50 m freestyle (men, S3)Clocking a time of 39.24 sec in the final on 13 Sep, this was the first of four records set by Huang Wenpan (CHN) during Rio 2016. In total, he took home six medals for Team China: five gold and one silver.

50 m freestyle (women, S13)This record was unbroken for 20 years until Anna Stetsenko (UKR) smashed it with a time of 27.34 sec on 14 Sep. She took two further golds in the 100 m freestyle and 100 m backstroke, also in the S13 visual impairment category.

400 m freestyle (men, S8)British swimmer Oliver Hynd shaved 1.87 sec off his own record with a time of 4:21.89 on 8 Sep. During the same event, he also achieved the fastest 200 m freestyle (S8): 2:07.53.

100 m breaststroke (women, SB13)Already with a 200-m record under her belt, Fotimakhon Amilova (UZB) completed this event in a time of 1:12.45 on 11 Sep. As part of the same race, she also set a new mark for the 50 m breaststroke: 33.96 sec.

4 x 100 m freestyle relay – 34 points (women)Team Australia defended their London 2012 title and earned another world record in the process, with a time of 4:16.65. The team comprised Ellie Cole, Maddison Elliott, Ashleigh McConnell and Lakeisha Patterson. Australia earned 81 medals across the Games – 29 of which were from swimming events.

100 m backstroke (men, S5)Sometimes in swimming races, records for shorter distances are set as part of longer events. Although Team Brazil didn’t win in the “4 x 100 m medley relay – 34 points” category on 17 Sep (they came third), Daniel Dias (BRA) did achieve the fastest 100 m backstroke (S5), with a time of 1:16.24. His 24 medals to date make the 28-year-old the most decorated Paralympic male swimmer ever.
