At the time of writing this it is already week 6! Our start has continued to progress smoothly and I am happy to say we now have a stable leadership structure in place for the remainder of the year. In the R-6 sub school, Natalie Carling will be the R-6 Head of Sub-School for the remainder of the year and Desi Philippou will remain in the role of R-6 Senior Leader. Bec Siney will continue as Resource Centre Manager/Cross Disciplinary Studies Coordinator while Desi is working in the R-6 sub school. Kim Copeland will continue for 2016 as the R-6 Student Counsellor and Carlee Decelis remains as the R-6 Special Education and Intervention Support Coordinator. In the middle school, Sandrine Poissonnier will continue as the Middle School Senior Leader while Mari Terreri is still on secondment to DECD central office. Ben Wallis will continue as the HASS and Student Voice Coordinator. In the senior school, Bob Phoumirath will continue as the VET Coordinator for the remainder of 2016 as Shamus Schutt has resigned to take up a permanent position with the MFS. Ben Muggleton will be the Technology Coordinator for the rest of 2016. Over the course of the last few years our enrolments have continued to grow and we are now just a little under 1400. While this brings a number of clear advantages in terms of the capacity to offer a range of specialist curriculum options and learning experiences, it also brings a few challenges, particularly in area of parking and traffic flow during drop off and pick up times. I have met with a representative from the Salisbury Council to discuss options for improved traffic flow to reduce congestion, the provision of additional parking and possibly a "kiss and drop" zone. We are also conducting a survey of student pedestrian traffic around the school to establish if the school crossings are in the most effective locations and also to determine if we need to build additional ones. All of this is going to take time, so in the meantime the Council is asking that parents are considerate of others and follow the appropriate parking and speed restrictions around our school. Following my article are 2 information sheets available from the Salisbury Council website that provide information about parking around schools. Each year schools are entitled to a number of student free days to allow staff to engage in professional learning activities as a collegial group. The Governing Council has endorsed the following dates as student free days for Paralowie; Tuesday 29 March 2016 Friday 10 June 2016 Monday 25 July 2016 Friday 2 September 2016 Monday 5 September 2016 is our school closure day and so there will not be any staff or services available on that day. Chloe Bubner’s outstanding narrative is a fantastic example ofstudent work. She thoroughly edited her work to improve herdescription and focused on internal conflict. Well done Chloe!

It was a day where teachers and students worked together toproblem solve challenges.

They worked in teams to come up with the best solution andthis process gave everyone the opportunity to develop betterrelationships with their peers and teachers while building theircommunication skills.

Students were challenged to think about, how might learningbe different if they were developing 21st century learning skillsas they learn in their subjects?

The challenges set for the school teams duringthe workshop on the day were:

Our students really enjoyed their challenges

‘The challenges made me realise that having the ability to havefun and perform science practicals will leave students/myselffeeling very happy and mature.’ – Gareth Bailey

‘Participating in class pracs would help develop 21st centurylearning in students as they are able to experience whathappens instead of reading the information’. – Cameron terHorst

‘Many students may at first feel shy or uncomfortable to join inwith others at firsts, but this changes”’- Chloe Schubert.

By Esterina Taban

Students from Years 4-7 attended SAPSASA Beach Volleyballat Glenelg. We were allocated into teams - Years 4 and 5 weretogether, and Years 6 and 7 were together. In our teams weplayed against teams from other schools.

Paralowie was lucky enough to bring home two silver medals -the year 6/7 boys team and a year 7 girls team.

We were very proud of them!

• How can we create outstanding learners who canthink?

• Creating a rocket to launch an egg into the air andhave it land on the return unbroken.

• Building the tallest tower from 40 sticks of spaghettiand balance a marshmallow.

• Connecting straws to make the longest andstrongest line, then raising and lowering it togetherwith all members in the team holding on to the strawstructure.

SECRET GARDENOnce again this year all our Year 1 to year 6 students were luckyenough to visit the wonderful Secret Garden in Salisbury as partof the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

This happened on Tuesday the 23rd of February on a warmday. Our students though were commended by the City ofSalisbury Council staff for being very well behaved and politedespite the conditions.

They had a wonderful time seeing a performance, having lunchon the lawn and then participating in the activities on offer in theSecret Garden.

The children saw the performance‘Inspector Hector’ which was about ascientist who needed to solve the mysteryof the missing 5 food groups! We were veryimpressed with the children and theirknowledge about healthy eating habits and the understandingof what ‘sometimes foods’ are.

Paralowie R-6 would like to thank the City of Salisbury inconjunction with the OPAL project (Obesity, Prevention andLifestyle) who organised for our students to be part of thisfantastic day!

SPLASH DAY - 2016Splash day is an annual event to celebrate the start of the yearin Middle School. Our Year 7, 8 and 9 classes spent the dayat Salisbury Swimming centre involved in a number of activities. These activities are designed to create team spirit and classcollegiately.

This year was our best Splash Day EVER! Students participatedin many activities including ping pong scramble, the inflatableobstacle, the air mattress relay and the highlight of the day wasthe BIG splash!

Classes in each year level strove to be the best at the activitieswith their enthusiastic participation. However, there can onlybe one winner in each year level. This year they were; 7HGA(Ms Jewell’s class), 8HGA (Ms Attwood’s class) and 9HGF(Mr Furniss’s class). However, it was clear that students andteachers across each class tried their hardest.

Thanks to Ms Stuart and Ms Higginson and the Year 10 Sportsclass for their hard work at organising the day.
