered himself practicalby discoveries and appliances in othersciences, became at length anxious for somerational views of the human mind.A great many philosophers disclosed scien-

tific truths which were not recognized, butin the year 1 75 7 a native of Suabia, by thename of Francois Joseph Gall, was recog-nized as the father of Phrenology. At theage of nine years he and another boy wereplaced under the tuition of an uncle, andwhile with him, Gall was often reprimandedfor his inability to compete with his com-panion in his studies. Later they were sentto school at Bade, where about thirty other

CHARACTER ANALYSISboys attended. Here he had the same dif-ficulty, though there were two who evenexcelled Gall's companion in memorizing.Through careful observation, Gall noticedthat all their eyes were very prominent; soprominent that they gave them the nick-name of Bull's Eyes. Gall was transferredto another school and met with the same dis-appointment in competing with other boysin verbal recitation. He observed the pro-jecting eyes in those who excelled him there, also. At a later period he again suffereddefeat at the college of Strasburgh, byyouths whose eyes exhibited the same kindof prominence. Having observed thispeculiarity in all his companions who hadverbal memory, the idea very naturally aroseto Gall that prominent eyes were an indica-tion of good verbal memoryand here wasthe beginning of Phrenology. He came to the conclusion that if prom-

inent eyes meant verbal memory, otherprominent parts of the head had some mean-ing; and from this time on Gall devoted histime to the study of the human character.Nothing escaped his notice. Dr. Gall, ashe was now called, gave parties and invitedall types of people and had them tell of thecharacteristics of their fellow-men. As a

CHARACTER ANALYSISresult he observed that people with a car-nivorous instinct and disposition to murder, had a more prominent swelling at the baseof the brain. Broadness of the head atthis place, was very noticeable in one of hiscompanions, who was noted for his cun-ningness, deceit and tendency to steal. One man whom Dr. Gall was interested

in was a leader and very prominent in so-ciety, and was considered a very truthfulman; but Dr. Gall noticed the developmentand broadness of the base of the head andwas a little suspicious. After this man'sdeath, Dr. Gall learned that he was deceit-ful and had stolen large sums of money.

Next we learn of Dr. Spurzheim, who wasborn in 1 776 at Longwich, a village nearTreves, in Germany. He was like Gall, aman of genius. He went to Vienna in 1 799to study medicine and there became ac-quainted with Dr. Gall and from that timewas associated with him. Dr. Spurzheimthen took up the study of Phrenology. Hegave lectures on the subject, which were metwith criticism; but he did not give up. Hepublished "Outlines of Phrenology," and onthe 25th of January, 1828, in the city ofEdinburgh, a few believers who had organ-ized a Phrenology Society, gave a dinner to

CHARACTER ANALYSISDr. Spurzheim, to which a Sir William Ham-ilton, who took an active part against Phre-nology, was invited. He preferred a war ofwords instead of making a thorough exam-ination of its truths. Dr. Spurzheim, afteran explanation as to its truths, asked permis-sion to prove his words by an examinationof Hamilton's head. The baronet declinedit as undignified, and Dr. Spurzheim wonthe debate.

Since that time we have had hundreds ofphilosophers, each giving new thoughts onthe subject. But the last century peoplehave been too busy with their social andfinancial affairs and the study of animals, plants and bugs to give a thought to themost important subject, in my estimation, the "Human Body.**

People believe to a certain extent, but donot admit it. For instance, as soon as aman meets another he forms some opinionof himnot from the shape of the bodynor the feetbut from observing the shapeof the head and facial expressions; which isnothing but Phrenology. So it is a knownfact that by a careful and thorough study ofthe human head and face, we can tell of thecharacteristics and temperament of the per-son.

10 CHARACTER ANALYSISOur judgment of people should be based

upon a thorough, scientific study of theircharacter. We should not form conclusionsfrom guesswork. People often form con-clusions which are entirely erroneous becausethey are ignorant on the subject. A man isoften judged by his clothes and environ-ment; which is unjust. Some of the greatestmen in history were brought up in rags andthe very poorest of environment. So, aftera thorough, scientific study, a man should beable to detect the characteristics of peopleregardless of their environment and clothes.

Teachers, employment agents, managers, fathers and mothers, in my estimation, areresponsible for the welfare of their pupils, employees, and children.

I do not think a teacher is successful un-less he studies his pupils and learns of theirdifferent characteristics, and handles themaccordingly. From my own experience in teaching

school, I found one pupil about ten yearsold, who was said to be a menace to theneighborhood, and they attached the nameof "Nick Carter** to him because he was sobad. In talking to his mother she informedme that if I ever conquered her son I could

CHARACTER ANALYSIS 1 1do better than she, as she had scolded himand whipped him, but could not masterhim. The father was away from home mostof the time, so the mother was raising herchildren to the best of her ability. "Nick"even had his playmates trained to obey hisorders or suffer the consequences. Hisformer teacher knew better than to punishhim, because he would fight back; was usu-ally prepared at all times by wearing spursor carrying a knife; anything to give peoplethe impression he was a bad, bold man, suchas he had read about in story books. My first day of teaching, the last pupil

to come in was a bright-eyed little chap witha large rimmed hat on his head, a red ban-danna around his neck, belt around hiswaist, with a small toy pistol, and spurs onhis shoes. He walked across the room andto my surpise selected the front seat, leavinghis hat upon his head. Of course everypupil knew this was "Nick Carter," and wasintensely interested to know what was goingto happen next. At a glance, I noticedNick had a determined look upon his faceand would be very stubborn if opposed. Ashort time before this I read an article in"School Management," which said: "Astubborn person is self-conscious and can-

I thought, "Here is my chance totest it out/' I did not look at him or ad-dress him personally, but addressed thepupils in a general way and said: "I won-der if we have enough hat hooks in the hallfor all the little boys and girls." NaturallyNick's curiosity was aroused, and he won-dered if the pupils had left a hook for him.He went as fast as his little legs could takehim to the hall and soon appeared again inthe doorway, but no hat on his head thistime, and exclaimed: "There is just onemore hook left, teacher," and I respondedkindly, "Thank you." He slipped into hisseat very quietly this time, with a look in hiseyes as though to say, "You are the onlyone who has ever spoken kindly to me."From that time on I never had a betterpupil than Nick Carter. From observation

I learned this little fellow was a keen, quickthinker, but was so active he would becomerestless if he had to study very long at atime. As soon as I noticed this restlessnesscoming upon him, I had him go on an errandfor me, erase the boards, something to gethim away from his books for a while. Istudied all my pupils and tried to remedytheir failings to the best of my ability.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS 13One of my pupils had an extremely high

forehead for a child, and the top of his headwell developed, but the lower part camealmost to a point. In analyzing him I foundhe was very fond of books and did not wantto leave them for recess. His mother in-formed me that he was always reading athome. I began to see his health failing, andsuggested to his mother that it was best forthe child not to read of evenings for a while, and when recess came I went outside andstarted my pupils playing games and tookparticular pains to see that this little fellowtook an active part. I saw him brighten upagain, just as a plant does after a shower.

I had another pupil just the opposite;very low forehead and the lower part ofthe head very well developed. I saw hewas very active but did not learn very easilyand that it was hard to induce him to study. As most pupils are curious, I tried to arousehis curiosity by the study of charts and pic-tures first, and then by letting him do actualmeasuring. I discovered that this child wasgood in mathematics but backward in allother studies, also that he liked to buildhouses. I had to 3pend more time with thischild than the others as it is much easier toteach a child to play games than to interest

14 CHARACTER ANALYSIShim in his studies. From the study of thispupil, I learned that you must let a childwho is active, know what he is studyingabout, with the use of charts, and why heshould ; also that he must think well, andread about anything until he understands itthoroughly before he puts it into action. This is the type which usually leave schoolin the 6th or 8th grade, but shculd be urgedto stick to his studies. Suppose this childwere to become disabled through an acci-dent. Without an education he would betotally dependent.

Of course these are extreme cases. Themajority of pupils have both their mentaland active ability equally developed, con-sequently they do not work too rapidly andtherefore do not tire too easily.

Caution should be taken not to arousejealousy in other pupils. As most of theactive pupils become restless about the sametime, I decided upon a plan which wouldapply to all of the pupils generally. WhenI saw this restlessness coming upon them, Itold them to lie their heads on their desksand close their eyes, as this would rest bothtypes, the mental and the active. It is sur-prising what two or three moments* rest ofthis kind will do for them. This applies to

CHARACTER ANALYSIS 15the Intermediate pupils just out of Kinder-garten. The Intermediate pupils, or pupilsfrom seven to ten years old, are consideredthe hardest to handle, but in my estimationthe most interesting, for this is the real be-ginning of the child's career and great careshould be taken that the child is startedright.

Employment agents should try and placeboys and girls in positions corresponding totheir temperament, and help them to successinstead of their downfall. Often men havebeen misplaced in factories and offices onaccount of an inefficient manager. I knowof many cases where this has been done;one in particular, where a very efficientwealthy business man placed his brother, who was very active and was always work-ing around machines, in the same office, asmanager of the office force. In the firstplace he could not handle people, as hethought everybody had to be commandedto do anything, and as a result he was al-ways looking for new help. He hired in-efficient bookkeepers, and a cashier who didnot believe that "Honesty was the bestpolicy,'* and the company was graduallygoing under when they both woke up to thefact that the brother was a mechanic and

Everybody is fitted for some kind of workbut through the inefficiency of managers, natural born electricians and mechanics areplaced in offices, and men placed in factorieswho, with a little help, would make the mostefficient managers and office men.

Often fathers and mothers do not studytheir children and are not capable of hand-ling them. I think parents are to blame formany a wayward child. Some are too easyand others too strict with their children, anda great many parents are so busy with theirbusiness and social affairs that they cannotgive their children any of their time. Sothe child grows up without a guiding handand has to analyze his own character anddecide upon his own vocation, after the bestpart of his life has been wasted. No one is perfect, but a person should

study his own characteristics and endeavorto remedy his shortcomings to the best ofhis ability.

In the following pages I have given someof the characteristics of different types ofpeople, and I sincerely hope that these por-trayals of human character will be a benefit

    CHARACTER ANALYSIS 5\NOSE

The nose is the greatest of the facial fea-tures. It plays a very prominent part in thespeech and vocalization. In analyzing thefaces of different people a person will noticethat the nose advances in the ratio of in-telligence, and a well developed nose de-notes intellect, force, and power. It alsoindicates the health of a person. As we usethe nose for breathing, a well developednose and nostrils are indicative of goodlungs. As the nose is used for scenting, awell developed nose and nostrils also indi-cate that the stomach is in good condition asit protects against spoiled foods and nox-ious gases. The better the breathing capac-ity the better able will be the individual tomanifest his mental ability. The action ofthe brain is strengthened by the impulsegiven to the volume of blood sent to thatorgan by the deep breathing.

Energetic movements are controlled bythe amount of air inhaled.

There are a great many types of nose, but the most common are the straight, rounded, broad, long, and pug.The straight nose, when well developed

indicates refinement, good taste, and artcapacities. If the nose is straight, short and

be too aggressive though he is naturallylogical and talented in debating qualities.Possessors of this type of nose are invari-ably causing friction, thoughtlessly. Suchpersons are usually considered the most suc-cessful as they marry their own type and donot mix with other people who have differ-ent characteristics. The broad flat nose is not a very good

indication; in the first place the possessor isnot very strong physically, as the nostrilsare not large enough to afford deep breath-ing, therefore, they do not supply the neces-sary oxygen for the system. This kind ofnose is more like the animal type and thepossessor is apt to have bestial characteris-tics rather than high ideals. The long nose is found on a man who isusually prying into other people's affairs, al-

ways giving his ideas and plans unsolicited. The pug nose, in my estimation, is the

most undeveloped and the possessor is very

The hand is very important. The oldmethod of reading the hand was calledPalmistry. Later it was given the name ofCheirosophy.

Cheirosophy is divided into two branches;Cheirognomy and Cheiromancy.

Cheirognomy is the science which tells ofa person's nature and talents from the gen-eral outline of the hands.

Cheiromancy is the science which gives usan indication as to the accidents and inci-dents of a person's life; it also aids in findingmethods for the up-building of character. The brain has the same effect upon the

hand as it does upon the face, only it gov-erns different characteristics in the hand. Some of the finer characteristics can only

be obtained from the hand. From a careful scientific study of the

HOW TO STUDY THE HANDIn right-handed persons the left side of

    the brain is the larger and more positiveside; the right hand is therefore chosen toact as the positive hand, the guiding, execu-tive hand, and its lines and all signs indicatethe directive, impulsive, and forceful ele-ments of the person's nature.The left hand is, then, the negative hand;

it is receptive and calm and represents theheriditary endowments of parents and fam-ily history.

In case the person is left-handed, then theleft hand is the positive and the right handis the negative. The positive hand is the hand of futurity

Murderer's HandThe Murderer's hand has a thick heavy

palm, unusually broad, short, awkward, andstiff fingers. The whole hand has a reddishtint. The thumb is clumsy. According tohistory, we find this hand on Tropmann, who was one of the world's worst murderers, who killed a family of seven. Also Avinain, the Parisian butcher, who killed and cut topieces several people.

In talking to a person who possesses thistype of hand, whenever inclined to confess,he will tell you at times, when his temperis aroused, his temperature rises; his faceand head become flushed, and he has such athirst for blood that it almost overcomes hispower and strength. This is why it is dan-gerous for a man with a high temper todrink intoxicants as it always causes theblood to rush to the head.

This hand is associated with an unde-veloped head, in education, culture andmorality. The bestial traits are the mostdeveloped in this type, therefore he doesnot respect the law.

This type should be given the best of carepossible, when he is a child, so as to avoidcrime and sorrow later in life.
