MARCH 2016
Dear Parents,
It is that time of the year! Registration packets were distributed last week and
must be returned by 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4, to ensure a spot for your
child(ren). We are in the beginning stages of planning for the 2016-2017 school
year and accurate student count is very important when creating the schedule
for the new year. Open enrollment begins Monday, March 7. Thank you to the
many families who completed the registration process this past week. Please
call the school office if you have any questions.
The tentative calendar for the upcoming school year will be available as soon as
the necessary information is received from the Catholic Schools Office.
Although we are planning for the new school year, there is still time to be in-
volved in this year’s activities. There are many upcoming auction parties,
Inaugural Pops Tournament and the annual school auction, to name a
few. Please mark your
calendars and join the
other OLP families for
some fun.
God’s Peace,

MESSAGE FROM
FATHER TOM We are a couple of weeks into our Lenten journey. At School Mass
this week, I asked the students: How are you different or how have
you been changed since we began Lent? That is a good question for all of us to reflect on. Lent is
a time for us to change our ways and focus on what is important. Are we becoming better people,
better Christians, more loving, more forgiving, more prayerful, less critical, and less angry because of
Lent? There are still several weeks to go, so if we haven’t seen the change or progress we would
like, there is no time like today to make the appropriate adjustments. Blessings on your journey!
Pope Francis has asked all parishes around the world to participate in an initiative during this Jubilee
Year of Mercy called, 24 Hours for the Lord. This will take place on March 4 - 5. Beginning at 9:00
a.m. on Friday, March 4, we will have Eucharistic Adoration that continues until 9:00 a.m. on Satur-
day, March 5. There will also be several times when the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered.
Many of our students will participate in Adoration during the day on Friday. I also encourage you to
participate as a family. You can find out more information about this worldwide event in our parish
bulletin or on our parish website.
In connection with the Year of Mercy and as a special focus during Lent, all Catholics are encouraged
to share in the beauty of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If it has been awhile since you celebrated
this sacrament of God’s forgiveness and mercy, now is an opportune time. As mentioned above, we
will be offering several hours for Reconciliation during the March 4 - 5 event. We will also have our
Lenten Reconciliation service on Sunday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m. There will be several priests here
for individual Confession. In addition, we offer weekly Reconciliation from 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. on Satur-
days, and 4:15 - 4:45 p.m. on Sundays. Sharing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a great way to
prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection at Easter.
Many Blessings!
Fr. Tom Holder

Announcements, continued…
ATTENTION ALL 7TH GRADE PARENTS: In early January, a letter was sent home to all 7th grade parents with a noti-
fication that all students are required to have a Tdap vaccine before entering 8th grade. If that information was
already on file, a letter was not sent. Many students have already had this immunization. In response to the
letter, some parents have brought in copies of the vaccination record from their doctor. Thank you to those who
have already done this. For the remaining students, parents need to check vaccination records, or call your doctor
to check on the Tdap vaccine.
Additionally, we were recently informed that the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has changed
the immunization requirements for the next school year. Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, in addition to
the Tdap immunization mentioned above, 8th grade students will also be required to have a dose of Meningococ-
cal vaccine. This vaccine has been required for years for all incoming college students; but, will now be required
at a younger age. One dose will be required for entry into 8th grade and an additional dose before 12th grade.
Some doctors have already started giving this immunization to younger students. Please check your records to see
if your student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
If your current 7th grade student is missing either of the above mentioned
vaccines, please schedule an appointment with your doctor to receive the
vaccination(s). We suggest that you take care of this before the end of the
school year. Summers tend to get busy with vacations and activities; and
doctor’s offices can be hard to get into. Please avoid the rush and schedule
the necessary vaccination(s) now. All students need to be up to date on this BEFORE the start of 8th grade. No
student will be allowed in class in August without proof of these immunizations on file in the health room.
Please send a copy of the vaccination records, indicating completion of both required vaccines, to OLP,
Attention: Nurses.
If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact us at [email protected], or call the health room at
816-251-1123 or 816-251-1130. Thank you, Mary Rupp RN and Kathy Chamberlin RN

EXCITING NEWS FOR OLP PARENTS! Several OLP families have collaborated to kick-start the OLP Family
Babysitting Exchange (FBE). This is an OLP-centered Date Night/Child Care Exchange co-op consisting of OLP
School and ECC families only. The exchange format is a closed group using the Facebook social networking site –
aimed at providing additional mental, spiritual, financial and child care benefits to OLP families as they enjoy in-
creased balance in their lives. There is no catch and no cost – just a cooperative group of “families helping fami-
lies.” Benefits of participating in the OLP FBE include: Ability for parents to get out more to nurture the marriage/
relationship without wearing out Grandma & Grandpa or other family supports; child care/babysitting cost saving;
networking/relationship-building amongst the school community; additional child(ren) influences of families with
similar value sets; and, more out-of-school play opportunities for OLP kids! Many families have joined, several
have published member profiles and one “kid swap” is already on the books! Join OLP’s FBE co-op and make plans
for that date night you’ve been putting off for weeks! For more information: Search FB’s “OLP Family Babysitting
Exchange” and request membership, or contact one of the group coordinators: Katie Bland, Amie Martin, or Mar-

Dear OLP-PTO,
Here’s hoping this March newsletter finds your pace of life calm and enjoyable as we look forward to the final
three months of the school year. My goodness, the year is truly flying by!
Please let me thank each of you for the part that you play in helping, supporting, and maintaining our PTO. There
are all types of volunteers who take on a role in our group, from simply finding time to make it to the store to do-
nate to a class party to running a committee to plan a major event for our school. No part is too small. Thank you
to each and every one of you! From the past month, some special shout-outs go to the Catholic Schools Week
Committee and Teacher of the Year Committee. Catholic Schools Week was a great celebration brought on by
many hours of time from many volunteers. The announcement of Mrs. Oberkrom as the 2016 Teacher of the
Year was a strong reminder of how powerful the work of our PTO can be. Thank you too to our Welcome Com-
mittee chairs, Maribeth Joyce and Mary Beth Rybowicz. January marks the official start of school tour season
for OLP. It’s wonderful that you share your time to be ambassadors for our school and help interested families
make the choice to come to OLP. Thank you as well to the Hospitality Committee and Kristen Seelbrede for or-
ganizing and providing refreshments to welcome families to Kindergarten Round Up. February also saw the cele-
brations for the winning classes from last semester’s BoxTops contest. Thank you to Rebate Coordinator, Sabrina
Henry, for planning the Bring Your Own Device Party for 5th Grade and the Dance Party for 1st Grade. There was
much anticipation and excitement in my household for these days! Finally, thank you to Room Parents for the
amazing Valentine’s parties you planned and hosted. Your planning and attention to creating a fun afternoon for
our students is inspiring. Thank you!
PTO is at the point of the school year where things quiet down for a bit. As the Auction kicks into full gear, the
demands on your time shift. I hope that in some way you can find a way to support our Auction as it comes to life
and creates so much support for our school!
We are still on the lookout for parents to take on the leadership roles for PTO in the Executive Board and some
Chair positions. Please see the PTO section on page 6 of Panther Prints for that listing. In his book Rediscover
Jesus, Catholic author Matthew Kelly discusses how Jesus calls us to be radically gener-
ous in our giving, whether it be time, talent or treasure. As PTO president, one of the
occupational hazards is that thoughts of PTO often come into one’s prayer life as well.
My prayer for our school community is that you will consider if you can be “radically
generous” with your time to serve your school in a greater capacity next year.
With peace and blessings,
Katie Reddig, OLP-PTO President

School Advisory Board Update
As we welcome the Season of Lent, we reflect on our relationship with Christ.
What are the obstacles in our life that hinder our relationship with Christ? Lent
is a time to focus on repenting and rebuilding our relationship with Christ and
with one another.
In our meeting, we spoke about how our school community is working towards strengthening their re-
lationship with Christ through the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The children, teachers and staff will be tak-
ing the time to pray together the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every Wednesday during Lent. The children
were all given a special prayer bracelet to pray. I have accepted the offer extended by the school to
take a moment at 3:00 p.m. each Wednesday to say the Chaplet.
There are many opportunities in our school community that present themselves to us to strengthen
our relationship with Christ, not only throughout Lent, but all through the year by the many opportuni-
ties for service. As a Catholic School parent, grandparent, and/or friend, we are called to serve our
school and children through volunteering. Volunteering is the heart and soul of our school. It teaches
our children that they are important and shows them that, just as Christ was called to serve, so are we.
OLP has so many opportunities for us to serve, whether it is on a daily basis or a one-time event. Vol-
unteering can seem overwhelming. You don’t know what will be expected of you or how much time
will be asked of you. We ask that you turn your worries to God, and take the plunge. Say “Yes” to ser-
vice, to volunteer. Come to a PTO Meeting; assist a room parent with a snack for a party; call a couple
of businesses that you are familiar with and ask them to support our children with a donation, or as a
sponsor for the Annual School Auction.
My daughter is in first grade at OLP. When we joined the school, I didn’t know any of the other parents
and volunteering seemed overwhelming and very scary. These people all knew each other. And let’s
face it - I have a full time job, I am on numerous committees for work, I am planning conferences, and
let’s not forget the neighborhood HOA, plus dance and piano for my daughters. WHO HAS TIME FOR
MORE? What more could I give? So I started small and went to a couple of PTO meetings. That wasn’t
so bad, so I helped make some food for a classroom party. Then I helped at the Father/Daughter
Dance, since it was on the weekend and didn’t interfere with work.
The more I said “Yes” to Christ by volunteering, the more invested and connected my family felt to the
school. Even my husband needed a little push at volunteering; so I volunteered him to help with the
Buddy Bench. Our little commitments have provided us with the
opportunity to meet more parents, teachers and students. My
family has truly become part of the OLP School Family. All because
we accepted Christ’s calling to service.
