Panasonic G-series geared motors

ConstructionThe Panasonic G-series motors are designed for 1 or 3

phase supply. The 6-40W models are all self cooled and

the 60 and 90W units are supplied with a cooling fan.

Gearboxes use a combination of helical and spur gears

for high speed efficient running and are grease lubricat-

ed. Standard ratios of 3:1 to 200:1. However, where

higher ratios and lower speeds are required, an interme-

diate 10:1 decimal gearbox is available.

Service factorsTo maintain the life of the geared motor, a service factor must be selected which is dependent upon type of load andduty. From the below table, examples are given of typical applications. For example, under constant load a servicefactor of 1.0 should be used.

Actual speedsThe actual output speeds under rated torque is typically 10-20%less than the nominal speed. Motor speed – torque curves givethe motor full load rated speed and indication of how speedvaries with load. Nominal speeds are based on a motor nominalspeed of 1500 r/min.

Brake motorsPanasonic G-series brake motors feature a built-in spring appliedelectromagnetic brake. This reduces stopping times and gives astatic holding torque.

Motor overrun is normally 2-4 revolutions and the brake is ratedfor 6 operations per minute.See pages 30-39.

Quick reversible motorsWhen you turn off the power to the Reversible motor, brakingtorque will be generated due to a built-in constant friction braking system.

The revolutions the motor makes until it completely stops aredescribed as overrun. A holding load torque reduces and a driv-ing load torque increases the overrun. The overrun values in thetable are for induction purposes only and do not include gearboxratio or load inertia.See pages 6-19.

For constant speed applications, Panasonic offer a range of standard induction and and brake motors for both single and threephase voltage supplies plus quick reversible motors for single phase supplies.

1 phase quick reversible motors (pages 6-19)

A friction plate attached to the end of the rotor is constantly underfriction via four cylindrical brake pads and springs. The resultingbraking torque is continuously applied to the motor even duringmotor running. When power is removed, this friction results infaster stopping of the motor.

Three phase induction motors deliver improved torque perform-ance over single phase models.

The 230V versions suit variable speed running with thePanasonic Micro-Inverter. The 400V versions are designed to beconnected directly to 3 phase supplies.

1 & 3 phase brake motors (pages 30-39)

The brake releases automatically when the motor is powered,leaving no residual torque. When the motor is switched off thebrake re-engages. Motor overun is typically 2-4 revolutions andthe brake is rated for six operations per minute.

Panasonic G-series fixed speed solutions

All the induction motors in the G-Series range are highly efficientand quiet in operation. The same high quality design and basicconstruction is used throughout the range. All motors are 4 polewith a nominal speed of 1500 r/min at 50 Hz.

If variable speed is required the 230V 3 phase geared motors can be used with the Panasonic Micro-inverter. This combinationoffers excellent speed/torque characteristics and good dynamic motor performance. If greater functionality is required, theLenze smd inverter offers further options including its unique EPM memory chip.

Micro-Inverter (pages 40-43)The Panasonic Micro-Inverter can be used with any 3phase motor, rated for 230V operation.

There are two versions available: one suitable for the 25and 40W motors and another for the 60 and 90W motors.

Features include built-in or external speed potentiometer,dynamic braking and acceleration/deceleration ramp.

Panasonic G-series variable speed solutions

smd inverterDesigned for general purpose applications, Lenze smdinverters offer compact design, simple installation andfast set-up.

The smd model ESMD251X2SAF has a rated outputpower of 0.25kW and suits any G-series geared motorsrated for 230V 3 phase input. This inverter input is 180-264V, 48-62Hz, Dimensions are 93 wide x 146 high x 83deep.

Features include up to 3 pre-set jog speeds, voltage boost,dc injection braking, adjustable chopper frequencybetween 4 and 10Hz, digital and analog inputs and relayoutput.

Panasonic G-series Gearbox data

Fitting and operating instructionsPanasonic AC geared motors comprise a totallyenclosed standard motor with grease lubricated bear-ings and a grease-filled gearbox, neither of which willrequire any maintenance during the running of theunit under normal operating conditions. On installa-tion, the mounting of the motor must allow a free flowof cooling air over the surface of the motor. This condi-tion must be maintained under all circumstances. Themethod of mounting should also limit the radial forceapplied to the geared output shaft.

Fitting instructionsFor models 40W and below, it is recommended that theoutput shaft bearing housing should be used as alocating spigot for mounting the unit. Firstly, removethe four fixing nuts, taking care that the motor andgearbox do not separate. The four fixing bolts shouldbe used to secure the unit to the machine.Alternatively, foot mounts can be supplied to easemounting.

For models 60W and above, it is recommended that theshaft spigot is used for location, with the four mount-ing clearance holes on the gearbox used for securingthe unit to the machine. When tightening the fixingbolts follow the sequence shown in the diagram.In the event of the unit being separated, this will inval-idate the warranty.

It is recommended that a new O-ring is then fitted toensure proper sealing.

Gearbox efficiency

IMPORTANTWhen face mounting the geared motor to an assembly,DO NOT remove or twist the gearhead from or on themotor. This will cause the O-ring to deform resulting ingrease leakage when reassembled. If the mounting ori-entation is modified or the identification label removedfrom the geared motor, warranty of the goods may beinvalidated.

Tightening of fixing bolts

Radial and axial loadsRadial load shows how much bending load may beapplied to the output shaft of the gearbox at 1/2length position. This applies to the application whenthe motor and machine areconnected with a chain or beltbut does not apply when a softflexible coupling is used. Sinceexcessive radial and axial loadsaffect the life of the gearedmotor, please do not exceed themaximum stated loads.
