Message from the Administration Team

This Fall we are once again looking forward to our Arborgate family! We would like to welcome back

everyone who is returning and a huge welcome to our new students and staff! You will notice a change

in our administrative team - we have a new Early Year’s Vice-Principal, Nichole Borkowsky and also a

new Principal, Sandra Meilleur. Welcome back Randy Engel, who will continue to be our Middle

Year’s Vice-Principal.

As we move forward this year, we will continue with many current divisional and school-based

initiatives, however because we are always learning from new research and data these initiatives

evolve. We are excited to see all of the learning that takes place this year!

As partners in your child(ren)’s learning, if there is anything else we can do help support their learning

at home please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to work together to build positive learning

environments for our children.

A Secretary is available for phone calls from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you need to contact the office and

are unable to call during office hours, you may leave a message, send an email, fax the school, or send a

note with your child.

Student Absenteeism/Late Arrival If your child will be absent from school, please call the secretary at 204-424-5607, or email

arb@srsd.ca prior to 9:20 am. You may also send a note with a sibling (please ensure the sibling

brings the note to the office). If you do not inform us of an absence, we must call you to ensure that

your child is supposed to be absent. Your call will save us the time and worry that your child may be

stranded at home after having missed the bus, or some other reason.

If your child is a bus student, you must call the Transportation Dept. (see above), so that the bus will

not be waiting to pick up a child who is not going to school.

Your child will be considered late if he/she arrives after 8:45 a.m. or 12:40 p.m. If your child arrives

late to school, he/she must report to the office for a late slip, as the teachers have already taken

attendance. If your child does not report to the office, the attendance will not be changed, and we will

be calling home to verify an absence for a student who has arrived late. Students arriving during the

lunch hour are considered absent for the morning, and do not require a late slip.

Parents Who Pick Up Their Children

Please remember:

Park on Normandeau Bay

Please do not park or stop in the bus loading zone in the front of the school between 8:00 a.m. and

9:00 a.m. and between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Parents must report to the office, and wait for their children in the Arborgate Atrium.

The parking lot is reserved for staff and daycare drop off only.

It is illegal to pass a bus that has stopped to load or unload students. This also applies to the buses

parked in the loading/unloading zone at the end of the day.

Sign out your child whenever you are picking them up. Only town students do not need to be signed

out.

Note: If your children regularly travel on the bus, and you will be picking them up, please call the

school before 2:30 pm, so that we will be able to inform your children of the change.

Arborgate School timetable is based on a six-day cycle following the school cycle as

announced on local radio stations and television.

Classroom Selection

Arborgate School has single and/or multiple classes for each grade level. As the teachers

have the knowledge in how students function within the school environment, the school

reserves the right to determine all student classroom selections. At the end of each year,

teachers meet to discuss student progress and determine class placement for the upcoming

year. Placement decisions are made based on academic and emotional development.

School Phones

To avoid disruption of classroom instruction, students will be allowed to use the school

phones during non-class times and during emergency situations. We will be happy to

pass a message on to students but we ask that interruptions during class times be

restricted to emergency situations only. Whenever possible, parents are requested to convey personal

messages to their children prior to the children leaving for school in the morning.

The use of cell phones by students is prohibited at school and on the bus. Inappropriate use of cell

phones will result in the phone being confiscated, and may require parental pickup.

No Smoking Policy

Arborgate School is a smoke free environment as mandated by our school board. This

includes the school, playground, field, and parking lot.

Student Dress

Students’ appearance and dress is expected to be in accordance with modesty and self-respect. Students

are free to wear clothing of their choice, provided that it is neat and modest, and in line with the

school’s philosophy. By modesty, we mean that clothing must not be so brief or close fitting as to call

attention. Shorts and skirts must reach mid-thigh. Loose pants or low cut tops that show off underwear

are not allowed. Tops should be long enough, and waistbands high enough to cover the midriff. Tops

must be at least 3-finger widths at the shoulder. Current fashions will be evaluated as to which ones

concur, or do not concur with the school’s philosophy. Additional general guidelines will be given as

the need arises.

All students must keep one pair of indoor running shoes at the school to change into upon arrival.

The school reserves the right to comment upon, and require changes in any manner of dress that is not

deemed appropriate. Students wearing T-shirts with inappropriate messages or pictures will be asked to

change, or turn their T-shirts inside out.

Caps, hats, and bandanas should not be worn in the school at any time.

Bicycles, Skateboards, Scooters and Rollerblades

All students are expected to walk their bicycles when on school property. Bicycles

must be locked and stored in the racks provided. The school does NOT assume

responsibility for lost or stolen bicycles.

Skateboards, scooters, and rollerblades should not be brought to school, or used on school

property.

Personal Property

Parents are requested to see that their children’s clothes, boots, gloves, scarves, running shoes, lunch

kits, etc. are marked with the child’s name. Clothing does get misplaced, and many children have

similar or identical clothing. If a child has lost or misplaced an article of clothing, there is a good

chance it will be in the Lost and Found box. Children should look in this box; parents are also

encouraged to come to the school and look for lost items. Every year, many excellent articles of

clothing are left behind. Found items will be put on tables for parents to look through during Student-

led conferences and at the Year-end Awards assembly. Any items not claimed will be donated to

charitable organizations.

MP3s/IPODs/video games and other electronic toys are not permitted in the school.

Inappropriate use will result in the item being confiscated. Confiscated items may require

parental pickup.

Recess

All students in grades K-8 are required to go outside for recess. We will not send children out during

severe weather (rainstorm or temperature of -27° C or colder,), but please ensure that your child is

always dressed appropriately (including footwear) for the weather conditions.

Drills

Fire Drills are held on a monthly basis to ensure that the school can be evacuated in an

orderly, panic-free manner in case of emergency. The wearing of indoor shoes is

mandatory, since fire drills are unannounced and every person must leave the building

when the fire alarm sounds.

Lock Down Drills are held twice per year, and Tornado Drills are held once per year. This is to ensure

the safety and protection of our students and staff in case of an emergency in the building or on site.

Once per year we are also required to practice moving to our alternate place of safety (the arena).

Students Leaving School Grounds Except for those who live in town and go home for lunch, students are not permitted to leave the

school grounds during the day.

Only when it is an absolute necessity should children bring notes from parents asking that we allow a

child to leave the school grounds.

Lunch at School

Students who stay for lunch are expected to follow lunch rules in order to

create a pleasant and safe lunch atmosphere. Failure to comply with lunch

rules may result in suspension of the privilege of eating at school.

Microwaves are available for student use. Please provide cutlery and

microwaveable containers for your child, as these will not be available at the

school. Please note that microwave use is a privilege. Any student abusing

that privilege may have their microwave privileges removed.

Medication/Student Illness

At times, students may require medication during school hours. Personnel in our school may not

administer any medication without the written consent of parents and the authorization of the child’s

physician. Forms are available through the office for those students requiring medication at school.

No medication is to be sent on the bus. It must be brought to the office in the original container.

You can ask the pharmacy to dispense medication in two containers, so as to have one at home, and one

at school.

We do not have a school nurse to assist children who are ill. Whenever a child becomes ill, we will

telephone home to request that someone pick him/her up. We therefore require an emergency contact

number in case no one is available at home.

Lice Policy

Should a child be diagnosed or information received about head lice, the following actions should

occur:

Attendance at School

Head lice infestations have generally been present for several weeks before they are noticed. As

children found to have head lice at school or day care have likely attended for days or weeks before

detention, there is no benefit in sending them home early; they may go home at the end of the day.

Immediate exclusion and/or isolation are not necessary. Children may return to school or day care

after treatment with an effective product. Entire classrooms or groups will not be checked.

There is general consensus the “no-nit” policies (requiring a child to be free of nits before returning to

school or day care) are unnecessary for the following reasons:

Many nits are more than7 mm from the scalp. Such nits are usually not viable and very unlikely

to hatch to become crawling lice or may in fact be empty shells;

Nits are cemented to hair shafts and are very unlikely to be transferred successfully to other

people;

The burden of unnecessary absenteeism to the students, families and communities far outweighs

the risks associated with head lice;

Misdiagnosis of nits is very common during nit checks conducted by non-medical personnel.

Families with continuing or recurring infection with head lice will be assisted and supported by the

school and health professionals.

Returning to School Exclusion for 24 hours after treatment is not required Students will be checked when returning to school. This is NOT to exclude children but to check so

that we can assist parents in continuing the cleanup should nits still be evident. Recommendations

for treatment are available through the office.

Letters Home

Letters will be sent home with classrooms that have confirmed cases of lice. This is to inform parents

to check their children to reduce the spread of lice. Entire classrooms or groups will not be checked.

We will not be sending home letters for buses.

Transportation

Eligibility and Conduct

Please see attached Bus Ridership Policy and Bus Code of Conduct.

Change of Bus for Students

Except for emergency situations, parents are requested to provide the Transportation Department a

minimum of 24 hours notice for a requested change to a scheduled pick up or drop off of a transported

student. Bus drivers are not authorized to change routes, or locations of drop-off or pick-up. If your

child will be going to the home of another student, the other student’s parent must also send a note to

the school to verify the change. Exceptions will be made for emergency babysitting situations for K-4

students only.

Change of transportation will be provided for babysitting purposes or school projects only – not for

sleepovers, birthday parties, etc.

If there will be a long-term change of bus, parents will need to fill out a new transportation request form

at the school office.

Note: Students who walk to school may not take a school bus to a friend’s house, as only bus

students are insured for transportation to and from school on the bus. If your child walks to

school and needs to go to a babysitter’s on the bus, you MUST fill out a transportation request.

Homework Policy

The amount of homework depends on a number of factors: how fast a student completes his work in

class, the teacher's expectations, and the needs of each individual student. All students should practice

at home such basic skills as reading and writing. It should be stressed that students can minimize their

amount of homework time by making good use of class time.

Music (Grades K-6), and Band (Grades 7-8)

The intention of music and band is to develop programs that enable students to acquire skills and

nurture an appreciation of the arts.

All students in grade 7 & 8 participate in Band Classes. These classes are

held at Arborgate School.

Textbooks

All textbooks handed out by the school are stamped with the school division stamp and their condition

is recorded at the beginning of the year. Textbooks are evaluated again at the end of the year to

determine if they have been abused. Students who lose or abuse their books will be held financially

responsible. The principal will determine the amount to be paid, and an invoice will be sent home.

Library

All students have regular library periods. Books must be returned or renewed at

the next library class. Although we do not assess fines for overdue books, we ask

that you ensure that your child does return books promptly. The student signing

out the book is responsible for returning it – students are not to lend their

Library Books to other students. Students who do not return their books on time

may have their library privileges suspended. Note: Students will be charged for

books that are lost or damaged.

Damage to School Property by Pupils

Pupils shall be held responsible for damage to school or school bus property resulting from wilfulness

or neglect on the part of the pupil.

It is the responsibility of the principal to investigate such damages and to decide where the claim shall

be laid. Claims to parents may be laid by the principal, Secretary/Treasurer of the School Board, or the

Transportation Supervisor.

Student Accident Insurance

The company endorsed by our School Division is Old Republic Insurance Group. They offer a plan in

which your child is covered twenty-four hours a day. Coverage is recommended for all students. If

interested, please fill out the form and mail directly to the company. You may also apply online

through the company’s (www.studentaccidentinsurance.ca). The school insurance policy provides

ambulance coverage.

Assemblies

Awards Assemblies will be held regularly throughout the school year. Parents will be notified of the

Assembly date/time in the newsletter and on the website, and are encouraged to attend. Parents should

receive a phone call or note prior to the Assembly if their child/children are receiving a classroom

recognition / award.

Our Year End assembly for all students will be held near the end of June. We will inform you of the

date and time via the newsletter and website.

Storm Days

The decision not to open the school because of poor weather conditions and the

possibility of blocked roads, is made early in the morning by the Transportation

Supervisor and the Superintendent. If they decide the schools will not open, they will

contact the following radio stations: C.B.C. (990), C.J.O.B. (680), C.K.R.C. (630),

C.K.Y. (580), C.H.S.M. (1250), and the affiliated FM stations.

This information will also be posted on the Seine River School Division website www.srsd.mb.ca ,

Steinbach online www.steinbachonline.com, and on the The Weather Network Television station, and

their website http://www.theweathernetwork.com/schools/cambpoi2151458.

Should parents be concerned that road conditions in their locality are deteriorating; they may come and

pick up their children before the end of the day. Please call the school to inform us of your decision.

Volunteers

You may be interested in volunteering to help in the school. Volunteers may be involved in such

activities as:

Preparing classroom materials

Preparing hot lunches

Providing supervision

Helping supervise field trips

There are other volunteer opportunities available as

well. If you are interested in volunteering, or would

like more information, please contact the office.

Communication Between Home and School

We would like to encourage parents to visit us or call/email any time they have questions or concerns.

There are several ways in which the school endeavours to communicate to parents:

As well, teachers frequently make telephone calls or send emails to parents with questions or

information.

Please note: all volunteers are required to

submit to a yearly child abuse registry check.

Due to long wait times for this check to be

completed, please complete forms at least 3

months prior to the date(s) you would like to

volunteer. Forms must be presented in person

to the office for verification of identification.

Administration/In-service Days

Manitoba Education permits school divisions to close ten days per year for student administration

(marking tests and/or preparing written reports, and meetings with parents) and professional

development (teacher training) purposes. A professional development plan for the year is submitted to

the superintendent for approval. These dates can be found on the 6-day cycle calendar included in this

document.

Reporting System Formal Reports will be completed during the school year. These will consist of two oral reports

(Parent/Student/Teacher) and three written report cards.

Methods of Assessment

A variety of methods are utilized at different grade levels and at various curricular areas. Each teacher

has his/her evaluation plan and course outline which details specifically their method of assessment.

Similarities of assessment methods occur at the Early Years (K-4) and the Middle Years (5-8).

A. Behaviour Guidelines

Procedures in Handling Inappropriate Behaviour

STEP 1. Teacher/Supervising Adult discuss problem.

STEP 2. Blue Slip is written – Consequence is given.

STEP 3. If it is a major or repeated infraction, the Principal/Vice-principal is informed.

STEP 4. The parents are informed by the teacher or student.

Major infractions are dealt with beginning at step 5

STEP 5. If problem persists, a meeting is arranged between parents, teacher, principal,

and student.

STEP 6. Division is informed, and support services may be involved.

STEP 7. Student is put on a contract – possible outside agency involvement.

Minor infractions:

Violation of school wide rules (see chart on next page)

Major infractions:

Major offences will be dealt with through the office. These include:

Verbal abuse of a student, teacher or any other adult

Physical abuse of a student, teacher or any other adult

Threats to harm a student’s, teacher’s or any other adult’s person or property

Possession, threat with, or use of a weapon

Arborgate School’s behaviour management plan is designed to create a climate of cooperation,

academic excellence, respect, and safety.

We believe that School wide and classroom expectations must be taught, and students need to be aware

of the rewards for appropriate behaviour, as well as the consequences for inappropriate behaviour.

This approach enables each student to feel secure in understanding what’s expected.

Our aim is for each student to reach the worthwhile goal of self-discipline.

B. Out Of School Education

The Objectives for Out of School Education (i.e. field trips, swimming lessons) are:

1) To provide students with practical experiences connected to classroom learning outcomes.

2) To gain a better appreciation of cultural, occupational and environmental issues.

3) To gain lifelong recreational skills.

Note: If a bus is required for an activity, there will be a nominal fee charged for each

student riding the bus to offset the costs of transportation.
