Verse 1

As the world takes a turn

A new era has just begun

Holding hands we sing the song of

Strength and determination.

PRE-CHORUS

Hold your head high with strength

No matter what faith you hold

Win in life's every race

Devote our lives to righteousness.

CHORUS

We'll break every barrier

We'll break every wall

Stand by humanity

Standforoneandall

AKADEMIA we are standing tall.

Verse 2

Through each and every dusk or dawn

Or each and every day

Through each and every road you see

Or each and every way

We will reach our destiny

Succeed in every way

Sow peace and harmony

And make a brand new day.

Mission Statement

GEMS Akademia International School will provide its students with a holistic education, imparted by caring and dedicated faculty members in a contemporary learning environment, by focusing on developing the cognitive, emotional, social, physical, creative and spiritual potential of every child.

Our Vision

To make our students well-rounded and independent individuals, by inculcating in them a passion for life-long learning, compassion and respect for others, and a set of requisite skills and qualities, so that they can make a positive contribution to society.

The School Motto

The School's motto, "Ingenio et Labore", is an accurate reflection of the learning process at GEMS Akademia International School. A Latin phrase, it means 'by natural ability and hard work'.Students at GEMS Akademia International School will learn to recognize and respect their natural abilities, and will nurture them to reach their maximum potential. By working hard, they will also strive to step out of their comfort zone and continuously acquire new knowledge.

The School Emblem

The word Akademia has its origins in ancient Greek mythology, with a long and illustrious history. The Akademia contained a sacred grove of olive trees, dedicated to Athena (the Greek goddess of wisdom and skills), outside the city walls of ancient Athens. The site of the Akademia was considered holy by Athena and sheltered her religious cult.

Centuries later, Plato, the classical Greek philosopher, founded a school with the name 'Akademia', where Aristotle studied for twenty years.

Page 5: parent handbook 2 - akademia.gemsindia.co.inakademia.gemsindia.co.in/ParentHandbook.pdf · The School's motto, "Ingenio et Labore", is an accurate reflection of the learning process

The GEMS Akademia International School Logo exemplifies the School's vision, mission and motto. It reiterates our belief that every child is different, and deserves a supportive environment where he/she cangrow into a well-rounded individual. The logo's design is inspired by that of a 'prism' — a transparent optical with flat, polished surfaces, used to refract or split light. In a prism, a ray of white light entering from one side is broken up into its constituent spectrum of colours, before exiting the prism from another side. If light inside the prism hits one of the surfaces at a steep angle, all the light is reflected internally, giving the prism a mirror-like quality.GEMS Akademia International School will act as a prism and mirror for its students. On the surface, every child entering the School might appear similar, but our focus will be on nurturing the uniqueness of every individual, on seeking out their constituent colours... students' talents, interests and passion – all the things that come together to define their individuality. Every child will leave School having explored the various facets of his/her inner potential to the fullest.

Our Ethos

The school respects life in all its forms, and the careful nurture of the environment. All are requested to respect the requirement of maintaining GEMS Akademia International School as a vegetarian campus and refrain from eating or bringing any food items in violation of this code.

ACADEMIC STRUCTURE

The School is divided into 4 sections.

1. Pre Primary School : Grades Nursery to K.G. II2. Primary School : Grades 1 to 53. Middle School : Grades 6 to 84. High School : Grades 9 & 10

Each section is managed by their respective Coord in ators, ably supported by the Principal and the Administration Team.

Heads of Departments ensure that the Curriculum framework is in place and followed across all the classes. Parents are free to contact the Coordinators or Principal using the details given in the School Diary.

ACADEMIC CURRICULUM Pre-Primary

Nursery and Kindergarten provide a joyful environment for Pre-Primary learning. In our specially designed Playschool section, children participate in a variety of activities according to the GEMS Playschool Curriculum.

Through a carefully directed programme of play, children acquire experience and knowledge of language, early math concepts, with basic sensorial and EPL skills. Emphasis is laid primarily on the development of gross and fine motor skills, effective hand and eye co- ordination, along with the development of social behaviour in a carefully designed child friendly environment. Our teachers are trained to observe and record the children's development and work closely with their parents in understanding each child.

The children learn at their own pace as play continues to be the medium of learning and knowledge of the enviroment comes with the child's language development.

12

Page 14: parent handbook 2 - akademia.gemsindia.co.inakademia.gemsindia.co.in/ParentHandbook.pdf · The School's motto, "Ingenio et Labore", is an accurate reflection of the learning process

A meticulously framed "learn as you play and play while you learn" curriculum has been designed for the pre-schoolers. Our Kindergarten is based on three main principles:

1. Fostering all-round development of the children.2. Making the learning process meaningful and joyous.3. Setting a strong foundation for future learning.

In our school environment children will have easy access to activities and material which will stimulate their natural instincts and facilitate self learning aswellas peer learning. Under the supervision of trained teachers, they will imbibe the qualities of self discipline and self help.

A wide range of skills is developed that would equip a child with the learning necessary to cope with the requirements in Grade - I.

Grades I to V(Primary)

The Primary School at GEMS Akademia covers a period of five years wherein the scope and depth of learning increases gradually, while opportunities for play and creative expression continue to complement learning. The emphasis is on observation, inquiry and discovery. Children use technology as a tool for enhancing communicationopportunities.

Care is taken by teachers to ensure whole class learning, and the purpose of assessment is to understand the quality of the students' understanding. There is a broadening of the curriculum in Grades 4 and 5 as well as an increase in cognitive challenge.

A carefully designed in-house curriculum will be followed, adopting features of national and international programmes. Students will be fully prepared to deal with the requirements of Middle School. Over and above the standard academic and co-curricular activities, emphasis will begiven toInquiry andExperential learning. Innovative teaching styles will be used and practical approach learning will complement traditional methodsof knowledge building.

13

Page 15: parent handbook 2 - akademia.gemsindia.co.inakademia.gemsindia.co.in/ParentHandbook.pdf · The School's motto, "Ingenio et Labore", is an accurate reflection of the learning process

Grades VI to VIII (Middle School)

In the Middle School Years self-reliance becomes an important aim in learning. Attention is given to the requisite level in each subject by defining attainment standards. Collaborative learning is a regular feature at this stage, as children learn to work together, as well as independently. Children learn to set goals and have long term objectives.

The co-curricular programme provides each child an opportunity to engage in creative and constructive pursuits. Sports and hobbies play a role in drawing out talent and developing positive attributes like discipline, respect and team playing.

Grade 9-10 : Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) GEMS Akademia International School is affiliated to the CISCE, Code - WB352

CISCE was established in 1958 by the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate. The curriculum is designed in accordance with the Council's requirements and emphasizes a broad range of subject areas. Students are required to sit for external sets of examinations in Grades 10 and 12.

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination has been designed to provide a set of examinations for students in Grade 10 in a course of general education. All candidates are required to sit for examinations in seven subjects.

The Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination is taken by students in Grade 12 after a two year course of studies in their specific area of interest. Candidates are required to sit for examinations in five/six subjects.

EXAMINATION & ASSESSMENT

There are no formal examinations till Grade II. Evaluation of the child's progress will be a comprehensive and continuous one, taking into consideration the child's performance in the classroom, his/her social and personal skills and the learning objectives that he/she is able to meet. Importance will be given to participation in co- curricular activities, punctuality and conduct in school.

The structure and content of internal examinations of the school are based on the requirements of the school syllabus for any particular subject and the board examinations at the respective stages.

A performance based curriculum requires continuous monitoring of the pupils achievement through a variety of tasks. Pupils advance to the next higher Grade only when they have achieved the established performance outcomes stated in terms of content and standards in the curriculum. The academic session will be divided into two terms and parents will receive the Report Cards of their wards at the end of each term.

Report Cards will be withheld until all dues are cleared.

The reporting system is designed to give such information on a regular and systematic basis; however the school is also committed to informing parents immediately if problems arise. A Parent can discuss his/her child's progress with all of the student's teachers at the relevant Parents’ Meeting. They can also fix an appointment with the required Teacher through the coordinator's e-mail id given in the School Almanac.
