What does fruitfulness look and sound like for disciples of Jesus? This weekend’s gospel is part of Jesus’ teaching on the true vine, the vinedresser, the branches and the possibility and potential of fruit. Anyone who makes a living on the land, farming any kind of produce, knows how important fruitfulness is for one’s livelihood and future prosperity. If a property and its plantings are not fruitful, this ultimately means nothing to sell and therefore no income to live off. However, this scenario also means that those who are dependent on the produce to be fed and nourished, but who don’t grow the food themselves, go without and starve. Suffice to say fruitfulness is a big deal! Well, if it’s a big deal physically, it’s also a big deal, perhaps even bigger, to be spiritually fruitful. Remember the words of Christ? “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Mark 8:36) To be fruitful solely for one’s own advancement and comfort, to the detriment or ignorance of others, is both selfish and sinful. So what do we mean by saying that one must be spiritually fruitful in their lives? Well firstly it’s important to remember what the scriptures say about the Fruits of the Spirit. In his letter to the Galatians St. Paul writes: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22-23). These might seem like simple things to be in the world, but their impact is far deeper and transformative if lived fully. How many of us can honestly say that we have achieved a life that embodies these kinds of virtues authentically and consistently? I think we all struggle with them at some point. That’s natural. Yet these are the tip of the iceberg in terms of being spiritually fruitful in one’s life. We need look no further than the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) in Article 7 detailing the ‘Virtues’. Herein lies a further dimension of what it means to be fruitful as a member of the vine, connected to Christ. There are the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance, (CCC 1805-1809) which are to play a pivotal role in a Christian’s life. Then there are the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity (or Love) (CCC 1812-1829) which have multiple dimensions inherent in each one. For example, in regards of faith, “The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it… Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation” (CCC 1816). In this instance, the Catechism reminds us that so often we can think we are living the fullness of faith by simply believing. However belief is only the first necessary part. Faith is so much more than an intellectual assent to certain tenants of belief, or the disposition of one’s heart, or even the expression of this faith in worship and service. All of these elements are essential and important, but faith must also transform the totality of one’s life and move us out into sharing that faith with others in service and witness. Not easy, but necessary. I encourage you to read this section of the Catechism in what it encourages us to do and be in the world as Disciples. In order to be spiritually fruitful in these and many other ways we must be connected to the vine. We cannot do anything without Christ, who is our life. Hence being intimately connected to him and receiving nourishment and life from him is fundamental. This means that we are people of prayer, with a personal relationship with the Lord. It means that we are people who worship our God in community, especially in the celebration of Mass, where we not only offer glory and thanksgiving to God, but are also fed and nourished by his Word and the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. It means we should listen to the Lord’s voice in the Scriptures daily and allow that word to speak truth, comfort, challenge and guidance into our lives. It means that we serve, not just the people with whom we feel comfortable, but in particular those on the existential peripheries of our society. It also means that if we are not bearing fruit, not bearing good fruit, or not bearing much fruit, then we need to be pruned. Such pruning can come in the form of a gentle word of correction and encouragement by a family member or friend. It can come in the form of God-inspired self-awareness where we become mindful of an area where we can grow or of which we need to repent. It can come about especially in the experience of God’s guidance and mercy in the sacrament of reconciliation. Whatever way we are pruned, each one of us needs this opportunity to help us grow, regardless of our life experience or maturity in the faith. The alternative is not so promising. If we refuse to engage with the Lord, knowingly reject the gifts of God, and turn in on ourselves in hardness of heart, we might find that we cut ourselves off from the vine of life, and, as Christ says: “Cut off from me you can do nothing.” Such a branch withers and dies. So let us seek to thrive and bear fruit. The Church needs people who are alive as disciples: growing, learning and vibrant in faith. Blessings, Fr. Jason Middleton

BEARING FRUIT IN AND FOR THE KINGDOM

What does it mean to ‘bear fruit’ as Christians? What does

fruitfulness look and sound like for disciples of Jesus? This

weekend’s gospel is part of Jesus’ teaching on the true vine,

the vinedresser, the branches and the possibility and potential

of fruit. Anyone who makes a living on the land, farming any

kind of produce, knows how important fruitfulness is for

one’s livelihood and future prosperity. If a property and its

plantings are not fruitful, this ultimately means nothing to sell

and therefore no income to live off. However, this scenario

also means that those who are dependent on the produce to be

fed and nourished, but who don’t grow the food themselves,

go without and starve. Suffice to say fruitfulness is a big deal!

Well, if it’s a big deal physically, it’s also a big deal, perhaps

even bigger, to be spiritually fruitful. Remember the words of

Christ? “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world

and forfeit his life?” (Mark 8:36) To be fruitful solely for

one’s own advancement and comfort, to the detriment or

ignorance of others, is both selfish and sinful. So what do we

mean by saying that one must be spiritually fruitful in their

lives? Well firstly it’s important to remember what the

scriptures say about the Fruits of the Spirit. In his letter to

the Galatians St. Paul writes: “The fruit of the Spirit is love,

joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,

gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22-23). These might seem like

simple things to be in the world, but their impact is far deeper

and transformative if lived fully. How many of us can

honestly say that we have achieved a life that embodies these

kinds of virtues authentically and consistently? I think we all

struggle with them at some point. That’s natural.

Yet these are the tip of the iceberg in terms of being spiritually

fruitful in one’s life. We need look no further than the

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) in Article 7 detailing

the ‘Virtues’. Herein lies a further dimension of what it means

to be fruitful as a member of the vine, connected to Christ.

There are the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice,

Fortitude and Temperance, (CCC 1805-1809) which are to

play a pivotal role in a Christian’s life. Then there are the

Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity (or Love)

(CCC 1812-1829) which have multiple dimensions inherent in

each one. For example, in regards of faith, “The disciple of

Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also

profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it…

Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for

salvation” (CCC 1816). In this instance, the Catechism

reminds us that so often we can think we are living the

fullness of faith by simply believing. However belief is only

the first necessary part. Faith is so much more than an

intellectual assent to certain tenants of belief, or the

disposition of one’s heart, or even the expression of this faith

in worship and service. All of these elements are essential and

important, but faith must also transform the totality of one’s

life and move us out into sharing that faith with others in

service and witness. Not easy, but necessary. I encourage you

to read this section of the Catechism in what it encourages us

to do and be in the world as Disciples.

In order to be spiritually fruitful in these and many other ways

we must be connected to the vine. We cannot do anything

without Christ, who is our life. Hence being intimately

allow that word to speak truth, comfort, challenge and

guidance into our lives. It means that we serve, not just the

people with whom we feel comfortable, but in particular those

on the existential peripheries of our society.

It also means that if we are not bearing fruit, not bearing good

fruit, or not bearing much fruit, then we need to be pruned.

Such pruning can come in the form of a gentle word of

correction and encouragement by a family member or friend.

It can come in the form of God-inspired self-awareness where

OLPS Chapel Works Tewantin - works funded by parishioner donation Air-conditioning has been installed. The air-conditioning is set to 24C and will cool or heat automatically to that temperature when the push button switch in the chapel is activated. The switch turns the unit on for a one hour period so it would be appreciated if the windows are not opened or the door left open when the air-conditioner is turned on. The unit will stop after one hour and can be restarted again at that time if required. New flooring has been purchased for installation and this will be followed by works on the access door to install a pin code lock, glass insert and auto closer. Saturday 5th of May is the day for flooring installation starting at 7:30am. Looking for a couple of volunteers to assist with removal of the existing carpet flooring and installation of waterproof click flooring on that morning. Please contact the Parish Office if you can assist.

Columbarium Area Works Tewantin - works funded by parishioner donation Seating has been installed and a combination of pots and ground plantings is being sourced for development of this area. The pots and plantings will have a watering system installed and the lighting will be placed on a automatic night switch. Saturday 19th May starting at 7:30am is the day for installation of watering system, potting of pots and planting of ground cover. Please contact the Parish Office if you can assist.

Cleaning of statue of Mary and garden tidy up - Tewantin for Month of May The month of May is a special time for Mary so lets give her statue and the adjoining garden a spruce up! Looking to do the clean up on Friday 4th May starting 10am on that day. Depending on the numbers on deck we can also move onto other parts of the gardens as well. Please contact the Parish Office if you can assist.

St Thomas More gardens - Sunshine Beach. The school has expressed an interest in a joint project with parishioners in working on the gardens in the vicinity of the church - more news on this to follow.

St Patricks Pomona - car park works A date will be scheduled in June for some minor repairs to carpark edging and some trimming. More details in a future bulletin.
