Papers & Midterms & Finals, Oh My!
Presented by Juli Shulem, PCC, CPC, MS Productivity ADHD Coach
The Game Just Got Harder…
The rules have changed. The Student’s life takes place in a totally different environment. No Parents. No advocates. Fewer Friends. All New People, Places, and Expectations.
All that was once familiar & easy is no longer the same.
…Shall we begin?
This presentation will help equip you with the tools & skills the ADHD student will need to flourish, and succeed, at this very crucial juncture in their life: Topics addressed: à What to expect…and not expect from college à College Resources to be aware of à Things to do now to be better prepared later à Navigating living on their own à Self-management skills and techniques à Strategies for Academic & Life Success
They’re not in High School Anymore!
Regular schedule roughly 8am-3pm à
The curriculum is pre-determined and they are placed in classes by the school directly à
Classes can occur anytime between 8am and 10pm
There are options of what is taken for a major. Plus deadlines regarding withdrawing, dropping, and registering for classes. Students must determine what they need and enroll on time.
High School vs. College
Regular homework given and due daily or weekly à
Homework and reading monitored by teacher via quizzes and exams à
à Assignments are all scheduled but not done in class. All assignments – are homework!
à No one will know if you did or didn’t do the reading – you must self-monitor and stay on track – it’s too hard to play catch-up in college
High School vs. College
Many test and quiz scores make up the final gradeà
Participation in class counts for a decent percentage of the grade à
à Often a Mid-Term exam and a Final exam determine the entire grade
à Achievement counts – test scores generally determine the majority of your final grade

High School vs. College
Attendance is monitoredà
Teacher knows you by name, your siblings, your family… à
à No one may even know the student exists in the larger lecture classes
à Professors don’t know who you are
High School vs. College
Teachers offer help after or before school and often during class à
Classes gradually ramp up and there is time to learn the material à
Students are gone from home all day so books & materials need to be carried to class all day long à
à Professors have office hours or make appointments to see students
à Courses go quickly and begin the very first day of the term
à There can be lots of time between classes so only essential books & materials can be carried to class
High School vs. College
Weekly information provided on what is expected to read, study & prepare for à
Step-by-step guidance and milestone deadlines for larger projects & papers à
à Syllabus shows entire coursework to be covered from day one
à Rarely are there reminders for the steps due on a project or paper – just the deadline
Papers!
à Schedule all steps à Select Topic
à Draft Idea à Outline Paper
à Write Draft à Edit Paper
à Write Final Paper à Submit!
High School vs. College
Parents can be advocates as well as speak to teachers and counselors à
They can’t kick students out for bad grades – you may even have to stay longer à
à Due to FERPA students are on their own. Legally parents can’t speak for them
à Academic Probation is a reality and colleges can keep students from returning if grades falter after two terms – no refunds!
High School vs. College
Parents provided food and meals and took care of basic needs à
Parents often made sure students had clean clothes and a clean environment à
Parents monitor and help remind students of what they may be forgetting to do à
à Students need to seek out their own food, and schedule when they will eat
à Yeh, those days are over!
à No one is there to take care of them, remind them, nor pick up the pieces, should they mess up

you now have an awareness about what your son or daughter can expect.
If you are a student graduating High School…
you have the opportunity to put some of these ideas into practice and utilize the resources available at the college you attend…
