Introduction

• Third and fourth grade reading levels are one of the best indicators of future academic performance

• Students who struggle in third grade have a higher likelihood of being retained during their school career and a higher likelihood of dropping out of high school

• About 75% of struggling readers in third grade remain struggling readers in high school

PALS Interventions

Reading• Stamina- research supports that reading stamina will

gradually increase with quality of reading practice ( see handout, Ways to Build Reading Stamina with Your Child)

• Fluency (speed, accuracy, expression) – the ability to read words quickly with accuracy and expression

Fluency is at the heart of making meaning from the text. It provides the bridge between word recognition and

comprehension.

• Comprehension- CROPQVS, Fix Up strategies ( see handouts)
