Ile-de-France, known as “the Paris region”, is a historical and administrative region of France. It’s a very populated region which represents 18,8% of the population of the metropolitan France. Ile-de-France has 11,73 million inhabitants.It’s inhabitants are called “Franciliens”.This region has 8 departments: Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne.

Val-d’Oise represents the northern part of the Parisian crowdedness .The department is characterized by a contrasting territory which regroups 2 natural regional parks, a natural and touristic heritage on one hand and on the other one, strongly urbanized areas, the first airport in the Continental Europe, Paris Charles-de-Gaulle. The name of the department comes from Oise, major tributary of Sene, which crosses Val-d’Oise.

Yvelines is a French department belonging to the great crown of Ile-de-France region. Its residence, Versailles, developed around the castle and it was the capital of the kingdom of France during the old times.

Val-de-Marne- is a French department belonging to the Ile-de-France region. It has this name because of Marna, the longest French river which crosses its territory.

Hauts-de-Seine is a French department which belongs to the small crown of Ile-de-France region. Except for the parks and forests, Hauts-de-Seine can be considered totally urbanized.

 Essonne is a French department located in the south of Paris in Ile-de-France region, as integrated part of the Parisian crowdedness .Its name comes from the Essonne river which crosses its territory from the South to the North until the confluence with Seine.

The Park in Ile Saint Denis

Seine-Saint-Denis is a French department located in northern part of Paris which belongs to the small crown of Ile-de-France region.

Seine-et-Marne is a department of Ile-de-France region. Its name is due to the Seine and Marna river .

Paris is the capital of France, the residence of Ile-de-France county .The city is divided in 20 districts. Its inhabitants are called Parisians. It is one of the most populated European cities(12 mil.). Symbol of the French culture, sheltering numerous monuments, the town attracts millions of visitors a year. Paris occupies an important place in the world of fashion and luxury, it’s also the most visited capital in the world.

Seine crosses the city forming an arch. The river enters the town through the south and gets out in south-west .More than 30bridges allow the crossing of the river.

THE CLIMATE

Paris has an oceanic type of climate: the oceanic influence exceeds the continental one. The medium minimal temperature from June to August is 15,1 °C and 3 °C from December till February.

Paris is the second European city in the air traffic of passengers and the fifth in the world. The 2 airports which serve the traffic are Orly and Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle.

• The network has 59 bus lines, covering and perfectly completing the subway one.

• REN(The Regional Express Network)

• It’s a great railway which serves a big part of Ile-de-France region. It has 5 lines: A,B,C,D and E.

The subway in Paris came into service in 1900 and today it has 16 lines. It’s the easiest and fastest mean of transport for moving in the capital, but also the cheapest. The Parisian subway has 300 stations , its entrance is signaled by a yellow “M”.

THE FRENCH CUISINEThe French gastronomy is varied and very famous . Each French region has its own

specialities. The North-west cuisine uses butter, cream and apples. The South-west cuisine uses goose fat, foie gras (goose liver), pancakes and plum brandy. The South -east cuisine has Italian and mediteranean influence , using olive oil and aromatic herbs. The Northern cuisine, marked by the Flamand influence uses potatoes, pork and endives. The Eastern cuisine has a German influence ,dishes being usually made of pork( bacon ,sausages, sour cabbage)

THE FRENCH CUISINE• Among the typical French dishes we find: baked beans with smoked

meat , fondue savoiarda (melted cheese in white wine typical for the Savoia region),goie gras (goose liver), goose meat conserved in fat, tartiflette , Breton pancakes, boiled belly , aligot (mashed potatoes with melted cheese) and snails.

• France is also famous for its bread (especially the wand) and for its extremely various cheese: camembert, roquefort, beaufort, Saint-Félicien, these being only a few. Cheese is usually tasted with wine.

• As dessert there are various tarts and cakes(Tatin tart, charlotte, quatre-quart(cake with butter ,eggs, sugar and flour in equal parts, strawberry tart).

THE GASTRONOMY IN L'ILE DE FRANCE

In Ile-de-France are grown vegetables, fruit, seasonings… and the art of sweets! In a historical way, l’ Ile-de-France has always been the region where the kings’ of France spent their leisure time and on its great variety of landscapes, woods and fields are grown small miracles. This way we can mention: the Paris mushroom(champignon), at first grown in the disposed neighborhoods of Paris, tasty fruit and vegetables such as the Faro apple, Montmorency cherries, Groslay pears, French peas, Argenteuil asparagus or green beans.

• Regarding the meat, in Ile-de-France are grown fat birds and pigs from which it’s obtained the Paris bacon, but we can also find beef from which we prepare recipes such as: Navarin lamb, Mironton beef, calf head with vinaigrette or Henry IV stew.

CULTURAL AND TURISTIC HERITAGETHE LOUVRE

The Louvre is one of the most important and the most visited museums in the world nowadays. It is also the biggest museum in Paris having 210 000 m2.This old royal palace, the residence of the kings of France has a long history starting with the Carpathian kings in the XIIth century till nowadays. After the French revolution in 1793 it was turned into a national museum. In 1988, the president Francois Mitterrand decided to turn Louvre into the biggest museum in the world and the work was done by the architect Ieoh Ming Pei.

THE LOUVRE He built the pyramid made of

glass 20 meters high which represents the actual entrance of the museum.Museum with universal vocation, it presents more than 35 000 operas divided in 8 departments: Oriental antiquities, Egyptian antiquities, Greek antiquities, Etruscan and Roman, Islamic art, sculptures, art objects, painting , graphic art.Among the most famous pieces we can admire: Leonardo da Vinci’s Joconda, Eugene Delacroix’s Liberty guiding the people, Venus in Milo.

This great Lady, inaugurated by Gustave Eiffel on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, dominates Paris from its height of 324 meters. For more than 120 years it watches with its steell grace the banks of Siene and Marte’s Field. When the night falls it shines with all its lights in order to mark the passage of time, an unforgettable performance for lovers. This work of mechanic art inspired numerous artists, poets, writers, painters, filmmakers. It’s the most visited paid monument in the world. Besides climbing the 3 floors it is possible to attend temporary exhibitions or to visit Eiffel’s private apartment..

The Arch of Triumph

The Arch of Triumph of the Star or simply the Arch of Triumph , built between 1806 and 1836 at Napoleon’s order, is placed in Paris in the 8th district, in the l’Etoile market, in the western end of Champs-Elysees avenue, 2.2km away from the Concorde market.50 m high, 45 m wide and 22 m deep, it is administrated by the National Monuments Center.

Etoile market forms a huge traffic roundabout with 12 avenues realized in the XIXth ordered by the baron Haussmann , at that time the prefect of the Seine department. You can reach this place through the subway station Charles de Gaulle-Etoile.

CHAMPS-ELYSEES BOULEVARD

Or simply Champs-Elysees is a large and famous avenue in Paris. It is considered the most beautiful avenue of the capital and according to an often used phrase in France it’s the most beautiful avenue in the world. It is also one of the main touristic places in the capital.

Notre-Dame Cathedral Included in the world heritage, it’s one of the

outstanding masterpieces of Gothic architecture. It has numerous painted windows and rosettes. Its building started in the Middle Ages and lasted almost 2 centuries, from the XIIIth century till the XIVth century. Its ornaments, spires, towers, bells, inspired one of the best known novels of Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris. Placed in the historical center of Paris in the extreme side of Ile de la Cite, it symbolizes the center of Paris and all the French road distances are measured from the church market. Known in the entire world for 5 centuries, it receives more than 50000 visitors.

SACRE-COEUR CHURCH

• It dominates Paris with its white dome. Placed on the top of Montmartre hills, one of the tallest hills of Paris, it offers one of the most beautiful views of Paris. This church in the shape of a Greek Cross, just like its encrypt, was realized in the Roman-Byzantine style. It was built between 1875 and 1923 by the architect Paul Abadie, after the Paris Commune .The church measures 80metres. The ceiling is decorated with the biggest mosaic in France which measures 480 m2.It also has the biggest bell in France which weighs 19 tones. On the hill, below the church can be found the Tertre market with its painters, Abbesses neighborhood where steep streets meander, and at the bottom of the hill can be found the famous Moulin Rouge.

The Pantheon

Soufflot’s masterpiece (1713-1780) and an ex-church, The Pantheon became during the Revolution the necropolis of great people.72 important figures rest there: Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Jean Jaurès et Jean Moulin, and since 1996 André Malraux.

The Invalids Dome(The National Residence of the invalids)

Built by J.Hardouin Mansart between 1679-1706.This is the most beautiful dome ever built. Its lantern is 107 meters high and it was gold plated again in 1989 when celebrating the bicentenary of the French Revolution. The church of the Dome became military necropolis, it shelters Napoleon I’s grave.

Alexander the IIIrd Bridge

Alexander the IIIrd ‘s Bridge is a bridge over the Seine between the districts 7 and 8 of Paris. You ca reach this site with the help of the subway station Invalides, Indivalides railway station, line C of RER.

Garnier Opera

• Placed in the Opera market , built between

1861-1875 by the architect Charles Garnier, the Garnier

Opera has a rich decorated façade, a monumental ladder and

an Italian room of 1900 seats with a ceiling painted by Marc

Chagall, lit by a huge crystal chandelier. This building is a

perfect example of the XIXth century architecture with steel

and iron structure covered by beautiful decorations.

The City Hall of Paris

• The City Hall of Paris-headquarter of the municipality people of Paris. The first municipality dates back in 1246(Saint-Louis).

• The actual City hall of Paris was rebuilt by Theodore Ballu and Edouard Deperthes on the old location of the City Hall of Paris, burnt during the Paris Commune in 1871.

Conciergerie and Sainte Chapelle

This important vestige offers a remarkable testimony of the civil architecture in the XIVth century with the Gun People Room, Guards’ room and its kitchens. Almost the entire inferior floor was turned into prison in the XVth century. Jewel of the Gothic architecture, the Saint Chapel was built in the XIIIth century due to Saint Louis’s order to shelter Jesus’ crown of thorns.

Famous gardens

The Luxembourg garden- it’s a private garden open to the public, placed in 6th district of Paris. Built in 1612 at Maria de Medici’s request to be next to the Luxembourg Palace.

Famous gardens• Tuileries-once a

neighborhood of Paris, placed between the Louvre Palace, Rivoli street, Concorde market and Seine. The name of the garden comes from its location, on an ex-tile factory.

• Today, the site shelters a public garden, the most important and the oldest garden in French style in the capital that once was the garden of the Tuileries Palace, ex royal and imperial residence.

The Castles

• Royal residence between XIIth and XVIIIth century, Vincennes Castle has conserved inside, the medieval towers, Sainte-Chapelles(Saint Chapel) and the IVth century dungeon, the tallest in Europe.

The nightlife in Paris Moulin Rouge is a Parisian cabaret founded in 1889.It is located on Clichy avenue in the 18th district, at the bottom of the Montmartre hill. • In order to spend a quiet holiday, avoid unpleasant surprises: don’t wear your purse in the back pocket of your trousers, don’t leave your bags open, take care of your mobile phone. Don’t trust those who offer you various services, go to official counters.
