OBJECTIVESDescribing the weather

It's cold.It's hot.It's sunny.

Hace frío.Hace mal tiempo.

It's nice weather.It's bad weather.

Hace calor.

It's snowing.It's windy.It's raining.

Pictures of weather conditions (hot, cold, sun, snow, wind, rain)Flashcards for the above vocabularyActivity Masters/Sheets 30a and 30b

MATERIALS

MUZZY Online Level I - Unit 5 - Scene 47 - Is it still raining? - 00:54-01:14An umbrella, a fan, sunglasses

* Make two general headings: "Hace buen tiempo" and "Hace mal tiempo" by placing these two vocabulary cards on the board. Place the picture of the sun under "Hace buen tiempo." Ask the class what other expressions might go under this heading. Do the same for "Hace mal tiempo." (To some extent this will be a matter of opinion.)

* Show the scene. Ask the student to listen to what Bob and Muzzy say about the weather.

ACTIVITIES

* Display the weather pictures prominently. Act out various weather scenes for the class. For example, open an umbrella and say, "¡Está lloviendo!" Put on a pair of sunglasses, and say, "Hace sol." Shiver, and say, "Hace frío." Wipe your forehead, and say, "Hace calor." * Place pictures of weather conditions on the board. Say each expression, and ask the class to repeat the expression. If all six expressions are too many for one day, teach three one day, and three the next.

Hace sol.Está nevando.Hace viento.Está lloviendo.

* Have each student make a weather book incorporating these expressions. On each page students write a weather sentence, which they can copy from the board. They should also illustrate that page. When finished, bind the book and give it a title, such as "¿Qué tiempo hace?" (What's the weather like?) Invite students to read aloud from their book.

* Place "season" pictures on the board. Practice season and weather sentences using a bean bag. The teacher says, for example, "en invierno" and tosses the bean bag to a student. The student must reply with some suitable winter weather expression, such as, "Hace frío" or "Está nevando." Then do this in reverse by announcing the weather; students respond with seasons.

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS* The expression for "it's cloudy" is "Está nublado."

* Have a weather report each day from an appointed "weatherman."

* Require students to keep a weather journal for a month. They should record the date and weather for each school day. For example, "Doce de abril. Está lloviendo"* Use Activity Sheets.

This weather map can be an excellent interdisciplinary activity with the science department. Encourage students to use proper weather symbols on the map. Students can refer to the map as they give their oral weather report.

ENRICHMENT PROJECT: Weather continued

* Have students practice the report and gather weather-related props. A student talking about rain may want to carry an umbrella and another talking about the cold may want to wear a coat and gloves while giving the report.

Part IV* Have students give an oral weather report to the class, using props and referring to their map of Gondoland.

Part III

* Give a blank calendar to the students who are listening to the reports. After each report, the listeners should draw the correct weather on the correct calendar square. This will encourage quiet and polite listening if calendars are collected at the end of the presentations.

OBJECTIVES, DIRECTIONS AND ANSWER KEY

¿Qué tiempo hace hoy? / What's the weather today?

(Begin this activity on a Monday.) Review the days of the week and weather expressions, using the visual cues. Have students cut out the weather pictures and keep them in a safe place. Each school day for one week, students will complete the sentence "Es _________." with the appropriate day of the week and an accurate description of that day's weather. They will then paste or tape the corresponding picture at the end of each line.
