A Self-assessment of One’s Qualification as a Teacher Leader

I believe that teacher leader are made rather than born. Honestly I never dream to be a

teacher. When I was young, I kept on saying “I want to be an engineer someday.” But by fate, I

am now a high school teacher. Being a teacher takes a hard time for me because I don’t like to

talk in front of group of people. I’m not a perfect speaker at all, but it should develop to myself,

because good communication skill is one of the most basic skills a teacher must be practiced. I

am not just a teacher, I’m also a leader.

When I started assessing myself, “How am I as a teacher leader?” I find it really hard

because I never tried having my key roles. It seem that I am not suited for leadership. But

looking back on my experiences in my fourteen years of working in my chosen profession, I

realized that those experiences develop me into a teacher leader, and this leadership role

started inside the classroom. Dealing with 50-60 students with different skills, nature and

social background was really a challenging role. The fact that I can able to influence and lead

them to make learning meaningful is quite a rewarding. But since I’m handling lower sections,

most of my students have behavioral problem. They have shown negative behavior towards

their studies. I got to the point where I want to quit teaching. But because I consider the

profession as a call, I don’t give up, instead I tried different strategies to motivate my students

to become interested in my subject matter. I didn’t stop until my lesson has an impact to my

students.

I was an adviser within ten years in my entire teaching, I also conducted parents

conference. We have classroom PTA meeting every quarter, where we have discussed some

issues regarding the performance of their children. We also have a conversation regarding on

some physical problems, and with the help of these parents, we come up with some solutions.

Another experience that asses my qualification as a teacher leader is the day to day

activities in dealing with my colleagues and superiors. As subordinates, I just keep on respect

and follow them. I am silent worker. Honestly, I prefer to be a follower than to be a leader.

Sometimes I open up or discussed my ideas to my colleagues. If there is an opinion they

needed in a decision making I speak up. My colleagues contributed much on my formation as

teacher leader. I learned to respect their views and I am open to new ideas although there are

times when misunderstanding surpasses but still we are able to resolved it. Those experiences

molded me into a teacher leader.

Indeed, the difficulties, challenges and obstacles I experienced in my teaching profession

shaped me into who I am now as a teacher leader.

Area in the School System That Needs to be Improved

Quality Education is one of the primary goal of Philippine education. Every school is

aiming to achieve such goal. In our school, everyone is working hard to increase the

performance of our school towards quality education and yet we have some system that is

needed to improve. The system of mass promotion is now an issue in our school. We practice

this system for a couple of years. Mass promotion is in contrast to the objective of our

education, “ the quality education,” because it may decreased the standard of education. In

our school, students who are not qualified and not able to comply the requirements are still

promoted to the next year level. Since they still promoted even if they cannot comply, they

become lazy and sometimes, they must forgot the value of study habit. They become

irresponsible student. And the worst is they cannot able attend classes regularly due to loss of

their interest. Absenteeism become a habit which may be resulted to failing grades. There will

be a domino effect. If a particular student was promoted without exerting any effort to his

studies there will be a tendency that he well do the same until he finished high school.

In contrary, if we are going to broaden the concept and understanding of this practice or

system, there has a good intention and reason of the implementation of this system, and that is

not to harm the student, instead it may develop their self-esteem despite of the weaknesses in

some area or subject. The students were given another chance to fix their grades and for their

improvement in subject areas with lower average. Students and parents did not realize the

reason but instead they abuse the consideration rendered to them. Some students think that

even if they did not exert effort on their studies, they well still promoted. They develop this

belief “I will still pass even if I will not comply the requirements, I will still pass even if I will not

attend my class, I will still pass even if I failed in the exam, I will still pass even if I will not do my

assignments”. This is a very sad reality. Due to this system develop poor performance,

evidence shows in the rank of our National Achievement Test ( NAT). Our school was rank 4 th

from the bottom among the 42 high school in Quezon City.

The only intervention that the school propose in order to help the student is to call the

parents and inform them on the performances of their children. Some teachers conduct a

home visitation. They also implemented remedial classes but only few are doing this.

However some students still does not improve despite of the effort of their teacher and

adviser. The teachers have no choice is to promote those students.

Proposed Program to Improved School Performance

Every school had been aiming for quality education. If the school performance was

improved or accelerated, there is a progress for aiming this goal. There should be changes in

case of problem arises and needed to adapt solution that will lead to change and improvement.

It is the duty of every teacher leader to adopt some changes in order to eliminate mal practices

of the school.

Since we need to adopt or follow the system of mass promotion despite of the negative

effect to the performance of the school we need to create new program in order to improve

the system.

The following structural procedure for the propose program to improve mass

promotion. First, call the parents of the students with failed grades and conduct a parent-

teacher conference. Inform the parents about the performance of their children. Ask for

parental involvement. Every week parents should visit the school to follow up the progress of

their children. Second, student must be referred to guidance office for counseling. The office

can organize counseling program open to students whether it is group or individual. Third,

teachers will conduct remedial classes during opposite session, morning shift in the afternoon

1-2 pm and afternoon shift in the morning 11-12, every Friday. These remedial classes should

be approved by the principal and parents. Remediation may done by the subject teacher where

in the student got failing grades. Instructional material must be attractive and suited to the

needs of the students. Teaching methods are in modular approach by means of checklist,

coaching, practical, and activity report or presentation. Remediation will be held in the library.

Fourth, The teacher facilitator will update and give their narrative report regarding the learners’

performance to the Department Head and to the respective adviser as per required to check for

the learner’s progress. Lastly, daily records of students must be submitted to the guidance

office for record purposes and should be forwarded to the principal.

If the particular student will progress remediation will be stop, if not the said student

well continue to attend remedial classes until he/she will progress. There must be a closed

supervision by the principal so that all of the teachers who are being responsible for this activity

will do their job well done.
