Style Conventions

Document Conventions

Formatting conventions are used throughout this guide as a method of providing consistency for notes, cautions, and warnings.

Notes Notes appear throughout the manual to provide additional information on a topic, including technical details, exceptions to instructions and other pertinent information. These notes are identified by the notepad symbol to the right and bold italics text.

Cautions Cautions indicate recommendations or important information for the user to know before proceeding. They can also indicate where certain actions could cause damage to the unit. They are identified by the exclamation mark in a triangle and bold italics text. This text appears in gold bold italics text if the user is viewing the manual in electronic PDF form on their computer.

Warnings Warnings indicate a danger of injury to the user. They are identified by the exclamation mark in a triangle and bold italics text. This text appears in red bold italics text if the user is viewing the manual in electronic PDF form on their computer.

Keys and Keystroke Conventions

Portable keys and keystroke conventions are used throughout this manual to identify the difference between a key on the portable and keystrokes input by the user. Brackets such as: “<Scan>” indicate a key on the Falcon Portable. Data or keystrokes entered by the user are printed in a monospaced typeface.

Technical Support

PSC Website Technical Support

The most comprehensive source for technical support and information for PSC products is the PSC website: www.pscnet.com/html/support.htm. Select Support from the sidebar for technical support. The site offers product registration, warranty information, answers to frequently asked questions (product FAQs), product manuals, product tech notes, software updates, patches, demos, and instructions for returning products for repair.

Reseller Technical support

Another excellent source for technical assistance and information is an authorized PSC reseller. A reseller is directly acquainted with specific types of businesses, application software, and computer systems and, therefore, is in the best position to provide individualized assistance.

E-Mail Technical Support

If the solution to a technical support question is not available through the PSC website or a local reseller, contact PSC technical support directly via E-mail at [email protected].

Telephone Technical Support

For those without E-mail access, please call (541) 685-3600.

Overview

The Falcon Portable Applications Library (PAL) is a collection of handy applications that you can use with the PSC Falcon™ portable data-collection terminal. PAL gives you the flexibility to customize your Falcon for specific purposes without using a programming application. In fact, you can use PAL even if you don’t know anything about programming.

When shipped from PSC, each Falcon unit contains an applications package called PAL2. If your Falcon has been customized, it may be programmed with other or additional applications.

PAL2 includes the following PAL applications:! Inventory: for inventory control. Customize it to collect

item-and-quantity information or item-only data. An optional date-and-time stamp records when each entry is made.

! Assets: for tracking assets at various locations.! Item Tracking: for tracking check-in and check-out of

items at one or more locations.! Custom: for creating and using a customized data-

collection program.

If only one or two of the PAL applications are needed, they can be installed individually on the Falcon, and PAL2 can be removed.

Note: For complete information about input modes and the Falcon keypad, refer to the Falcon User’s Guides and the Falcon Advanced User’s Guides.

Each PAL application contains user prompts that can be changed as necessary. Program names displayed on the Falcon can also be changed.

Password security allows a manager, supervisor, or systems administrator to customize a Falcon with PAL, start an application, and then hand the Falcon to a worker. Without the password, the worker cannot switch applications or make changes to an application’s title or prompts.

If further customization is necessary, use PSC’s Universal Program Generator (UPG) to edit the source file for PAL. UPG is a Windows™ application that provides an easy-to-follow user interface for creating and editing Falcon applications.

For more information on UPG, contact a PSC representative, visit our website at www.pscnet.com, or send an e-mail message to [email protected].

Starting PAL2

Unless your Falcon has been customized to start with a different application, the PAL2 application suite starts up whenever you boot up the unit. If you have exited from PAL2, enter GO at the C:\> prompt to restart it. The information shown at the left below is displayed. Press the <ENTER> key to go to the PAL2 main menu, shown at the right below.

Making Menu Selections

The keypresses required to select a function-key option in a PAL application depend on whether the application is at an input field or a menu.

When the cursor in the Falcon’s viewport is in an input field, the Falcon is expecting scanned or keyed-in data. To select a function-key option, you must press the <FN 1> key before pressing the key for the function. For example, to select <F2>, you would press the <FN 1> key and then the 2 key.

When the PAL application is at a menu, the current input mode of the Falcon determines what keypresses are needed. With the Falcon in Normal mode, you just need to press the key for the function. For example, to select <F2> in a menu in Normal mode, you would press the <2> key. With the Falcon in Alpha mode, you must press the <FN 1> key before pressing the appropriate key for the function.

Changing Setup Options

Setting or Removing a Password

You can set a password for PAL. When a password is set, PAL prompts the user for it when entering or exiting an application. Setting a password lets you set up and start an application for someone else to use without worrying about the user changing any settings on the Falcon.

On portables with 8-line displays, two Setup Options menus provide access to screens for customizing the applications, setting or removing a password, communicating with a PC, and setting up other features.

To get to the primary Setup Options menu, select <F5> at the PAL2 main menu. From there, you can access the More Options menu by pressing the <M> key.

On Portables with 16 lines or more, there is only one Setup Options menu. The options are the same whether presented on one or two screens. The remainder of this section will reference only one Setup Options screen.

Restoring the Original Defaults

PAL2 gives you the opportunity to return the program to its original defaults (as shipped from PSC) after making changes to any settings.

Customizing Inventory, Assets, & Item Tracking Applications

To restore the defaults, select <F7>, Restore Defaults. The screen shown at the left will be displayed. Press the Y key, for “Yes,” to reboot the Falcon with the original PAL2 defaults; otherwise, select <F10> or press the <N> key or the <ENTER> key to return to the Setup Options menu. When you exit and restart the program later, the original defaults will be restored.

Caution: Do not make this selection unless you are absolutely sure you want to restore the defaults. Selecting <F2> immediately changes all the settings, including those for the Custom application and the password. Although the reset does not affect the current PAL2 session, you will see the results when you reboot the Falcon.

Creating a New Data File

Changing Input-Field Behavior

To change the way input is received and displayed in the Falcon, select <F4> (Advanced Options) from the Inventory, Assets, or Item Tracking setup menu or <F3> from the Custom setup menu. Input and display formats are specified with the following syntax:

[configuration parameters],[max length],[default],[data identifer],[entry pattern],[valid characters],[Falcon key state],[symbology ID],[scan timeout]

All the variables are optional. However, any variables used must be specified in the order shown in the syntax statement above, with commas between them. Because the order is significant, any variable not specified must be delimited with a comma,

PAL keeps collected data in a separate file for each application. The default filenames are:

Inventory INV.TXT

Assets ASSET.TXT

Item Tracking CHKIN.TXT and CHKOUT.TXT

Custom CUSTOM.TXT

To create a new data file for an application, select <F3> from the application’s setup menu. Type a name for the new file and press the <ENTER> key.

To continue using the current file, just press the <ENTER> key.

Note: When creating a new data file, the existing one remains on the Falcon drive but is no longer used to record data.

unless it occurs later in the syntax statement than all the used variables.

The variables are defined as follows:

In the example shown at the left, Input 1 uses the first two variables, configuration parameters and max length. The remaining variables are not used.

Input 2 uses the first three variables (configuration parameters, max length, and default) and the sixth variable, valid characters. Extra commas between the third and sixth variables delimit the fourth and fifth variables, which are not used.

Transferring Collected Data

When you collect data, the Falcon stores the data in memory. (The data will be retained even when you shut the Falcon off.) The more memory your Falcon has, the more data it can store. When you finish collecting data with the Falcon, or when the memory fills up, you can upload the data to your computer.

Connect the Falcon to your computer with the Falcon serial cable, or place it in a Falcon Dock or 4-Slot Dock. Select <F2> (Send) from the main menu of the PAL application you are using.

The Falcon immediately begins transmitting the data file using the protocol and baud rate selected in the Serial Setup.

If you need to change the baud rate or cancel the file transfer for any reason, press the <ESC> key. The program will return to the application menu.

Note: Refer to page 18 for information about changing serial transfer settings.
