Principal’s Message

Families,

Happy New Year! We’re glad to be back from a long winter break, and hoping

to make the most out of January. In addition to the other articles in this news-

letter, I have a few announcements that I think you’ll find important:

PTA News— The back page has a message from PTA, but there are multiple

separate flyers in this week’s Thursday Folder that you’ll want to see. Infor-

mation on excellent after school program options and this Friday’s free Family

Movie Night are included. Thanks, PTA for your continued work on behalf of

our families!

Inclement Weather— It’s winter so we all need to be ready for possible snow

delays and closures. Whenever FCPS decides to close, delay or dismiss early,

they’ll announce this on www.fcps.edu, the FCPS Facebook & Twitter pages, and

through local news and radio. Typically, their notices show up on FCPS Twitter

first. Always check before sending your child to school.

Teacher-Student Conferences—At Coates, we want students to take responsi-

bility for their learning. One way that we promote this is through our teacher-

student conferences at the end of the second quarter. This is a time when

teachers meet one-on-one with students to talk about their progress and help

them set goals. Expect a heads up in a few weeks in your teacher’s weekly

email or text. We’d love for parents to have follow-up conversations with their

child about their goals.

WIDA Testing—FCPS expects that every student who is a second language

learner will participate in WIDA testing. These assessments provide the school

with information about students’ language acquisition. They are not used to

generate school grades. Since there are several sections to the test, some stu-

dents may work on this assessment over multiple days. We will conclude WIDA

testing in February. Questions can be referred to Assistant Principal Vigil.

As always, we appreciate our partnership with you and every minute we get to

spend teaching your children!
