What is a panel discussion?

•A panel consists of a small group persons, who carry on a guided and informal discussion before an audience as if the panel were meeting alone

• Panel discussion technique was originated by Harry A. Overstreet in 1929.

Why use this format?

•Panel discussions, if well conducted, are usually more interesting to the audience

than is the single-speaker forum. •They provide a varied clash of opinion and presentation of facts to give even the quiet members of the audience a feeling participation.

Purpose

• To reproduce the features of a small discussion group for the benefit of a larger group

• To provide information and new facts. • To identify the values. • To analyze the current problem from different angle. • To organize for mental recreation. • To influence the audience to an open minded attitude and

respect for other's opinion. • When handled intelligently and creatively, panel discussion

stimulates thoughts and discussion and clarifies thinking.

Format

• Group members will form a half-circle with

chairs in front of class.

Tasks

• Person #1 = reads and clarifies topic

• Person #2 = shares a pictorial representation of the topic

• Person #3 = Connects story plot and why it is important

of how to participate in discussion

• Add information, clarify, bring additional

information from text or prior knowledge

When?

•Beginning the day after tomorrow, groups will

present their discussion each day.•Two Groups will present their panel each day.

Scoring guide - 100 pts

• Presented on due date• Clarifier role fulfilled• Illustration well-prepared and presented• Connections to plot and events presented clearly and

other works included• All members prepared and participated• Met time requirement (5-10 min.)
