THEACADEMYTRIANGLEWebelievethatparentsaretheultimateeducators of their children. Their high interest in the well being of their chil-dren leads them to choose to send their children to Brookfield Academy.

One of the ways we express our belief in the role of parents is something we call “The Academy Triangle,” which rep-

resents the combined efforts of parents, teachers, and students to achieve educational excellence. The Academy Triangle represents the practical need for coordinated effort to achieve the highest possible success for stu-dents. More than this, it reflects our philosophical commitment to parents as the ultimate educators of their children.

Brookfield Academy parents are an integral part of the Academy Triangle. Parent participation in the affairs of the school is essential. Brookfield Academy is fortunate to have parents who believe in the mission, align with the ideals, and understand and support school policy. Upon occasion, it may be necessary to ask a family to withdraw if their actions are deemed contrary to the Academy’s ideals, policies, and expectations as stated in this handbook.

RELIGIoNATBRooKFIELDACADEMYBrookfield Academy is not church affiliated and is not a Christian school in the usual sense. At the same time, it is not a secular school. The school operates on the assumption that religious conviction is important to its

families, and it provides an atmosphere that is hospitable to religious belief.WhilewedonotattempttoteachtheBibleortheology, wedoendour assemblies with formal prayers, and our teachers are free to acknowl-edge the importance of religious commitment in their lives.

The school is sometimes described as “broadly Christian” or “Judeo- Christian” in its orientation. The Founders of the school were Congregationalists, but from the beginning the Academy has attracted families from a wide range of Christian denominations, other religious faiths, and from non-religious backgrounds. The teachers and the school itself do not try to persuade students to follow a particular religious tradi-tion, though judicious assertion of their own beliefs is accepted. This fine line of religious affirmation without religious instruction or indoctrina-tion has seemed to serve the Academy well in complementing the roles of the families and their churches or other places of worship. The Academy is generallyrecognizedforitshealthymoralenvironment,whichwefeelben-efits from our open acknowledgment that moral standards have a religious origin.

For the continued coherence of the school, it seems important to maintain this non-secular, non-sectarian approach with a clear understanding that Judeo-Christian values and commitments lie behind our commitment to education and to individual morality.

It is intended that the Academy will be a wholesome, nurturing place for children of all religious faiths or without a religious faith in the usual sense. The school’s religious stance is intended to be unobtrusive, though clear. The only religious views that are not consistent with Academy life are militant anti-religious views, or intolerant views between particular religions or denominations.

In order to maintain an inclusive climate, Brookfield Academy does not promote any specific faith practice, and we believe religious instruction and practice should be exercised at home and church, not at the Academy. Requestsfororganizedgroupprayers, religiousservices, studygroups, andthe like cannot be accommodated at the school.

A brochure elaborating the Academy’s position on religion is available fromtheHead’sofficeuponrequest.

SCHooLPoLICIESattEndanCEBrookfield Academy is committed to providing an outstanding educa-tional experience for all the students who attend the school. Therefore, it

ALL-SchooL InforMAtIon 2017-18 IIIHH 11

is imperative that students and parents alike view daily school attendance as an essential ingredient for students to receive the most from their Academy experience. Every effort should be made to limit absences for reasons other than illness. If a student has missed several days due to a medical condition, the school may ask for a doctor referral to determine how to best meet the needs of the student. Students who are consistently late or excessively absent (more than ten absences per semester) will be referred totheStudentMonitoringCommitteeandmayberequiredtoleaveBrookfield Academy. Consistent attendance, a willingness to work hard, and being involved in the life of the school will ultimately translate to a successful educational journey.

ComPUtErs and IntErnEt UsE

Computers, the computer network, and supervised internet access are available to all students. Upper school students will be permitted to bring their own computers, tablets, etc. to school and connect to Brookfield Academy’s wireless access to the internet. Students are expected to use the resources in a manner that follows the educational goals, academic guidelines, and code of conduct of Brookfield Academy. Academic use has first priority at all times. Users shall not enter any part of the computer network beyond their security level or under any other user’s login or password; such actions will be treated as vandalism. Users shall not make adjustments to any computer settings. The Academy faculty will determine and define appropriate use and can revoke privileges if guidelines are not followed.

Although the Academy employs an internet filter, no filter can prevent students from deliberate efforts to access inappropriate sites. Egregious violations of appropriate use policies may bring disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the Academy.

Students who bring their own computers or electronic devices to school must keep the items secure in their lockers or backpacks. Brookfield Academy cannot be responsible for damage or theft. In addition, the Academy has limited resources and cannot provide technical support or service for students’ personal electronic items. All school policies regard-ing computer use apply to students’ personal electronic devices when they are used on campus or while accessing the school’s wireless.

Students are strongly discouraged from the unsupervised creation of personal profiles or participating in personal profile social network-ingwebsites.Doingsoduringschoolhoursoratanytimeonschool

Brookfield Academy cannot be respon-sible for student profiles, instant messaging, or e-mails created while off campus. However, studentcommunicationsthatattacktheintegrityoftheschool, demean, bully, threaten, or harass others, or are inappropriate in other ways, even if created and viewed off-campus, may have a deleteri-ous impact on the culture and climate of Brookfield Academy. Therefore, the Academy reserves the right to take any action, including dismissal, to protect our students and preserve our culture.

CrIsIs managEmEnt Plan Brookfield Academy strives to maintain a safe environment for all of our students, providing appropriate supervision to ensure a warm and secure climate. At some time, however, we may be faced with an emergency orcrisisrequiringanimmediateandappropriateresponse.Althoughall possible scenarios cannot be determined, we have tried to outline a reasonable response to most.

TheCrisisManagementHandbookisprovidedtoallfacultyandstaffandoutlines responses to several emergency situations. The staff is familiar with the contents of this handbook in order to respond in accord with its policies and procedures.

An automated crisis phone call system will instantly send important messages to a parent-designated crisis contact phone number, relaying immediate and pertinent information.

dIrECtory and Its ProPEr UsEApproximately two weeks after school begins, a directory listing the names, addresses, and phone numbers of Brookfield Academy families and faculty members will be sent home with the youngest student in the family. This directory is provided as a convenience for communicating school-related matters among members of the school community. Its use for any other purposeisnotauthorized.Pleaseprotecttheprivacyoftheindividualslistedinthebook.Donotsharethedirectoryinformationwithanyoutsideorganizationsorindividuals.

drEss CodEOne of the many ways Brookfield Academy attempts to prepare students to live as “responsible, constructive free people” (in the words of the school’s mission statement) is by operating with a voluntary dress code, rather than a mandatory uniform policy. BA students are free to learn how to dress responsibly on a voluntary basis in the absence of mandates.

By establishing reasonable standards for responsible dress, the Academy makes it possible for students to express their individuality, while still exhibiting good taste and proper decorum in accordance with the societal virtues of modesty and propriety.

Students are expected at all times to express their adherence to the Academy ideals in their attire, grooming, and personal demeanor. All grooming should reflect a positive self-image and pride in personal appearance. It is impossible to make precise rules about every item of clothing, but we trust that students will reflect, in their dress, the formal, academic environment of the school. drUgs, alCohol, and toBaCCoBrookfield Academy does not assume the parental responsibility of teach-ing sex education, health education, or substance abuse education. However, theAcademywillprovidevariousmaterialsandspeakersforparents to use as resources. Because the Academy respects the parents as the primary educators of their children in these areas, it will not include classes or workshops for students on these topics. Brookfield Academy does have available resources in the respective offices of each division of theschool.PleasecontactyourrespectiveDivisionHeadtoreceivealistofthese resources. In order to provide parents with additional resources that may help educate their children in these areas, parents may consider:

•Familyphysicianorpediatrician•TheirlocalPoliceDepartment

Please note: Brookfield academy does not promote or recommend one resource over another. It is the parents’ decision to determine what resources might work best to educate their children in this area. This is how the Academy Triangle works to develop responsible students who are capable of making appropriate choices.

In order to protect and promote the physical and psychological health and well being of its students, Brookfield Academy does not endorse, allow, or condone the possession or use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs by students on school property at any time or at school sponsored or school sanctioned events regardless of when or where they occur. The use of illegal drugs is considered so serious that students involved in the use or distribution of illegal drugs off campus may be asked to leave the Academy. In any case, because students involved in any illegal activity off campus, including the use of alcohol, are likely to have a deleterious impact on the culture and climate of Brookfield Academy, the Academy reserves the right to take any action, including dismissal, to protect the integrity of the school. In addi-tion, students will be asked to pledge themselves to complete abstinence from alcohol and tobacco year round if they participate in school teams, clubs, and activities.

Students may not use or possess tobacco or tobacco products on school property or at any school sponsored or school sanctioned events regard-less of when or where they occur. Such use may result in disciplinary action including possible suspension.

Furthermore, parents are expected to support the school by reinforcing these expectations. Failure to abide by these expectations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including immediate, permanent expulsion from Brookfield Academy.

ExamInatIonsTerm and final exams are given exceptional academic weight at Brookfield Academy. For that reason, these examinations must be administered iden-tically to all students in a secure and supportive manner. This can only be done if all students sit for the exam at the scheduled time and appointed place. Families should make every effort to follow this policy. If, how-ever, for reasons beyond a family’s control, a student cannot sit for the appointed exam, parents must notify the division office as soon as possible and make plans to make up the exam at another time. A fee of $35 for each exam will be charged to compensate the instructor for preparing and making a new exam. The fee should be paid in the form of a check made out to Brookfield Academy, prior to the administration of the exam.

what is a Concussion and how does It occur?A concussion is a brain injury which interferes with normal brain func-tion. This affects the way an individual thinks, acts, behaves, and the phys-icalskillsneededtofunctiononadailybasis.Eachconcussionisuniquetoeach person, but there are some common signs and symptoms to be aware of to determine if an individual has a concussion.

A concussion can be caused by a bump, blot, jolt or fall to the head or body.Whentheheadorbodyisbumped,hit,etc.,theforceofthatmove-mentcausesthebraintohitthesidesoftheskullormoveand/ortwistwhile inside the skull. These movements change the way the physiology of the brain normally works. Even a mild blow to the head or body can cause the brain to shift or move in the skull, thus injuring the brain. what are the signs and symptoms of a Concussion?Once a concussion is sustained, more signs and symptoms can develop in the next 24 hours, even in the next week. The severity and side effects of this brain injury will vary depending on the individual. Concussion symptoms may appear mild, but can lead to lifelong problems mentally, physically and psychologically if not managed correctly. A person can have signs and symptoms of a concussion without the loss of consciousness. Symptoms of a concussion can last for less than one day or up to three weeks or more.

what to do if someone has a ConcussionIf the concussion occurs during an athletic activity, then the individual should be immediately pulled out of play. Staying in the activity with a concussion will make it worse. Theruleofthumbifaconcussionissuspectedis“Whenindoubt, sitthemout.” Staying in an activity with a concussion will prolong symptoms and recovery time and set the individual up for a more serious brain injury such as death, second impact syndrome or post-concussive syndrome.

Ifitissuspectedthatanindividualhasaconcussion,he/sheshouldberemoved from any and all activity and evaluated by a medical professional trained in concussion management. Early evaluation and detection of a concussion can speed the recovery process by ensuring proper manage-ment of a concussion. WI State Law Act 172 and Brookfield Academy require an immediate removal from activity and medical evaluation by a Credentialed Health Care Provider trained in evaluating and managing pediatric concussions of an indi-vidual suspected of having a head injury.

return to Play from ConcussionsWI State Law Act 172 and Brookfield Academy require medical clearance by a Credentialed Health Care Provider trained in concussion management before an individual can return to play. Brookfield Academy also requires an individual com-plete a Gradual Return to Play Progression (as outlined below) before the individual may return to play. This is a standard of care for concussions and other head injuries in the medical field.

Once an individual is sign and symptom free for at least 24 hours and a medical professional trained in concussion management has evaluated and cleared the person, a stepwise return to play progression can be started. The process, similar to recovering from a bad ankle sprain, involves grad-ually introducing activity which increases heart rate to the brain ensuring that the brain is able to tolerate the increased activity. If at any point in time during the stepwise progression the person has a return of symptoms, the person should stop the activity and contact the medical professional. It has been shown that by completing a stepwise, gradual return to play progression the likelihood of sustaining another concussion decreases. By

athletic Philosophy:WebelievethemeritsoftheFiveStarsaretaughton the playing fields as well as in the classroom. The abstract ideals of the Five Stars are demonstrated and nurtured by our coaches with the expectation that they will someday guide the concrete actions and decisions of our graduates. Interscholastic team sports provide an ideal opportunity for students to mature physically and emotionally, while learning the virtues of teamwork, fair play, leadership, and hard work. Accordingly, we maintain a “no cut” policy for Lower School, Middle School, freshman, and junior varsity teams while valuing varsity team membership as a privilege to be earned by those athletes exhibiting the necessary skills, dedication, and work ethic to promote a success-ful athletic program. Concurrently, we believe every team member deserves the chance to participate to the maximum of his or her indi-vidual ability in a competitive team environment.

Furthermore, we expect that players, coaches, and fans will at all times reflect the highest standard of the Five Stars in their personal conduct as they represent Brookfield Academy at athletic activities.

Students who do not meet academic standards will be placed on probation and may be suspended from participation.

Co-CUrrICUlar CommItmEntStudents choosing to participate in co-curricular activities and athletics representing Brookfield Academy to the community at large must abide by the provisions in the following contract. Parents and students who have signed the form indicating their receipt of this handbook are consid-ered bound by the provisions of this contract. Students may not par-ticipate in co-curricular activities unless they have on file a signed copy of receipt of the handbook and the co-curricular contract.

Co-CurriCular Commitment

As a representative of Brookfield Academy to the community at large, I understand that I am held to the highest standards of conduct and performance.

Specifically, I must maintain an average of 77 or better without failing more than one required full-credit course each quarter. (Quarter grades, not semester or year marks will be used for this policy.) Should I fail to do so, I understand that I will be immediately suspended from

40 HHHII UPPEr SchooL InforMAtIon 2017-18

participation for the following quarter. Failure to meet this standard in the fourth quarter will make me ineligible for participation in the first quarter of the following year.

In the interest of protecting my own health and keeping my priorities clearly focused on my academic progress, I understand that missing school for a day or any part of a day due to fatigue or illness will result in my being prevented from participating in practices, games, or activities taking place after school on that same day.

I must abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs. I understand that failure to abstain from alcohol will result in an eight-week suspension from participation for a first offense. A second alcohol offense will result in a full calendar year suspension from participation. Violation of the drug policy may result in even greater penalties than those for alcohol and may require separation from the Academy.

I must abstain from the use of tobacco. I understand that failure to do so will result in a two-week suspension from participation for a first offense.

I must be a good campus citizen and abide by the rules and expectations of the Upper School. I understand that failure to do so may result in suspension from participation in addition to any other sanctions I receive.

athletic Philosophy: WebelievethemeritsoftheFiveStarsaretaughton the playing fields as well as in the classroom. Accordingly, we maintain a “no cut” policy for Lower School, Middle School, freshman, and junior varsity teams while valuing varsity team membership as a privilege to be earned by those athletes exhibiting the necessary skills, dedication, and work ethic to promote a successful athletic program. Concurrently, we believe every team member deserves thechancetoparticipatetothemaximumofhis/herindividualabilityin a competitive team environment.

The focus of the Athletic Program at this level is on developing skills, confidence and teamwork in a competitive environment. The ultimate goal is to develop well rounded athletes that will make a positive con-tributiontoourUpperSchoolprogram.Whilewinningatthislevelis important and does promote positive team chemistry, it is not our primary focus. Often times, win-at-all-costs mentality ignores the importance of fundamentals and long term development of a player. Just as we patiently nurture and support our children academically, it is important to do the same in athletics.

The philosophy of the Middle School basketball program is one that combines the competitive and developmental aspects of the sport. Winningbecomespartofthisprocess, butasisthecaseinanysportatthe Middle School level, it is not the ultimate objective.

The teams in the highest division will play the maximum number of tournaments and games during the school season. Additional tournaments may be available before or after the season. It is the Academy’s hope that parents and athletes will continue playing for Brookfield Academy during the winter basketball season.

If a parent does not call in, the school will call home. Missed assign-ments can be picked up from the teacher or at the school office at the end of the school day.

Please do not allow a child who has been ill to return to school until well enough to participate fully in all school activities. For a list of symptoms that are signs that your child should remain at home, (see page 19).

Parents are discouraged from taking children out of school on non-vacation days. The rapid pace at which the classes move necessitates regular attendance. Missing classroom lessons over several days or taking exams early or late places an added burden on both the student and the teacher. athletic Philosophy:WebelievethemeritsoftheFiveStarsaretaughton the playing fields as well as in the classroom. The abstract ideals of the Five Stars are instilled, nurtured, fostered, and demonstrated by our coaches in the expectation that they will someday guide the concrete actions and decisions of our graduates. Interscholastic team sports provide an ideal opportunity for students to mature physically and emotionally, while learning the virtues of teamwork, fair play, and practice. Accordingly, we maintain a policy of “no-cut” team membershipforthosewhochoosetoparticipate.Webelieveeveryteam member deserves the chance to participate to the maximum of his or her individual ability in a competitive team environment. Furthermore, we expect that players, coaches, and fans will at all times reflect the highest standard of the Five Stars in their personal conduct as they represent the Academy at athletic activities.

In the Lower School, the emphasis is on learning the rules of the game, developingskillsandtechnique, andworkingaspartofteam. The lessons of good sportsmanship are introduced and practiced. Whilewinningisimportant, theultimategoalistoemphasizethebenefits of competition, team play, and sportsmanship. Each athlete who participates in practices should expect playing opportunity in each game. The coach will determine the amount of playing time and it will not necessarily be split evenly among all players.

Coaches at all levels take pride in coaching and developing young men and women—not just athletes. Coaches and teachers monitor athletes’ academic standings during the sports season and expect students to maintain acceptable academic performances in order to continue athletic participation.

sportsmanship: Sportsmanship is a high priority of athletic competi-tion. Athletes are expected to be excellent representatives of Brookfield Academy. They are expected to assume responsibility for represent-ing their team and school, respecting the rules of the school, and not engaginginactivitiesthatbringtheschoolintoquestion.

Please call teachers at home only in the case of an emergency.

The Academy Triangle

At Brookfield Academy, we believe parents have the ultimate responsibility for their child's education. One of the ways we express our belief in the role of parents is something we call “The Academy Triangle,” which represents the combined efforts of parents, teachers, and students to achieve educational excellence.

The students' role is to aim high, work hard, and achieve to the utmost of their abilities while assuming full responsibility for their actions and choices.

The parents' role is to make academic pursuits the students' top priority. Parents cheer and praise their students' accomplishments and support them in times of difficulty.

The teachers' role is to challenge and guide students, creating an atmosphere of excellence and an expectation of success, inspiring students to do their best.

Together, the three sides of the Triangle support and balance one another, giving shape to the exceptional Brookfield Academy education.
