Parenting Tip of the Month!

Health and Safety

Dial 9-1-1 Fast Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies — every second counts. If you see or have any of the listed symptoms, immediately call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number. Not all these signs occur in every heart attack or stroke. Sometimes they go away and return. If some occur, get help fast!

HEART ATTACK WARNING SIGNS: -Chest discomfort: Most heart attacks involve chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfort-able pressure, squeezing, full-ness or pain. -Discomfort in other areas of the body: Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. -Shortness of breath: with or without chest discomfort. -Other signs: May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

STROKE WARNING SIGNS: (Spot a stroke F.A.S.T.) -Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. -Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? -Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeatedly correctly? -Time to call 9-1-1: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hos-pital immediately.

CARDIAC ARREST WARNING SIGNS: -Sudden loss of responsiveness: No response to tapping on the shoulders. -No normal breathing: The victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five seconds.

Valentine’s Day...Did you Know?

Based on retail statistics, about 3 per cent of pet owners will give gifts to their pets on this day.

About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year

Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on this day to make them dream of their future spouse.

Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for this holiday in the late 1800s.

More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold.

73 percent of people who buy flowers on this day are men, while only 27 percent are women.

15 percent of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased on this romantic day in the U.S.

189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on this day.

220,000 is the average number of wedding proposals on Valentine's Day each year.

Creative Corner

You will need empty toilet paper roll, some red paint, and a handful of blank cards or con-struction paper. Start by flattening the cardboard tube so it had a crease on two sides. Then push one crease inward to make a heart, and wrapped a piece of tape around the tube to help the heart hold it's shape. Pour a little red paint on a plate and dipped one end in the paint.

Heart Stamp for Valentine's day!
