1. Authoritarian (Brickwall)

• Characterized by strict discipline imposed by parents• Children’s behaviour is managed through

rewards & punishment• Rules are much more rigid & children are

expected to follow them closely

Authoritarian

• Children raised with this style of parenting may feel rejected by their parents; often have problems both socially & emotionally due to lack of flexibility •When physical punishment turns to abuse,

children suffer emotional consequences• High-risk group for sexual promiscuity,

drug abuse & suicide

2. Permissive (Jellyfish)

• Characterized by few rules & little parental control or guidance of children’s behaviour• Children control the family• Permissive parents often overindulge their

children• Guidelines or rules seldom exist

Permissive

• Children raised with this style of parenting tend to be impulsive, irresponsible, & immature in their behaviour; they have not been taught to consider how their actions affect others• High-risk group for sexual promiscuity,

drug abuse, & suicide

3. Authoritative (Backbone)

• Characterized by warmth, support, acceptance, & indirect positive control & guidance of children’s behaviour• Guidelines are in place to help children

learn to live in society• Guidelines are flexible to adapt to different

situations

• Children raised with this style of parenting tend to be better adjusted socially & emotionally, & have a better self-concept• Tends to buffer children from sexual
