Ypres and the Somme Trip

23rd - 24th March 2017

In a trip led by Mr McLoughlin

and Ms George of the History

department, 45 students went

on an informative, and some-

times emotional, trip to Ypres

and the Somme.

Standing up well to the blustery

conditions, the students and

staff were able to see both

battlefields and memorials.

Areas of the Somme visited

included Sunken Lane, Mansel

Copse and Lochnagar Crater.

Whilst learning all about these

battles, and the people and

equipment involved, the

students were also able to

pay their respects at Lijssenhoek and

Tyne Cot War Cemeteries before witnessing the Last

Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

All of our students found themselves caught up in the

emotion of a ritual that has taken place in liberated

Ypres every night since 1928. Echoing the famous poem

were the words of one of the young people at the gate,

“We really will remember them.”

Gliding Taster day for 6th Formers in Dunstable

for Summer Scholarships 2017

On Tuesday 28th March, 15 Year 12 & 13 Kingsdale

students were selected as part of an Annual

Scholarship Programme offered by the giants Boeing,

Linklaters & British Airways. This programme offers

students from urban areas an opportunity to fly a

glider and learn some practical interview techniques.

The gliding taster day enables the students to apply

for a scholarship to attend a 2 Week Summer Flying

Course, with all expenses paid!

As part of the selection

process the students

must attend a 3 fold

interview at Heathrow

HQ in May. Competition

is fierce and only a few

get selected.

SCHOOL NEWS cont. Writing Camp at Kingsdale

Foundation School!

Nico Weide, Maya Freshwater, Jahtreas

Pitt, Keisi Smajli, Ronnie Tidder, Sanjida

Khan, Darcy Gosford, Edward Ikefoya from Year 9 took

part in a writing camp to create a collaborative novel

using innovative design processes and computer supported

technology. Whilst on the programme, the students were

guided by writers from White

Water Writers organisation

(funded by the charitable

organisation, the SHINE

Foundation) to develop their

creative writing skills, to share

their imaginative world through

words and to produce a novel in just one week. The draft

has now been completed and is ready for the next stage

of editing and printing! The novel will be published soon

and we are sure you will be able to relish the final

product by ordering your own copy! Watch this space for

more details from our published authors.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Correlation Pronounced: /ˈkɒrəˈleɪʃ(ə)n/

Definition: mutual relation of two or more things,

parts, etc.

The student noticed a close correlation between the

time she spent revising and her test results.

Upcoming Language Trips!

The Languages Faculty is buzzing with activity at the

moment and has organised 3 residential trips for the

next academic year. For pupils currently in Years 7 & 8

a Latin trip is running to the Bay of Naples in October

2017. We will visit Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii and

Herculaneum as well as squeezing in time for pizza and

gelato ice cream making lessons. For pupils currently in

Year 9 a trip to La Grande Ferme in Normandy is being

run in September by the French department. In addition

to French lessons and activities there will also be day

trips to Parc Astérix and the centre of Paris. For current

Year 10 Spanish students there is an action packed trip

to Murcia in November 2017 where students will have the

opportunity to participate in cooking lessons, water

sports, salsa dancing and much more!

participate in these

exciting trips, please
