Code of Conduct

Alberta Education supports schools that are safe, caring, orderly, positive, productive, respectful and free from the fear of physical and emotional harm. Delia School of Canada supports this vision and holds that DSC must be a safe place for all students and staff. The following Student Code of Conduct was formulated to ensure that the educational environment of the School is conducive to learning, safe, and an environment where all members are treated with dignity and respect.

Scope of Student Responsibilities

Students enrolled in Delia School of Canada may be held responsible and accountable for their behaviour and conduct both on and off campus. This policy extend to:

school-sponsored or related activities on and off campus;

during any recess or lunch break on or off campus;

while traveling to and from campus;

in vehicles used to transport students to and from campus and school-sponsored events;

and; beyond school hours if the behaviour or conduct detrimentally affects the welfare of individual students or the governance, climate, or efficiency of the school

Students must:

respect school authority;

respect the rights of others;

respect ethnic, racial, religious and gender differences;

respect school property and the property of others of the School;

be diligent in their studies and be co-operative with all School staff;

Students must not be involved in such things as fighting, swearing, harassment, smoking, substance abuse, disrespectful behaviour, and property damage.

The School has defined unacceptable behaviour as behaviour is injurious to the physical or mental well-being of others and/or in the opinion of the staff members, teachers, or principal has displayed an attitude that is willful, blatant and repeated refusal to:

be diligent in pursuing studies;

attend school regularly;

programs and other services,(comply with the rules of the school or the school code of conduct, account to the student’s teachers for the student’s conduct, respect the rights of others.)

Some examples of unacceptable behaviour:

possession of or active contact with a weapon (on person, in locker);

threatens or intimidates others;

encouraging conduct, which endangers others;

encouraging unacceptable conduct;

use or display of improper, obscene or abusive language;

distribution or display of offensive messages or pictures;

theft;

assault;

Page 7: Parent and Student Handbook - Weebly

6

willful damage to school or others’ property;

use, possession of, distribution of, or active contact with drugs, alcohol or inhalants;

attending school under the influence of drugs, alcohol or inhalants;

personal or sexual harassment;

hazing or initiation activities;

extortion;

disruptive behaviour, willful disobedience or defiance of authority;

interfering with the orderly conduct of classes of the school;

tampering with the fire alarms and safety equipment;

criminal activity and Contravention of the school code of conduct.

Progressive School Discipline Plan

The School’s Progressive Discipline Plan is implemented when student behaviour or actions come into conflict with the rights of others or themselves. School’s Progressive Discipline Plan was designed as a mechanism to support and encourage positive behaviour in line with the School Code of Conduct. As such, the policy supports positive behaviour rather than relying solely on a model of action and consequences. Building and sustaining a positive school climate is a complex and challenging task. All staff members play a vital and important role in the establishment of this positive climate. Addressing inappropriate behaviours immediately helps to maintain a positive school climate.

Discipline is seen as the change from unacceptable conduct to acceptable behaviour. At all times staff members use their professional judgment when applying consequences.

Major discipline issues, those that adversely affect the student and others in the School community, are dealt with by the Head Teacher in consultation with the Deputy Principal and/or the Principal.

The Vice Principal will seek the approval of the Principal for suspensions and expulsions. The Principal approves all suspensions and expulsions. In dealing with student discipline, any written documentation will be handled in accordance with the Data Privacy Ordinance. All data maintained will be made available to the student and or his parent(s)/guardians if requested. Refer to the Student Data Retention Section of this document.

Consequences may include, but are not limited to:

informal conferences

risk assessment

restriction of privileges

parent conferences

in-school suspensions

removal for overseas Experiential Learning Week programs

suspension / expulsion

involvement of external services and supports

Page 8: Parent and Student Handbook - Weebly

7

Certain behaviours will result in an escalation of consequences that overlook some of the steps in the Progressive Discipline Policy. The following are examples of serious topics of concern with regard to student conduct in schools:

defiance and disrespect;

open opposition to authority;

bullying, including cyber-bullying;

internet safety;

physical harm/assault;

personal and/or sexual harassment;

gang activity;

weapons in schools;

drug and alcohol use by students;

student dress;

use of cellular phones;

student conduct on buses.

Academic Responsibility

Learning is an active process. The teachers provide learning opportunities and support in the classroom, and extra help after school if required.

Students take advantage of these learning opportunities by:

● attending school daily; ● participating in class activities to the best of their abilities in every subject every day; ● asking questions and seeking assistance when needed; ● trying their best all the time; ● checking the learning platform daily; ● participating in on-line, teacher assigned chats on the learning platform; ● completing to the best of their abilities all assignments including homework on time.

Parents and guardians support student learning by:

● supervising homework; ● maintaining open communication with their child’s teacher(s); ● discussing concerns with their child’s teacher(s); ● attending Student Success Conferences.

Students who plagiarize and/or cheat on tests or assignments will be asked, under the teacher’s supervision after school, to re-do the assignment. The assignment then will be re-evaluated. However, parents and School Administration will be informed of incidents involving cheating and plagiarism and the steps taken by the teacher to address the plagiarism. Repeated plagiarism will result in consequences including a parent meeting and possible suspension. The same applies to students who repeatedly cheat on tests.

Access to Campus

In order to provide a safe and secure school environment, Delia School of Canada has a closed campus. We

do not allow people to freely access the building. Guest, including parents and guardians, must sign in at

the main entrance.

Parents and Guardian Access to Campus

Parents and guardians are allowed access to the campus after School without signing in at security.

However, between 8:00 and 3:00 all visitors must sign-in and out at the Security Desk at the Main Entrance

of the School. The Security team will record the individual’s name, date, time, student name and

grade/class, and the first 4 digits of the HKID.

Parent, guardians and siblings are permitted to remain on the courtyard until the end of Extracurricular

Activities.

Forgotten Items

If a student has forgotten an item at home, the item can be taken to the school office. The person

delivering the item must sign in at the security desk in the main lobby. The office staff will ensure the item

gets to the student.

Lunches

Students should come to school with their lunch.

Access to the Campus – Temperature Checks During an Outbreak

During a campus-wide outbreak or Hong Kong wide outbreak of a communicable disease, all individuals

seeking entrance to the School Campus will be subject to a temperature check. Individuals with a fever

will not be allowed to remain on campus. Security Guards, with the assistance of pre-assigned clerical

staff, will screen all individuals (Student, Staff, Family Members, Guests, Sports Teams, etc.) entering the

campus and prevent entry to individuals that have a fever. During a localized or class outbreak a member

of the health room staff will visit the affected classroom and take the temperature of all the students.

Students with a fever will not be allowed to remain on campus.

Attendance Policy

Punctuality and regular attendance are essential components of student success. Students with frequent absence miss vital elements of the program of study. For example, a student who misses 25% of instructional time over four years misses an entire year of instruction.

Repeated/frequent absences result in assessment and evaluation become more challenging for students. As such, Delia School of Canada has implemented an attendance policy as a means of both tracking attendance and identifying students who might benefit from a meeting between the Head Teacher, Parent and Student. Once a student misses 15 days of instruction a meeting will be setup with the Head Teacher, Parents and Student. Any student who misses 20% of instructional time will receive an attendance letter from the school.

Attendance Procedures – Parental and Student Policy

All students are required to attend school regularly. Consistent attendance is an essential component of student success. Absences are difficult for the child because, while missing lessons can be "caught-up", the context is often lost.

If your child is absent from the school please contact the school by telephone between 8:00 and 9:30 am. To notify the school of the absence and indicate the reason. On the next day back, please send a note to school indicating the reason for the absence. This note will be maintained in the student’s school record for the school year. Repeated absences will result in a meeting between the Head Teacher, Parents and Student.

Attendance Procedures –

Attendance is taken once a day between 8:20am and 8:30am by using Maplewood ConnectEd in the teacher’s classroom. The Office staff will telephone parents or guardians of all students who are absent, unless a note/email was already send to the school.

Attendance records are kept up-to-date on a daily basis. The student computer files maintain a cumulative total of both ‘lates’ and ‘absences’. These files are used to indicate absences and lates on Report Cards.

Letters and E-mails of Excuse

Parent are asked to send into the office ([email protected]) notices or letters when a student is taking a planned sick leave or will not be in school.

Early Leave

A student wishing to leave the School before dismissal at the end of the school day is required to have parental permission. The student will report to the Office, hand in a parent letter requesting early leave, and sign out at the Office. A member of the clerical staff will provide the student with an Early Leave Authorization Form which the student then must present to Security in order to exit the building. Students who attempt to leave without the Early Leave Authorization Form will be sent back to the Office to sign out and get the required form

Sick Leave – Ill student at school

A student who is ill will be sent to the Health Room by the Homeroom or supervising teacher. The Health Room Supervisor will assess the situation and either send the student back to class or contact the parents or guardians and then sign the student out using the Early Leave Authorization Form.

Page 11: Parent and Student Handbook - Weebly

10

Extended Leave

A student is considered to be on an extended leave if he or she misses five or more consecutive days of school because of a family trip, an illness, or an accident.

When a student is absent, classes and lessons continue. The learning of others will not be affected. The lessons missed will not be re-taught. The assessment(s) given during the absence will not be reassigned upon the student’s return. This is because of the interactive, on-going participation-based learning and assessing that is characteristic of our programs. Homework packages will not be prepared in advance by the classroom teacher.

Families are asked to reflect on the effects of the missed class time before making arrangements for extended leave. Whenever possible, the school office ([email protected]) should be notified in advance.

Awards & Recognition

Student of the Month

Students who have made outstanding contributions to the School are named Student of the Month. These

students are selected by homeroom teachers and program teachers based on the students contributions to

the school community. The contribution should be noted on the poster.

A poster is designed by the teacher and posted on the Bulletin Board outside the office until the next group

of selected students. Students also receive special recognition on the School’s Facebook page.

Students also receive a Student of the Month certificate and a $150 gift certificate for books.

Grade 6 Graduation Awards

The Grade 6 students are presented with a number of awards at the graduation ceremony. The recipients

of these awards are chosen by the teachers who teach the grade 6 students.

Admissions Policy and Grade Placement Policy

Parents must complete an application package that includes academic and residency documentation. When

all documents have been submitted to the school, the student applicant and parents or guardians will be

invited to attend an interview to discuss the child’s placement.

Delia School of Canada strictly adheres to the guidelines of the year of birth-grade placement policy. Age

appropriate grade level placement is strictly enforced.

Students who are in need of English instruction are supported with After School Programs. These programs

are optional and they will be recommended if the student does not have the necessary English proficiency

to complete the course requirements of the grade level.

When a class is full, students will be placed on a wait list. Delia School of Canada is committed to maintaining

small class sizes. Average class sizes range from 10-18 students depending on the grade.

Anti-Virus Policy

All users of BYOD technology on campus are required to have an anti-virus program with up-to-date virus

definitions.

The School’s Anti-Virus Policy is aimed at reducing the risks of viruses spreading within the system. This policy

applies to all users of School equipment. This policy contains a number of guidelines that should be followed.

It is the responsibility of all users of the School’s computer systems to take reasonable measures to protect

the network and computer system from virus infections.

Page 13: Parent and Student Handbook - Weebly

12

Anti-bullying

Delia School of Canada is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment free from all forms

of bullying or intimidation. As such the School supports Alberta Education’s Plan for promoting healthy

relationships and preventing bullying.

This new plan shines a light on the importance of building and maintaining healthy relationships. It draws

upon people’s inherent capacity and desire to be part of a positive and respectful culture. The focus of this

plan is to encourage all students to interact kindly and respectfully with each other, and influence broader

societal changes through focused strategies and priorities to create positive and respectful cultures. Bullying

issues will be addressed through the development of healthy relationships.

The concepts, strategic directions and priorities were developed through research and community

engagement. There are five priorities in this plan:

1. Enhance public awareness and education.

2. Support increased opportunities for collaboration and knowledge networks.

3. Support welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments.

4. Promote healthy and safe workplace cultures.

5. Establish evaluation and accountability measures.

For more information on preventing bullying please refer to:

Certified School Documents

Parents can request Certified School Documents by completing the “Request Form for Certified School

Documents” available from the Alberta Office. These documents include Letter of Attendance, Leaving

Certificate, and Copy of Certified Report Card. Requests should be made at least one month in advance of

the date the documents are required.

Change of Address, Phone Number, or Email Address

Parents and Guardians are asked to inform the Office when they have a change of address, telephone

number and/or their parents have a change in email address. The student, or parent or guardian, may inform

the Office in person, by telephone, by fax, with a written note, or via email. In this way, the School is able to

maintain an up-to-date record in the student files. This is particularly important in the event of an emergency

situation whereby communication with parents or guardians is necessary. In addition, school information is

sent home by post.

Communication — School and Home

The School, the parents, and the student form a partnership that plays a vital role in nurturing the student’s

success at school. Therefore, communication between the School and home is very important. Parents are

encouraged to maintain an on-going dialogue with the School. Parents can communicate with teachers

directly through formal and informal scheduled meetings, via email or notes, and/or by telephone.

Teacher email addresses can be found on the School’s website.

Parents are asked to contact the classroom teacher to discuss any concerns. If, after communicating with

the classroom teacher, the concern has not been resolved, the parents are invited to contact the Head

Teacher who then will address the concern and, where appropriate, refer the concern to the Deputy

Principal.

School Assemblies

School Assemblies will be held during the school year. The dates can be found on the school calendar.

Assemblies will be used to showcase learning, celebrate success, and communicate information about up

come events. Parents and Guardians will be invited to join the assemblies.

CCTV

The School has installed several CCTV cameras on Campus. The purpose of the CCTV system is to provide

security and safety on Campus during the day, evening and night, and to assist with an investigation into a

security issue or suspected violation of the School’s Code of Conduct. The collection, retrieval and copying

or saving of images are handled in accordance with the School’s Personal Data Collection Policy and the

guidelines of the “Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data” and the “Personal Data (Privacy)

ordinance (Cap. 486)”.

Community Chest Dress Casual Days

One way of encouraging civic awareness is through participation in activities that benefit the larger

community. In the Elementary Section, participation in Community Chest Dress Casual Days is one such

activity. Community Chest is an organization in Hong Kong supporting those in Hong Kong who are in need.

Delia School of Canada supports Community Chest by donating all money collected through fund-raising

activities to Community Chest.

On these days, students do not have to dress in school uniform. Students may dress in neat and tidy casual

wear appropriate for school and school activities on that day. Students who have Physical Education

scheduled on their timetable on these days must choose clothing and shoes appropriate for active

participation in PE activities.

A minimum donation of HK$20 for Community Chest is collected from those students participating in Dress

Casual Day. All money collected is donated to Community Chest.

Experiential Learning Week themes: leadership skills and collaboration, enhancing cultural awareness,

community involvement through service projects, enriching creativity, and adventure and sports. By

parents and pupils at all times and ensure their conduct would not bring the School into disrepute. Below

are a few of the codes that set out the School’s policy on the acceptance of advantages by staff.

The school does not encourage families to provide gifts to staff members from students and

parents/guardians. However, it has been our experience that Elementary School students often provide gifts

Homework

The Role of Homework at Delia School of Canada (Alberta Program), homework is not considered new

learning but rather the completion or reinforcement of material already learned during class time.

Homework is meant to help support your child’s learning; reinforce what your child learned in school; and

give your child more practice.

We believe:

We strongly believe that daily home reading practice supports all learning.

We strongly believe that daily practice of math skills supports student learning.

If homework is assigned, activities provide practice and reinforcement of concepts taught in class.

It is our expectation that each student will arrive for school prepared to succeed. This includes

being prepared with the necessary materials and having assignments completed. While many of the

students complete their work during class time, some work may be assigned for completion at

home. Students in grades 3 to 6 will find homework is assigned on a more regular basis than grades

1 to 3.

In addition to work assigned by teachers, here are some other examples of work students can do at home

to support their learning at school:

• read every day;

• listen to someone else read aloud;

• watch the news on television (particularly important for students in grades 4 to 6);

• study spelling words;

• keep a daily journal;

• make a scrapbook about a favorite topic;

• practice basic math facts;

• study an atlas or world map;

• collect factual information about topics learned at school;

• review notes and assignments to refresh your memory;

• read ahead in your textbooks.

Temperature Scanners

In order to maintain an environment that is safe from communicable diseases, everyone who enters the

School Campus may be subject to a temperature check. Individuals with a fever will not be allowed on

campus or to stay at school.

During peak flu season or if there is an outbreak, thermal temperature scanners will be used. These will be

monitored by Security Guards for the sole purpose of identifying those individuals who can enter the Campus

and those who need to see a member of the Health Team for a temperature check. Video imaging is not

recorded nor any permanent data stored or collected by the school.
