  • SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

  • Solid Waste matter or materials that are resulting from human ,animal and economic activities, and which are disposed because they are hazardous or useless.

  • Types of solid waste

    a. Municipal Solid Wasteconsists of household waste, construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue, and waste from streets.Example:kitchen waste, vegetables, flowers, leaves, fruits, paper and etc.

  • b. Hazardous WasteIndustrial and hospital waste is considered hazardous as they may contain toxic substances.Example:old medicines, paints, spray cans, fertilizer and shoe polish, pesticide containers, batteries.

  • Why Solid Waste Management Exists?

  • CAUSES OF IMPROPER SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

    Population Growth

    Lack of Knowledge

  • Lack of DisciplineRepublic Act (RA) 9003 Ecological Solid Waste Management- it declares the adoption of a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program as a policy of the State. It adopts a community-based approach and it mandates waste diversion through composting and recycling.

  • EFFECTS OF IMPROPER SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Groundwater contamination- nearly ninety-five percent (95%) of all fresh water on Earth is groundwater and over a half of world population relies on groundwater as a source of drinking water.Disease Outbreak- severe diseases like malaria, dengue, and scabies caused by the parasites, mosquitoes and bacteria come from open pits and poor landfill.

  • Air Pollution & Climate Change- when waste materials, especially toxic chemicals are burned, they will release into the surroundings or environment and can cause serious public health risks; as waste begins to breakdown, methane is produced.

  • WAYS TO REDUCE WASTE

Refuse, Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce Resource Recovery- a process by which garbage is converted to useful energy in a solid waste plant.

  • Composting- a process wherein the organic waste is condensed and reused as a fertilizer to the plants.
