Principles of Assessment

• Assessment is at the Heart of Teaching and Learning

• Assessment provides evidence to guide and inform teaching and learning

• Assessment provides the opportunity for pupils to demonstrate and review their progress.

• Peer and self-assessment are essential skills

Assessment Outcomes Provide Meaningful and Understandable Information for:

• Pupils in developing their learning

• Parents in supporting children with their learning

• Teachers in planning teaching and learning

• School leaders and districts in planning and allocating resources

• Government and agents of government

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods

that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student

comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress

during a lesson, unit, or course

Why the change in summative assessment?

"Too many students were labeled as proficient when, in reality, they had not fully mastered the standards and needed additional support. That hurt our kids who need to be competitive with

others across the country and hurt our teachers by making it difficult for them to have a true

picture of the academic strengths and weakness of their students.“

- Richard Woods, Georgia's School Superintendent

and readiness

Provide Parents information about their child’s learning

and progress

Provide information that will assist in improving

school and program effectiveness

Assessment Shifts

• Alignment with Georgia Standards of Excellence• Designed to encourage critical thinking,

analytical writing and real-world problem solving

• Fewer multiple choice questions• Increase in short-answers (constructed response)

and extended responses that require students to demonstrate a deeper understanding of key concepts

Georgia Milestones

• Promotion and retention in grades 3, 5, and 8 was waived. The results should be used to understand how well students mastered the grade-level content standards used in instruction. The results should inform instructional planning.

• Georgia milestones is one measure, not the sum total of all the student has learned throughout the school year. Test scores should always be reviewed in concert with other information about student achievement.
