INDEX of the Magazine's Content
in brief Scientific Research committee is only one year old, one year of hard work and great success in order
to prove that the future hope is represented in the Scientific Research field. At first a lot of problems
faced us but our faith in God and our insistence to succeed were our friends in this long
journey. This committee began with the head and the coordinator only who were working
day after day and month after month until it enlarged and reached the highest level in
performance that made us the leading association in the scientific Research field. , our
history began on Wednesday 14.9.2011 when "Salma Ahmed Rabie"
was elected to be the first Scientific Research chairperson.
And then,
hard work began, on Monday 24.10.2011 our first scientific Research competition was held
under the title of "pneumonia" and with the supervision of:
Dr/ Wael Tawkkol "Head of Microbiology Department at MUST University".
We were the first organization prepared to establish a Scientific Research competition which its
main aim was to raise the competition spirit between the students and enlarge their knowledge and
information in a way that is not traditional. And quickly on Tuesday 25.10,2011 our PAM medical
online magazine was released this magazine which was held for the purpose to share knowledge and
scatter information every where. More and more of great events where done. Salma Ahmed Rabie
has proven that Scientific Research committee deserves all respect for being our door to the
developed world
&me, Ghaidaa Abdullah coordinator of Scientific
research 2011.2012 and head of it 2012.2013
promised that I will keep on the hard work and
Great Spirit of the Scientific Research committee.
Salma Ahmed Rabie thank you for being the

Frederick Grant Banting's Biography
Frederick Grant Banting was born on November 14, 1891, at
Alliston, Ont., Canada. He was the youngest of five children of
William Thompson Banting and Margaret Grant. Educated at the
Public and High Schools at Alliston, he later went to the University
of Toronto to study divinity, but soon transferred to the study of
medicine. In 1916 he took his M.B. degree and at once joined the
Canadian Army Medical Corps, and served, during the First World
War, in France. In 1918 he was wounded at the battle of Cambrai
and in 1919 he was awarded the Military Cross for heroism under
fire.
When the war ended in 1919, Banting returned to Canada and was
for a short time a medical practitioner at London, Ontario. He
studied orthopaedic medicine and was, during the year 1919-1920,
Resident Surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. From
1920 until 1921 he did part-time teaching in orthopaedics at the
University of Western Ontario at London, Canada, besides his general practice, and from 1921
until 1922 he was Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Toronto. In 1922 he was awarded
his M.D. degree, together with a gold medal.
Banting developed an interest in painting beginning around 1921 while he was in London, Ontario.
He became friends with Group of Seven artists A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris, sharing their love
of the rugged Canadian landscape,
Banting married twice .
In 1922 Banting had been appointed Senior Demonstrator in Medicine at the University of Toronto,
and in 1923 he was elected to the Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research, which had been
endowed by the Legislature of the Province of Ontario. He was also appointed Honorary
Consulting Physician to the Toronto General Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children, and the
Toronto Western Hospital. In the Banting and Best Institute, Banting dealt with the problems of
silicosis, cancer, the mechanism of drowning and how to counteract it.
In addition to his medical degree, Banting also obtained, in 1923, the LL.D. degree (Queens) and
the D.Sc. degree (Toronto). Prior to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1923, which he shared with Macleod, he received the Reeve Prize of the University of Toronto
(1922). In 1923, the Canadian Parliament granted him a Life Annuity of $7,500. In 1928 Banting
gave the Cameron Lecture in Edinburgh. He was appointed member of numerous medical
academies and societies in his country and abroad, including the British and American
Physiological Societies, and the American Pharmacological Society. He was knighted in 1934.
The story of the discovery of insulin has been well
chronicled beginning with a young physician, Frederick
Banting, in London, Ontario, imagining that it might be
possible to isolate the internal secretions of the pancreas by
ligating the pancreatic ducts to induce atrophy of the acinar
cells and thereby minimize contamination of the tissue
extract with digestive enzymes. Banting presented his
suggestion to J. J. R. Macleod, a distinguished physiologist
at the University of Toronto who provided Banting with a
laboratory for the summer and some dogs for the
experiments. Macleod also assigned Charles Best, a young
student, to work as Banting's assistant for the summer.
During the summer of 1921, Banting and Best made
remarkable progress, and by fall they had isolated material
from pancreas extracts that dramatically prolonged the lives of dogs made diabetic by removal of
the pancreas. In the winter of 1922, Banting and Best treated their first human patient, a young boy, who's life was saved by the treatment. This was a stunning accomplishment. Consider that
from the start of the research in the summer of 1921 to treating a human patient successfully in
the winter of 1922, the pace, especially by current standards for clinical treatments, was
remarkable.
With that achievement, Macleod, who had been initially unenthusiastic about the work, assigned
his entire laboratory to the insulin project. He also enlisted the Eli Lilly Company to aid in the large
scale, commercial preparation of insulin although the University of Toronto received the patent for
insulin production. By 1923, insulin was available in quantities adequate for relatively widespread
treatment of diabetes. Although the success of the insulin project was remarkable, the rewards for
the research workers were, it seems, quite controversial. The 1923 Noble Prize in Physiology or
Medicine was awarded to Banting and Macleod. Apparently, Banting was annoyed at the omission
of Best and gave him half of his share of the prize. There was also, perhaps, the feeling that
Macleod had done little in the initial stages of the work and was an undeserving recipient. Macleod
split his share of the Prize with J. B. Collip who had made contributions to the later stages of the
work on insulin purification.
After the spectacular events of 1921–1923, the University of Toronto established the Banting and
Best Department of Medical Research separate from the University. Banting accomplished little
during the rest of his career and died in a plane crash in 1940. Best, however, had a long
successful tenure at the University of Toronto working on insulin and subsequently other
important topics including the importance of dietary choline and the development of heparin as an
anticoagulant.
The paper selected as this Journal of Biological Chemistry Classic is not itself “classic” in the usual
sense. It reviews very well, however, a remarkable body of classic work. The information
regarding various procedures that had been developed quickly and compared in attempts to
improve the yield and purity of insulin also contains clues to some special properties of the
protein, although so little was known at that time about the structure of insulin (or any protein)
that there seemed little rationale for its purification. Insulin was crystallized in 1926 by John J.
Abel (1). Virtually all of the information in this Introduction is from Ref.
He made an airplane accident and died on 21-Feb-1941 in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Applied scientific research
In the past decades, new roles for the pharmacist have emerged in the developed countries because
it is the pharmacist who can play a vital role in assisting physicians to prescribe rationally, who can help
to assure that the right drug is ordered for the right patient at the right time, in the right amounts but
unfortunately in Egypt many people under-estimate the pharmacist and consider him as just a seller this
misconception has led many pharmacists and pharmacy students to lose confidence.
So we felt that it is our duty to let every body know that It is the pharmacist who has been most highly
trained as an expert in drug products, who has the best opportunity to keep up-date on developments in
this field and who can serve both physician and patient as a knowledgeable advisor.
We believe that the first step in solving any problem is to determine the size of the problem before trying
to figure out the right solutions, so in an effort from us to assess problems facing the pharmacist in
Egypt we have made 3 surveys: -
The first survey was made with patients
to be able to assess their opinions of the
health care services provided to them by
pharmacists.
The second Survey one was made with pharmacy
students because they are the future pharmacists and
we wanted to know whether or not they are equipped
with the knowledge and confidence to face the society
after graduation.
The third survey was conducted on
community pharmacists to be able to
determine the current role of the pharmacist
in the health care and to be able to know
whether or not the pharmacist is playing his
role in preventing drug misuse, drug abuse
and irrational prescribing.
And finally I would like to thank my team
(Applied SR Team) really you are such a great
team and without your efforts and determination
these surveys wouldn't have come to light. I'm so
proud to have such a great opportunity to work
with ambitious and enthusiastic personalities like
you.

On Monday December 10,2012 our first competition in Scientific research committee was held
under the mentioned title .we have chosen this topic because; we are the generation of impossible, we are on the cutting edge of this new aspect in medicine . Our world is changing
around us so we have to change with it or we are going to be buried under our old knowledge. We have chosen this topic as its applications is increasing around us especially in
the field of curing cancer patients.
We started the competition with seven competitors one of them is a postgraduate, anther is
medical student and the wrest 5 are pharmacy students.
Every competitor had ten minutes to present his research then Dr/ Wael Tawakkol discuss
the presentation with him. The winner were chosen according to a point system which evaluate there language skills, Communication skills, knowledge and presentation skills.
