Predators of pandas are very rare. The pandas main enemy is us, man. People hunt them for their beautiful fur. Human destruction of their natural habitat is their biggest threat and has put pandas on the edge of extinction.

Another enemy is the snow leopard. It is an enemy of the panda’s cubs who wander out of their mother’s protective shield.

Pandas try to avoid people and where they are living, but if they travel near by, roaming dogs attack the pandas vigorously and can fatally injure or kill them.

Why are they endangered? Why are they endangered?

The Panda’s habitat (bamboo forests) are being cut down or dying off, which leads to starving Pandas. Another reason why they are endangered is because of China’s increasing population that is using up their resources very rapidly. Pandas are poached for their skin and soft, thick fur, they are usually poached by foreigners. Pandas prefer to be solitude most of the time and have a very short breeding season. Only one or two cubs are born at a time. The mother looks after only one of them until it is one or two years old. A female panda doesn’t mate while caring for a cub. The infant mortality rate is high among them. There are less

than 1,000 in the wild!!

How to help the Pandas…

“Due to the increase in the awareness of the pandas endangerment, several efforts are being made.” says WWF. “The Chinese authorities have finally declared that the hunting and poaching of pandas is illegal. They have also put up wildlife reserves in China.” WWF announces, “These reserves insure security and protection of panda bears. Us, WWF, along with the Chinese government are making international wildlife conservation efforts for the endangered panda bears along with efforts to maintain their habitats. What your funds to WWF do: increase the pandas area of habitat under legal protection; create green corridors to link isolated pandas; patrolling against poach illegal logging and encroachment; building local capacities for nature reserve management; and continuing research and management.

First of all pandas extinction will be a natural process which happens over hundreds and thousands and millions of years. But, don’t you want the next generation to see all of the glorious wonders like our black and white friend, the panda? Reasons to celebrate: the four year survey that was completed in 2004 counted one thousand and six hundred pandas in the wild, a very encouraging number. 20 hectares of bamboo were planted when a new corridor area was created after national highway 108 was rerouted by tunnel. The road ran through the Quinling Mountains. Before the tunnel it separated the two largest regional populations of pandas.
