I am thrilled to share this year’s formal recruitment with you, and hope that you receive as many beautiful and cherished memories from this weekend and the days to

come as I have.

As a senior, I have been taking more time to reflect on my experience as a student at Mason and as a Greek woman on our campus. Both my sorority sisters and Panhellenic sisters have lifted me to

be a better version of who I was when I first joined. When I look at our community I am overcome with pride, appreciation, and awe.

We are an organization made of ambitious, dynamic women who are constantly changing others lives for the better. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you find your home, and hope for the day you can look back at all the life long memories you make.

My name is Emily Pellen and I am the President of the Panhellenic Council at George Mason University.

The Panhellenic Council at George Mason University is the coordinating body of the seven Panhellenic organizations here on campus.

The council is composed of eight executive board members and two delegates from each sorority. The Panhellenic executive council members

are current sorority members who have disaffiliated from their chapters during the

recruitment process. With disaffiliated members, the executive council is able to provide unbiased planning and support for everyone involved, especially the future sorority women. Panhellenic strengthens the community and is responsible for promoting scholarship, philanthropy, and safety for each sorority as well as the Greek community as a whole.

The GMU Panhellenic council provides activities and programs throughout the year to address current issues affecting college women.

George Mason’s chapter, Gamma Alpha, has two major philanthropic events; Smoke Out Arthritis is a barbeque held every fall and Strike Out is when we partner with the Nationals for a baseball game in the spring!

Alpha Phi has its own philanthropic organization, the Alpha Phi Foundation. Founded in 1956, the Alpha Phi Foundation is one of the oldest Greek philanthropic organizations. The foundation divides donations into several categories: Women’s Heart Health, educational and leadership programs, and scholarships.

Alpha Phi chose to focus on women’s heart health because cardiac disease is the number one killer of women in America. Every woman has a connection to someone who has been affected by heart

disease; a mother, a sister, a friend. The Alpha Phi Foundation strives to fund research programs specific to women’s heart health, because women’s heart disease is much different than men’s.

Each year the Iota Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta raises over $10,000 for Autism Speaks. As a whole Alpha Xi Delta, has raised a million dollars this past year. Iota Alpha strives to promote Autism Awareness on the George Mason campus.

They have taken over Southside for the past two years on National Autism Awareness Day to “Light It Up Blue” and bring awareness to the cause. Each year they host a carnival at the National Walk for Autism Speaks and interact with families and children affected by Autism. The main focus of the Iota Alpha chapter is to bring focus to a cause that they are passionate about.

Gamma Phi Beta’s Philanthropy is building strong girls. They strive to do this through two philanthropic partners: Campfire and Girls on the Run. They are so excited about this focus that emphasizes their long time mission; to provide experiences and resources that build spiritual, mental, and social resiliency in girls in today’s world.

Countless studies demonstrate that girls need positive female role models in their life to promote positive change and provide support, advice, friendship, and reinforcement. Gamma Phi Beta sisters are those valuable female role models to help girls believe anything is possible!
