Introduction

• Third and fourth grade reading levels are one of the best indicators of future academic performance

• Students who struggle in third grade have a higher likelihood of being retained during their school career and a higher likelihood of dropping out of high school

• About 75% of struggling readers in third grade remain struggling readers in high school

Third Grade Expectations

• Organization– Materials– Changing classes– Agendas– Time Management

• Increased responsibility (SOAR)– Turning in work – Ownership over learning

• More independent seatwork• Multi-step problem solving

PALS Interventions

• “How to be PALS” to support new expectations– Increased household responsibilities– Create homework area in your home– Begin to discuss schedules with your summer

activities

Curriculum Changes

• Standard Course of Study– Reading and Math– Writing

• Homework Expectations– Length of time– “How to be PALS” with homework

Social/Developmental Changes

• Peer relationships gaining more importance• Groups of friends beginning to emerge– Cliques and bullying

• Competence and confidence emerging vs. increased academic and social pressures

• Seek more independence but sensitive to failing and frustration

PALS Interventions

Reading• Stamina- research supports that reading stamina will

gradually increase with quality of reading practice ( see handout, Ways to Build Reading Stamina with Your Child)

• Fluency (speed, accuracy, expression) – the ability to read words quickly with accuracy and expression

Fluency is at the heart of making meaning from the text. It provides the bridge between word recognition and

comprehension.

• Comprehension- CROPQVS, Fix Up strategies ( see handouts)
