During Period 2 in Years 7 - 10, teachers will run a Positive Education Homeroom Program, for 30 minutes each week, which includes: Mindfulness; Social and Emotional Competencies; Character Strengths; and Career Education.

Students will also have a weekly Assembly to celebrate achievements, share school values and focus on the Homeroom topic for the week, such as, Character Strengths; Career Development; Positive Relationships; Teamwork; Gratitude; Leadership; Perseverance; Growth Mindset; Grit; Planning; and, Empathy.

The students will be provided with a Positive Education Booklet, which they will use throughout the year, in Period 2.

We hope you will support your child with this program, to ensure their wellbeing and further develop their social, emotional and life skills.

The Homeroom Program is attached for your information.

Welcome to 2019 Year 7’sAs we farewell our 2018 Year 12’s, we also welcome our 2019 Year 7 students and their parents. Nearly 300 students and their parents attended their Orientation Day recently and the vast majority seemed to be very excited and looking forward to commencing their secondary schooling next year.

Office Hours and Day 1 2019Reception closes at 3.30pm on Thursday 13th December for the school holidays and reopens at 8.00am on 29th January 2019.

Students return to school Monday 4th February 2019.The day will begin with a whole school assembly in the Agora, followed by an extended Care Group before classes commence Period 2.

School Development DaysSchool Development day dates for 2019 were endorsed by the School Board:• Thursday and Friday 31 January and 1 February • Monday 29 April (day 1 of Term 2)• Tuesday 4 June (following long weekend Week 6)• Monday 22 July (day 1 of Term 3)• Friday 20 December (after students leave)

2019 Voluntary Contributions and Compulsory ChargesWe are mindful of the current economic conditions in WA and have attempted to keep costs as low as possible for parents in 2019. Our overall cost structure for Voluntary Contributions and Charges will actually be lower in 2019 than it was in 2018. We have been able to achieve this due to the fact that nearly 100% of our parents pay these costs in full.

By now you should have received your child’s 2019 Voluntary Contributions and Compulsory Charges Statement in the post. Please send an email to [email protected] to advise if you have not received your statement.

Personal Items Lists, Secondary Assistance claim forms and all the relevant back to school information can be found under the back to school icon on the school website http://applecross.wa.edu.au/back-school

Follow Up to Biennial SurveysParents have been asked to complete a short survey on the three lowest rated areas in the Biennial Survey. This will provide more information which I will then discuss with Focus Groups to more clearly identify issues that need to be addressed. I will report on the results of these surveys and meetings in 2019.

The parent survey is still open – Click here to complete the Parent Survey.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)Applecross SHS is committed to receiving feedback and amending our practices to best meet current student needs and parent expectations. As part of our annual review we received feedback from our Student Representative Council and various focus groups that the current BYOD device was not meeting our needs fully.

The recent survey of 839 students conducted on 19th November 2018 produced the following data:

Care Group Survey• 828 students were surveyed with 624 bringing their computer to school when a Care Group survey was conducted

on 19th November 2018.• 91% of Year 7, 82% of Year 8, 70% of Year 9, 46% of Year 10 students had their computer with them.

A laptop is an essential piece of school equipment and the school staff are committed to lifting our compliance rate to 100% in 2019. In liaison with our focus groups we have made the following minor changes to the BYOD programme reflecting the needs of the students and the changing requirements given software developments.

1. All Year 7, 8 and 9 Applecross SHS students are recommended to purchase the NEW model of HP Stream which meets our recommended minimum specifications of 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC. However if the HP Stream is unavailable any similar Windows 10 device which meets these specifications may be purchased.

2. Year 7, 8 and 9 students may not bring any device with another operating system to school.3. Year 10, 11 and 12 students are required to purchase a laptop and can choose any brand and configuration.4. Failing to bring a laptop to school in 2019 will result in communication with the guardian/parent in the first two

instances and then detention for ongoing infringements.

Students may not bring any other device to school as we wish to ensure the integrity of the Applecross SHS ICT framework through bandwidth to cater for all devices, appropriate monitoring software to ensure no inappropriate sites are accessed and no social divide on levels and costs of machines. Lower school students are not permitted to use an Apple computer.

Any questions can be directed to Darren Payton, Head of Technologies at [email protected] or 0403 967 794.

Important - Registered Training Organisations (RTO) - VET StudentsThose students assigned with VET courses at RTO’s in 2019 will be required to have 50% of the course costs paid by 10 December 2018. This is a requirement so we can be assured the student has a place for 2019. If you have any queries do not hesitate to contact the Finance Office on 9314 9368 but please be aware the school will not be able to extend past this deadline. Thank you all for your contributions in 2018 and have a wonderful break.

Sun safety with the hot weather approachingIt is important to talk to your children about sun safety and teach them good sun protection habits.

• slip on some sun-protective clothing, that covers as much skin as possible;

• slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun;

• slap on a hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears;• seek shade;• slide on some sunglasses. Make sure they meet Australian

Standards; and• extra care should be taken between 10am and 3pm when

UV levels reach their peak.

GOOD MENTAL HEALTH TIPS Eat Well Some studies suggest that what you eat affects your mood. A good balanced diet will make sure you have all the essential nutrients needed for your brain to function well, helping to keep you both physically and mentally healthy.

Get Involved Get involved with things. Do volunteer work, get a hobby, join a club or committee, play sport, join a meditation group, go snorkelling with a group of people, socialise or do a short course. The more things you do, the more connected you feel to the world around you.

Give a Compliment Give a compliment and allow yourself to feel good for making someone else feel good.

Build Friendships Keep in touch- invite a friend to lunch. Encourage new friendships-ask your friend to bring someone you have never met.

Share and Create Positive Relationships Close relationships have a huge impact on how we feel on a daily basis. A phone call, a couple of emails or a few texts, can help us feel connected to those we love Sharing thoughts and feelings with friends, family or a counsellor. Talking your problems through as soon as they appear can really help relieve stress and anxiety.

Reduce Harmful Effects of Alcohol and Drug Use Some people make the mistake of thinking that taking drugs can help get them through tough times. Drugs including alcohol, can contribute to, or trigger, mental health problems in people. Mental illness linked to drug use includes anxiety, depression, paranoia, panic attacks, and psychosis.

Help Others Do something to help someone else. Acts of kindness help other people but also makes us feel good. We are often happiest when doing something for others

Practice Skilful Conflict Resolution Conflict is difficult for most people. There are times where it may not be possible to avoid. Practising skilful conflict resolution can make a difference and, with the skills gained, may have additional benefits. Conflict does not have to be aggressive, discussing and talking through issues can benfit your own well being.

LET’S TAKE A STAND TOGETHER | Minister’s Statement on School Violence

It is however, a sad reality that some students come to school with the attitude that hurting other students or staff is alright. They choose to upset the good order of school life with intentional acts of physical aggression that create unsafe situations for others.

This type of attitude must change. We all know violence adversely impacts those directly involved - with physical and psychological harm a very real risk.

These acts also indirectly affect people in the wider school community; disrupting the school routine for many and impacting their sense of wellbeing, confidence and trust.

Reducing violence in our schools is a priority for the McGowan Government and we are taking action to address this growing community issue.

We have consulted stakeholders from across the community and considered their advice on the most effective ways to bring about change.

It is clear that we need to work together to address this issue in a united way. Schools alone cannot solve this problem and they need support from families and communities.

A plan has been developed to support school staff so they are clear about what is expected, and confident that their actions to maintain orderly learning environments for students will be backed by the Department of Education. The plan will also create a safer workplace for our teachers and other school staff.

Physical aggression has no place in our schools and the plan signals serious sanctions will be automatically imposed where students choose to hurt others.

The plan focuses on the intentional physical aggression and intent to harm others. Policy changes will not apply to students with a disability who either cannot control their behaviour or do not intend to harm others.

The response to violent behaviour is a shared responsibility and the plan includes actions that call for the broader community to be involved in real solutions.

Programs and resources will be available for parents to support their children, young people will have their voices heard and there will be ongoing discussion with community leaders and stakeholders.

There are no simple solutions to this complex community issue, but we must do better. This plan is the foundation for change - to take a stand together - and to ensure our schools are safe places for learning.

Hon Sue Ellery MLCMinister for Education and Training

From the MinisterEvery parent rightly expects that when their child is at school they will be safe, nurtured and supported to learn. Similarly, teachers and school staff should feel safe in their workplace.

AXSHS P&C ASSOCIATION

CHRISTMAS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS As we are coming to the end of the school year, please remember we are happy to take uniforms that are no longer needed. These may be left in the small red wheelie bin in the foyer of the Health Centre prior until the last day of school. During the holidays donations may be dropped off in Winthrop. Our online shop will be open during the school holidays and arrangements will be made for items to be picked up from our off site location in Winthrop. Visit us at http://axshsuniforms.wixsite.com/website The aim is to provide good quality uniforms and books that are no longer required at a flat fee. The funds generated will be used to support provide health and wellbeing services to our students. As this is an online shop only, there are no facilities for trying on uniforms for sizing. Please ensure you note the student name and Care Group ID.

We have sorted clothing into those items that are a very good to excellent condition, and those that are fair to good. The fair to good have no damage but may be more faded and have a small mark or stain. We do not have clothing that is torn or where buttons are missing or zips broken. We do not have excessively faded items or those with quite obvious marks/stains. Use the drop down SHOP menu at the top of the page to select a category or swap between categories We also have some individual items listed where there is a photo that identifies a mark that is noticeable but not maybe in a prominent spot. The second hand uniform volunteers take care in sorting garments appropriately, but there may be items overlooked. Also keep in mind that dye lots and cloth batches can vary from run to run - red shirts notoriously change shades of red from one batch to the next. If you purchase something that is damaged, please email us so that we can look at options for you.
