Year 11 School Based Traineeship This year our Year 11 students, Larissa Unsworth and Hemi Wynyard-Thompson, have been lucky enough

to begin Work Place Learning through the generous support of Sodexo, MEGT and SIDE, initiated by Mr Jamieson along with the support of Mrs Gill and Mrs Dall. Each Friday, Larissa and Hemi put their traineeship

uniforms on and undertake work placement at one of Sodexo's sites in Pannawonica.

During this work placement Larissa works at the Mess, Deli and Supermarket undertaking food preparation and service along with housekeeping and will shortly commence studying a Certificate II in Hospitality, all while getting paid - BONUS!. Hemi has had the opportunity to work with the Sodexo tradesmen in town. He has completed days as a trades assistant with the electrician, carpenter, plumber, diesel mechanic/fitter and a refrigeration mechanic. Hemi will begin studying a Certificate II in Building and Construction. With the support of SIDE supervisor Shane Murray, Larissa and Hemi will complete their Certificates in the relevant areas by the end of next year. We would like to thank Sodexo for allowing our students to undertake this employment and we look forward to working with

them later in the year to offer the same to our current year 10 students.

The Value of a Volunteer—Helping Heroes We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to this amazing lady, Mrs Nicole Snow.

Nicole for one hour, three mornings a week for the last two years has dedicated

her time to assist some of our kids with our Toe by Toe program. This program

helps our kids apply literacy rules to sounds and pronouncing letters correctly in

words. Nicole proudly enjoys the progression, the simple little achievements

that the kids make and enjoys listening to their funny stories creating strong

foundations and bonding with her kids. Nicole, you are amazing and we

appreciate everything you do!

Words from Hemi

Although the hours are

more difficult, I enjoy

the level of

independence and trust

given to me in the

workplace. I am

appreciative to have

gained work experience

during school.

Words from Larissa

I’ve had the opportunity to do a school based

traineeship in Hospitality for Sodexo. I started at the

MESS in the kitchen doing a variety of jobs, dishes,

food prep, cleaning crib rooms, taking food temps,

safe food handling and the importance of hygiene

and nutrition. I get to work in a team, meet new

people and best of all, I get paid! Once I have

experience I would like to move to different areas in

the company like the café and the tavern, so I can

add more skills to attend TAFE later on, study, and

Tennis with Ed

This term we were extremely blessed to have the skills of

tennis pro all the way from Hobart, Ed Bourchier. Ed was

asked by the Remote Tennis Services Australia who are

based in Geraldton, to spend some time in Karratha visiting

different Pilbara towns, teaching and passing on his tennis

skills to our kids. For the first 2 weeks, Ed started with the

basic skills of the forehand and the backhand hit. Once the

kids mastered the technique they then moved on to rallying

against each other and point play which is playing others at a

more competitive aspect. Ed was so impressed with our kids

outstanding behaviour towards listening and learning, along

with how quickly they improved! A huge THANKS to Ed!

Assembly Week 7 Merit Certificate Recipients

Congratulations to our following students for receiving merit

certificates at todays assembly.

Alfie Unsworth, Flynn Koning, Otia Wynyard-Thompson,

Outstanding efforts and keep up the amazing work!

Assembly Item Pre-Primary—Taba Naba

Pre-Primary put on their hula skirts and dazzled us with their gorgeous assembly item Taba Naba. Taba Naba is a song with the title from a Meriam Mir phrase which loosely translates to "let's go

down to the reef and have a good time.” This dance is from the Eastern Islands in the Torres Strait and is sung in Meriam Mir

language. The Torres Strait Culture is traditionally an 'oral culture' which is passed down the generations through songs and dance.

This beautiful song is a hands on, fun activity that engages children with Torres Strait Island culture through the use of language, song and dance which our Pre-Primary students are learning about this

term. What an amazing experience you gave us this morning

Pre-Primary!

Cross Country

On the 28th of June, Miss Tess put together an amazing

Cross Country run for our kids that promoted mental and

physical fitness and prepared our kids in advance for the

up and coming faction carnival. A course was set out and

about amongst the pindan out back amongst the golf

course. Congratulations to—

and a humongous whale. We hope we didn't scare you with our

humongous BURRP!!!

YEAR 7/8 TRIP TO TOM PRICE - Opti-MINDS

The Opti-MINDS, Creative Sustainability Challenge was the perfect opportunity for our Year 7 + 8’s to showcase their creativity and problem solving skills. So, thanks to RIO TINTO who kindly paid for the bus, they travelled to Tom price High School to participate in this one day event. Two teams were entered. Team 1, the girls (Jorja, Lara, Ebony and Ella) and the Team 2,

the boys (Blake, Cameron, Erik and Vincent).

Opti-minds itself was made up of two challenges. One was called the ‘ Long Term Challenge’ and the other, ‘The Spontaneous Challenge’. The Long Term Challenge was given a few weeks before the trip and directed by Mrs Garratt. It involved making a tower that would support six baked bean cans. The challenge was to make it as tall as possible using only a few resources such as paper, glue and elastic bands! Then they had to present their tower in the form of a creative drama

skit, to a large audience made up of all participating teams, parents and other supporters.

The Spontaneous Challenge was exactly as it sounds, spontaneous. Here the students were presented with anything from a sentence, picture or sound and they had to solve this unseen challenge, thinking about not what is was, but what it could be!!! Confused much? Creativity to this solution was the key. And to add more pressure they only had 4 minutes to come up with

a solution and it was done without the aid of any adult! (No teachers allowed!)

Teams were judged on their problem solving skills, use of sustainable practices, and creating thinking skills. As you can

imagine, it was an extremely nerve racking day and here’s what they had to say about it:

Team 1: Lara, Jorja, Ebony and Ella

We were very nervous about performing and we were the team for the Spontaneous Challenge and didn’t know what to expect. It was actually very different to what we were expecting because we were given a picture and had to decide what is was advertising, but we knew not to say the obvious and to think outside the box. It was tricky as we hadn’t really done this before

but we know what to do next time.

We then did our performance which was the most scary thing as there were lots of people watching. We thought we made a few mistakes but no-one knew and we learnt that we needed to be louder when speaking and make eye contact with the

audience, but we were super happy our tower held the beans and the judges liked out design.

The day was so good and we enjoyed watching everyone’s performances and meeting people from other schools. We also

liked playing line-chasey in a big sports hall with lots of lines and spotlight.

Team 2: Blake, Cameron, Erick and Vincent

Opti-MINDS was very hard and very nerve racking. There were so many people when we were performing and it was scary speaking in front of them. The best moment was, although the tower was wobbling when we put the can of beans on the tower it didn’t fall over. We were happy with our success and getting a participation certificate and would probably do it again next

year if we can because we would be better in our performance.

The whole trip was pretty good, pretty enjoyable. The accommodation was fun, staying in the school and we got to play hide

and seek and spot light.

STEM Night in Room 5

On Tuesday 2nd July, Room 5 welcomed their parents and friends into the classroom to showcase all of their wonderful work that they have produced in STEM this term. It was an

absolute treat for the students to take their family along on their learning journey and show them the magic of STEM.

The students’ teamwork, excellent communication and respect for each other, made this whole project possible, which

was very clear and visible to the guests. The students are proud of the evening and we cannot thank the parents enough

for being so supportive and involved in the students’ learning!

Dear Parents/Caregivers – welcome to Week 10! Earlier this week, reports were sent home with your child/ren. Any uncollected reports have been forwarded to the front office and will be available for collection by parents/caregivers next term. As always, teachers put many hours into preparing and writing student reports and I actively encourage you to make contact with your child’s teacher should you have any concerns with their progress. As I write this newsletter, it is clear that our students, staff and school have been doing some wonderful things when it comes to STEM Education. Engaging our students in STEM is critically important as the workforce that we know today is radically changing. Engaging our students in STEM, where they learn important skills such as problem solving, design thinking and collaboration alongside skills in Science, Technologies and Mathematics is all focused around ensuring they are not left behind or forgotten (Ohana) when it comes to this changing world. The New Work Order highlights that “more than half of Australian workers will need to be able to use, configure or build digital systems in the next 2-3 years”. It is information such as this that empowers our staff to ensure that every child from Kindergarten to Year 10 engages in STEM learning each term. STEM in Year 7 & 8: Earlier this week, our Year 7 and 8 students attended the Opti-minds challenge, as part of their STEM learning, in Tom Price and competed against students from Tom Price Senior High School. A big thank you to Mrs Gill for organising this event for our students and for Miss Tess and Mrs Dall for accompanying them. STEM in Year 5 & 6: Speaking of STEM, Room 5 recently showcased their learning in STEM to their parents/caregivers. This event was incredibly well attended and the students did a wonderful job of explaining their design thinking. Well done to Miss Sheridan and the students of Room 5 for the work they have been doing in preparing all our Year 5 and 6 students with the STEM skills they will need for our changing world. STEM as a School: As a Teacher Development School (TDS) for STEM Education, we are recognised for the quality of STEM learning that our students engage in. Recently, we have been asked to mentor schools within the Hedland area as part of the Department of Education’s STEM Initiative. Alongside the work we do as a TDS in STEM, this will see us work in a focused way with schools across within the Pilbara further supporting students engagement in STEM. Miss Tess has been very busy this term in ensuring that when it comes to Physical Education that our students are not left behind or forgotten (Ohana) given our isolation. She has organised for Tennis lessons for our students from Year 1-Year 11, organised the very first Cross Country event in the history of Pannawonica Primary School and is very busy organising three carnivals for next term. Our Sports Carnival which will be held in Week 3 and two Inter-School Carnivals. One Inter-School carnival will take place in Week 5 and will be for our Primary Students and the other will take place in Week 6 and be for our Secondary students. Please look out for the Term 3 Planner which details the dates of these events and watch this space for further information about these upcoming events. A big thank you to Miss Tess in recognition of the organisation that goes into events such as thee. Recently, we have advertised pools for positions at our school. Recruitment from these pools will take place over the school holidays and I look forward to informing our community about these appoints on return to school in Term 3. Speaking of staffing changes, Miss Sheridan will be working every Friday in Room 5 for the remainder of the year starting next term. Miss Dresen will be working a nine day fortnight which will see Mrs Terace teaching in Room 3 each fortnight on a Friday and Mrs Albert will be returning to us a day a week in the role of Program Coordinator: Early Childhood each Thursday for the remainder of the year. Next term, we are also welcoming Miss Alisha Thomson who is completing her final Teaching Practicum in Room 3. Room 3 parents/caregivers have already been informed of this via Seesaw. Miss Thomson has been volunteering her time this week to get to know the students in Room 3; please join me in welcoming Alisha to our Pannawonica family for Term 3. Mrs Terace had the pleasure of welcoming a number of our students to the Deputy Principal’s lunch which took place earlier this term. Students were selected by their classroom teachers for demonstrating outstanding behaviour. Well done to all of our students who were invited. Mrs Terace will also be coordinating our Year 4 PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) testing which will take place in Week 3 of Term 3. Information about this testing will be sent home to Year 4 parents/caregivers in Week 1 of next term. Eligible students engage in PEAC once a week through Webex with a specialist teacher based in Karratha. For further information about PEAC, please contact Mrs Terace. Mrs Blanco, our Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer, has been very busy ensuring that Culture is a prominent feature of our students’ education. To that end, she has been very busy coordinating our NAIDOC celebration which has taken place today and she has been very busy working in our Early Childhood area and engaging our younger students in rich cultural experiences and connecting them to Tuesday Lockyer. Mrs Blanco will be working closely with Miss Ehrlich and our Year 1 students next term as part of their STEM learning. Thank you Mrs Blanco for the work you are doing in this space and ensuring no one is left behind or forgotten (Ohana) Culturally. I am pleased to announce that Mrs Annemie Franck was successful in being appointed to the position of Parent Representative for our School Board. Mrs Franck brings a wealth of knowledge and experience working on Boards and we welcome her and her experiences as part of our School Board. In keeping in line with our school’s vision of Ohana, we are keen to ensure that as we begin the task of working on our new Business Plan for 2020-2022 that no one’s voice is left behind or forgotten in this process. In order to achieve this, we will be surveying our parents/caregivers, community, staff and students across Term 3 in order to capture your thoughts and feedback. All of this information will be used to inform our next cycle of school planning. Further information about these surveys will be communicated out at the beginning of Term 3. Finally, from all of us at Pannawonica Primary School, we wish all of our students and their parents/caregivers a restful and safe break and look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday 23 July. Ben Jamieson—Principal Principal
