We continue to advertise our world class website on the famous British property website ‘Rightmove’, the Cyprus Mail,

Essential Paphos magazine and the Russian magazine ‘My Island’ (Moi Ostrov) attracting sellers as well as buyers.

We are seeing consolidation of prices at current realistic levels. As more people wake up to the fact that this is a wonderful opportunity to buy villas, prices will increase however prices for apartments will continue to be soft because there is a big oversupply of these types of properties.

Troika & Cyprus Bailout DiscussionsThe 'Troika', representing the IMF, the ECB and the European Union, has arrived on the island again rsand the whole nation is holding its breath. Most people expect a great deal from the troika, not least the opening of a new area of transparency in Cyprus. A degree of skepticism remains, mainly because nothing is ever as it seems in Cyprus. However, the present crisis facing the country has focused the national psyche on the wide disparity between public and private sector, and has led to expectations of greater accountability and diminishing Mediterranean 'laissez faire' attitudes from business and public leaders.

The talks opened with the Central Bank Governor, Ministers of Finance, Labour & Commerce and the Under-secretary to the President of Cyprus. The Troika's findings and their assessment of the Cypriot economy were tabled but little has been publicly reported.

What did make headlines was that early retirement applications from civil servants are on the rise, over the payout 'bonus' fears. Given that public servants do not contribute anything towards their hefty pensions and bonuses, 'losing' some of it would be unpleasant to say the least. The Cyprus public sector is one of the largest in the EU per head of population and is in dire need of reform. In 2011 around 1,600 positions were filled.

The visiting delegation also met with the representatives of the Popular Bank and the Bank of Cyprus, which are in need of some 2.3billion Euros to bail them out, quoting record write-offs due to their massive ‘Greek’ exposure. It would make interesting reading to ascertain which local companies and on what basis, secured huge loans for their speculative Greek ventures.

So the nation is watching and listening, hoping against hope that the 'Troika' will bring in an era of openness and transparency. Undoubtedly there is a lot of work to be done and many barriers to be taken down....the next few weeks will be exciting indeed.

Bill Clinton in CyprusOn his recent visit to Cyprus the former US President Bill Clinton was guest speaker at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. The University holds coveted accreditation as a European University (one of 40 universities in Europe with such a distinction) and regularly attracts leaders in education, finance, research and industry.

The former President is the Honorary Chancellor of the Laureate International Universities Network, of which the University of Cyprus European University has been a member since 2005. He is also founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative which has a focus to empower people around the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. The foundation brings together former Heads of State, Nobel Prize Winners and leading CEO’s, philanthropists, NGO’s and the media, annually.

With an eye on social issues and the impact of the economic crisis across the globe, the former President stressed ‘global interdependence’ as the issue facing society today and the urgent need to invest in productive cooperation rather than conflict. He stressed the key aspects to a better future for all, are through education, knowledge, research and innovation.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance, Era Kozakou Markoullis and Vasos Shiarly, Government Spokesman, Stephanos Stephanou, as well as government officials, political leaders, MPs and diplomats were among the guests.

From the harbour walk up towards the Begonia Garden centre at the traffic lights and we are on the left just before the “Wishing Tree”. Coming from the Tomb of the kings turn right at the traffic lights (or cut through by the Roman Hotel) and we are a short way down on the right just after the “Wishing Tree”.Office hours are 9am to 5.30pm 6 days a week with no break for lunch. So if you are working and only have your lunch break to come and see us, you are welcome!

Family TiesIn our last Newsletter and Paphos Digest, we mentioned our daughter-in-law Mingqian's graduation as a Doctor of International Law, with Honours, in Shanghai which Anna and I attended. She has since secured a position at the university which takes her on lecture tours and conferences throughout China and internationally. Her latest official trip was to Taiwan.

Good news to report about our daughter Andrea and our youngest son Daryl.

After graduating with BA (Hons) from Chelsea College of Art last year, Andrea saw a niche in the market in inner London for her photographic talents and has established her own professional photographic business taking photos of property for London estate agents.

Armed with a professional NIKON camera, buckets of natural flair and having been lucky enough to have been mentored by a retired professional photographer Andrea has impressed her clients with her brilliant photographs.

Andrea did a similar job for Fitzgerald Marketing here in Paphos and taught her Mum, Anna, how to get best results from her NIKON.

Daryl graduated from University College of London (UCL) 3 years ago and decided that he wanted to get more experience in Australia before going on to finish his Masters at UCL. The Bartlett Architectural School is world famous and Daryl was lucky enough to get in there.

He has now left Australia and after a brief look around Holland and London he has landed a very nice job with a small architectural firm in Notting Hill, London.

Page 6: Paphos Digest

In his 'spare' time he has also established a thriving business, Light Reading Melbourne, which has earned him a write up in Vogue Magazine in Australia and the Netherlands.

London 2012 OlympicsAt last the Olympics have started and hopefully will produce over 2 weeks of fantastic sporting action. It’s a time when we can all take a breather from the trials and tribulations of life and just enjoy watching the youth of the world endeavouring to be “Faster, Higher, Stronger” or to be exact, “Citius, Altius, Fortius” as the Olympic motto states.

It’s also a time when the world is supposed to be at peace as the Olympic Truce is a sacred tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to the 8th century BC. A truce was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries. During the truce period (lasting up to three months), wars were suspended, armies were prohibited from threatening the Games, legal disputes were stopped, and death penalties were forbidden.

In 1992, the International Olympic Committee renewed this tradition by calling upon all nations to observe the Truce and the Olympic Truce was revived by UN resolution 48/11 of 25 October 1993.

In 1996, the Athens Bid Committee committed to reviving the Olympic Truce and promoting it to the world through the Olympic Flame Relay. Three years later, the International Olympic Committee announced the establishment of the International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre in

Page 7: Paphos Digest

cooperation with Greece. The vision was to protect the interests of athletes and sport, and to promote peaceful principles in modern day. Each host city was encouraged to embrace the meaning and spirit of the Olympic Truce in the planning and staging of the Games.

The opening ceremony in the Olympic park seems to have been well received, though what the Republic of Kiribati thought about is anyone’s guess – even the British seem bemused by some parts!!

The early medals have been decided with a few surprises – Spain eliminated from the men’s football, the French winning the men’s 4x100 swimming relay and Mark Cavendish not winning a medal in the men’s cycling road race. That’s life, unpredictable and therefore exciting.

Cyprus first sent a team to the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games and then a team of 14 to the Moscow Olympics Games in Moscow later in that year. They have not missed an Olympic Games since.

Their shooters have consistently achieved top-10 placings. Georgios Akhilleous finished fifth in the men's skeet at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He also carried his country's flag in the Opening Ceremony. This year, the flag was carried by tennis player Marcos Baghdatis.

In athletics, long jumper Maria Lambrou competed in three Olympic Games (1976, 1980 and 1988). Before 1980, Cypriot athletes participated as part of the Greece team. At the first Olympic Games of the modern era in Athens in 1896, Ioannes Frangoudes (born in Zakynthos but a native of Limassol) won the 25m rapid pistol. He was also second in the three position rifle and third in men's free pistol.

The first Cypriot woman to compete was sprinter and hurdler Dominitsa Lanitou Kavounidou, who ran for Greece in the 100m and 80m hurdles at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games. She also took part in the London 1948 Olympic Games.

At the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, Stavros Tziortis Giorgis finished sixth in the 400m hurdles final. Cyprus have yet to win a gold medal competing as an independent nation.

This time the Cypriots have solid performers in shooting and sailing. The fearsome shooting duo of George Achilleos and Antonakis Andreou could well win a skeet medal in London, while Kyriakos Ioannou should go one step further than Beijing and at least make the final of the men's high jump.

homes, on the outskirts of the seaside Pissouri village. Pissouri Elegance Villa

Page 9: Paphos Digest

The master bedroom enjoys the privilege of the entire wing and here the semblance of space continues with the high pitched ceiling and an entire wall of sliding windows. The pitched ceiling theme continues to an enormous balcony supported by columns. The stunning views carry on forever…. The en-suite is utterly luxurious and you’ll be

impressed by the spacious walk-in robes.

The other bedrooms, at the far end of the landing, feature private balconies, sharing a stylish bathroom.

On the ground floor, the massive living room is on the same side as the master bedroom but opens along the side, to a wonderful sunny terrace which connects to the family sitting/dining room on the other extreme of the building. The expansive open terrace extends to the semi-enclosed outdoor dining area and overlooks the inviting pool and garden on a level below.

The master kitchen is exactly that. This well designed kitchen is a fine example of entertaining made easy. Two huge fridges, two double ovens, a 5 burner hob, acres of storage space, granite worktops plus all the handy kitchen accessories….

On the lower level, a grand sized living room with a functional kitchenette and a wall of sliding windows merge seamlessly with the vast covered pool-side terrace. On the other side, a huge open plan room that serves as games room, though it could easily be adapted to house a one bedroom apartment (all services are in-situ).

The villa has a timeless attraction. Impeccably maintained it offers absolute privacy, flexibility and appeal. Instantly liveable, Viewing is a must.

What's On With JezebelAugust is the month of beach parties and music festivals, and with many promoters taking advantage of the splendid weather putting things on at the last minute, it pays to keep checking the listings site for last-minute events. Pafos harbour in particular has been busier than ever with events. Be sure to take a cushion or a fold-up chair, a hat and suncream if it’s a day event, and plenty of cool drinks - though check what the venue will allow. Rock FM DJs are all taking three weeks off this month, so there will be 24/7 music - but the listings site will still be updated almost daily - no rest for some! Chill out and check out www.groovejetmedia.com listings page.
