Rules of the Game

• The object of chess is to trap your opponent’s king by putting him in check mate

• The player using the white pieces always starts the game

• A player may forfeit the game by tipping over his/her own king

• Players should begin and end every game with a handshake

Pawns• Only move forward• Move only one space

at a time (players have the option of moving their pawns two spaces on the first move of each pawn)

• Can only capture opponent pieces by moving diagonally and occupying that piece’s space

Rooks• Can move forward and

backward vertically or horizontally as many spaces and capture opponent pieces in the same fashion

Knights• Move in an L shape

(Count 2 up and 1 to the side, or 1 up and 2 to the side.

• Always land in opposite color they started in

• Capture opponents in the same fashion

• Only game piece that can jump over other pieces

Bishops• Move diagonally in the

color they start from

• Capture opponents in the same fashion

Queen• Strongest piece on the

board

• Can move and capture pieces like all other pieces on the board except the knight

King

• Can move and capture in any direction one space at a time

• Should be protected at all time

Board Setup

• White corner square on right-hand side of each player• Pawns should be lined up on second line closest to each

player (on grid, line 2 for white and line 7 for black)• Rooks are placed on each corner behind the pawns

(1,a/1,h on white and 8a/8,h on black)• Knights are placed next to each rook (1,b /1g and

8,b/8,g)• Bishops are to be placed next to the knights (1,c/1,f and

8c/8f)• Queens are to be placed next to the bishop on her own

color (White Queen, White Square; Black Queen, Black Square

• King is to be placed next to his Queen
