Galerie Binome confronts the work of two artists with opposite practices: view camera and old fashion processes for Mustapha Azeroual, new technologies and virtual world for Thibault Brunet.

Rising star of contemporary art, Mustapha Azeroual gained recognition for revisiting old fashion processes and applying it to contemporary photography along with a research on frame, volume, sequence and movement of the viewer. As for Thibault Brunet, who photography institutions supported very early on, he never uses a camera to create his images: they emerge from landscape studies extracted from video games, data collection from Google Earth and 3D scanner shots made in partnership with Leica Technology.

Beyond the divergence of their vision, both approaches are engaged in a new writing of images through rethinking the limits of the photography medium and the definition of the photographic field. The attention the two artists pay to the representation of landscape is another entry point in the dialogue between their works.

Thibault Brunet (1982, French) is a virtual photographer represented by Galerie Binome in Paris since 2012. His work plays with the codified genres in photography to question our relationship to virtuality in a society where reality as a whole is being digitalized.

Shortly after graduating from the Ecole supérieure des Beaux Arts in Nîmes, he distinguished himslef from 2008 with outstanding series based on video games. For several years, Thibault has travelled through virtual worlds with his camera looking for landcapes - Vice City - and faces - First Person Shooter. This work draw the attention of several institutions and competitions: Winner of [reGeneration2] of Musée de l’Élysée (2011), Finalist of Aperture Fondation New York Price (2012), FOAM Talent 2013, Mois de la Photo Paris (2012), European Month of Photography Berlin, Vienne, Luxembourg, Los Angeles(2012-13), Institut d’Art Contemporain de Villeurbanne (2013), Public Price of Sciences Po for contemporary art (2014), Prix Coup de cœur Art-Collector - Jeune Création (2014), Winner Carte Blanche PMU /Le Bal (2014), Winner of Photo London John Kobal Residency award (2016). His work is also present in prestigious collections such as the French National Library (BNF) and the Elysée museum.

In 2014 Thibault took part to a collective project, France(s) Territoires Liquides. With his Typologie du virtuel, he selected in Google Earth buildings that were coproduced by anonymous individuals, hence shedding a light on the desire to leave a trace in the digital world. The images were exhibited at the Tri Postal museum in June 2015 and the Biennale de Lyon in Septembre 2015.“ Thibault Brunet acknowledges the dilution of reality by a virtual

world and photography by synthetic images ”[extract] Étienne Hatt, chef editor and journalist at Art press magazine, Répercussions exhibition, Galerie Binome, november 2015.

Thibault embraced a new approach for the PMU Carte Blanche 2014 at the BAL and worked on the digitalization of the real world using a 3D scan. Since then, this project has been ongoing with the technological partnership of Leica for the series Territoires circonscrits and exhibited for the first time in November 2015 at the Galerie Binome.

Several solo exhibitions are showed in 2015: Sunol Foundation in Barcelona, at the Espace Saint-Cyprien in Toulouse and at the Galerie Binome. He also participates to the following group exhibitions : Nouveaux territoires de l’image at FRAC Languedoc Roussillon in Montpellier; Prix Coup de cœur Art-Collector in Paris; Jeune création internationale in Singapour with the Institut d’Art Contemporain of Villeurbanne; Focus of the Lyon Biennale and Conséquences in NEMO Biennale internationale des arts numériques in Paris.

In 2016, in the rest of his solo exhibition Répercussions at Galerie Binome, he shows his artwork at Art Paris art fair, Photo Basel and Paris Photo. A triptych of Typologie du virtuel series integrates the contemporary art Municipal Fund of Paris; acquisition by the FMAC exhibited at FIAC 2016. During two month of New York residency with the partnership of Leica Technology, as part of the John Kobal Photo London award, Territoires circonscrits series take off. After Les immobiles (Filigranes editions, Jan. 2015) and Typologie du virtuel (La Pionnière editions, Oct. 2016), Inexplorations, a monographic book published with support from the National Centre for Visual Arts (CNAP) is being prepared for a release planned for 2017.

Vice City (2007-13)

‘ The Vice City series, recently exhibited in Paris, Berlin and Vienna, demonstrates how Thibault Brunet’s photography is connected to digital creation. The artist explores the world of video games (Grand Theft Auto) as a meta-wanderer. Freeing himself from the fun and hyperactive gamer stance, he lets his avatar wander freely to appropriate the virtual world and capture, as a modern vagabond, moments of beauty. His poetical urban beauty in deserted regions invites contemplation.Questioning the in-between and ambiguity, Thibault Brunet creates hybrid images, between artifice and reality, photographic character and pictorial tradition. The artist thus inverts the nature and function of video games by giving this popular medium artistic and historic depth. A pertinent way of questio- ning an unusual path, as yet little explored in contemporary creation: the aesthetic elements of video games, diverted and transformed into a work of art. ’

Typologie du virtuel (2014-16)

‘ With ‘Typology of the virtual’, Thibault Brunet explores the territory of France through Google Earth. [...]The images in this series have been created from buildings situated in peri-urban zones and scale-modelled in 3D par GE users. Shopping centres, housing estates and big company towers come under global architectural typology, without any connection with the territory. Brunet anchors them in a specific space and time, adding a shadow shaped according to the day and time of their conception. He re-contextualises images by connecting them to the action of their original maker and places himself in a sequence of collective creation within which he becomes a new link. The context is a shadow, it is the creation of a projection space vanishing into the mist and that the artist compares to a ‘digital cloud 4’ whose buildings seem to suddenly appear like pop-ups. ’

Territoires circonscrits (2015-16)

‘ Black coal and yellow sand are the two colour spaces conveyed in Thibault Brunet’s series Territoires circonscrits. It is a universe which comes from the modelled landscapes captured via a three-dimensional scanner. With an engineer and a ScanStation provided by Leica, Thibault Brunet travelled the coastline for 30 kilometres, from Calais to Cap Gris-Nez. The scanner came equipped with a laser which allowed him to measure distances and volumes in 360°. The camera integrated into the machine contributed a second phase of colour. However sophisticated the technology, even in a such a cutting-edge industry, the image is not a copy but an extrapolation. Thibault Brunet plays with these ideas. [...] He appropriates instruments, measurement tools and representations. And shows us their limits. In so doing he highlighting the blind spots of technology, however powerful it may be. From this, he delivers a new construct that is dreamlike, almost fantastic.’

Considered as a rising star of contemporary art in France (Huffington post, October 2015), Mustapha Azeroual, born in 1979, is a Franco-Moroccan self-taught photographer. A scientist by training, his work is based on observation and experimentation, confronting traditional shooting and printing techniques with the contemporary challenges faced by photography. Combining installation, object and sequence, his work multiply the fields and dimensions of photography.

Represented by Galerie Binome (Paris, since 2013), his work is also present in Art Factum Gallery at Beyrouth (Lebanon), Cultures Interfaces at Casablanca (Morocco) and Mariane Ibrahim Gallery at Seattle (USA).

He takes part in various international fairs in the Middle East - Dubai Design Days, Art Dubai and Beirut art fair - and Europe - Paris Photo, Art Paris, Slick Art Fair.

For several years he is a permanent resident of La Capsule, Creative Photography Center of Bourget, and joined Fresh Winds Residency (December 2015), as part of the Biennale of Contemporary Art Gardur in Iceland. He is currently developing the Ellios project, a study of light in partnership with the LESIA (observation pole of the sun from the Observatory of Paris-Meudon).

First major exhibition in 2011 at the National School of Fine Arts of Paris where the Resurgence series includes the exhibition The tree and the photographer, with the support of Françoise Paviot.

“ Back on itself. As a Sufi dervish turns on itself, the photographer has turned around his mountain. In both cases, the center does not matter. The subject either. What matters is to prove that what makes things visible is not visible. We cannot « see » the light. We only discern the edges of what it reveals, slowly, to the eyes and to the spirit.”[extract_ Dyptique n°35 magazine] Marie Moignard, « Praise of slowness », about Ellios series, Sublimation exhibition, october 2016, CDG Fondation, Rabat, Maroc.

In 2015, the installation Arbre#1 of the Résurgences series is est acquired by the MACAAL, future Contemporary Art African Museum Al Maaden in Morocco. The same year, he exhibited at the Contemporary Art Center of MEYMAC (France), at Art Paris Art Fair, at La Maison Molière in Arles (France), and at the Contemporary Art Center of Saint-Avertin (France). As part of the Biennale of Contemporary Arab World Photographers, coordinated by the Institut du monde arabe and the Maison européenne de la photographie, he shows Radiance#2 at Galerie Binome. That piece was especially noted by national and international press (RFI, L’Orient le jour, Grazia Maroc, The eye of photography).

In 2016, he takes part in À dessein exibition at Galerie Binome. The Échos series, daguerreotypes of the traces of light left by photographers’s flashes, a particularly noteworthy atwork in this perfect balance among a sensible and conceptual work, questioning both the photographic medium, its history and the magic of a reflective object. In parallel with his solo show at the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery in Seattle, he took part in the collective exhibition Lines at the Musée Eugène Carrière of Gournay sur Marne (France), especially alongside Joël Bartolomeo, Jean-Christian Bourcart and Alain Fleischer. Then, with Hicham Berrada, Nabil El Makhloufi or Najia Mehadji, his work was presented in Sublimations exhbition at the CDG Foundation in Rabat (Morocco). Currently and until December 17, he shows Phenomenon# 1 (volum) series as part of the exhibition The photographic object, photography by volume, with Michel Le Belhomme and Marie Clérel, at the Immix Gallery (Paris).

Mustapha Azeroual, Écho#1 series, À dessein Art Paris Art Fair, 2016, Grand Palais, Paris. Daguerreotypes (unique prints) - 20 x 16 cm.

Écho#1

By observing the light, the first fascination and original condition of view, the paradox arises immediately in his painful dimension: making visible not visible. With a reversal of the photographic medium, Echo # 1 series works on a materialization of light and its source.Since 2013, in partnership with LESIA (observation pole of the sun from the Observatory of Paris-Meudon), Mustapha Azeroual develops through the Ellios project, a study of the photographic record of the sun and its alteration phenomena. Echo# 1 series is a continuation of his research, focusing on capturing flashes, photographic substitutes of the sun light. Photographing portable studio lighting led to highlight the light, not only as a condition of the visible, but as the first form of subjectivity of the appearance of the subject. This is an approach in an inventory form that tries to draw an aesthetic of light.

Radiance

Started in 2013, the Radiance project looks into the way photography can grasp colors, coming from the standpoint that photography only has a limited control over the colors it captures and reproduces on film. Two series from these experiments will be presented during Paris Photo.

The Radiance#4 series consists of five trichromatic gum bichromate prints of the same image. It questions the recording, replication and reproduction of colors. The photographic process is seen as a phenomenon, an autonomous and changing element to create unique images.

Radiance#2

The lenticular printing Radiance#2 (2016) juxtaposes a series of five images. The work intertwines traditional- for the take- and contemporary techniques –for the printing processes. “ Mustapha Azeroual creates a digital artifact from colors he captures with view a camera at sunrise and sunset. The artist amounts the landscape to the horizon, a borderline from which he starts and vanishes. The vibrant lenticular surface revives the cycle of light in such an unstable color chart that two people next to each other can hardly see the same hues. The image rebuilds with each new viewer. Mustapha Azeroual sends us back to the origins of landscape and its infinite expansion, to light as a field and the conditions of its eruption. ”

ELLIOS

The ELLIOS project is a comprehensive study on light as the condition of the visible and its representation.

The ELLIOS#1 triptych consists of three shots of the same mountain from different viewpoints. It questions the subject and its ambiguity: by limiting representation angles, does photography narrow or open the field of interpretation?

Showing the negative image allows to reveal the light as the primitive imprint on landscape..

Galerie Binome - biography

Galerie Binome opened in the Marais in Paris in October 2010 and is devoted to contemporary photography. In parallel to an annual program of solo and group shows, it takes part in Mois de la Photo in Paris and regularly exhibits in international contemporary art and photography fairs. Member of the Comité professionnel des galeries d’art and co-founder of Photo District Marais, Galerie Binome collaborates with various other key figures in the world of art and photography, curators, privat and public institutions.Galerie Binome opens his program to emerging artists from contemporary art. The selection leans more specifically towards visual arts, in search of new forms of photography. These artists, from a variety of backgrounds, from conceptual photography, sculpture, performance, drawing and writing, explore the boundaries of medium and supports. To define the domain of photography, its scope and limits, as well as the post-photographic condition, are at the center of the research carried out by the gallery.

Galerie Binome is directed by Valérie Cazin. Graduate in private law, she practiced with lawyers at the Court of Cassation for twelve years, specializing in copyright law. She founded Galerie Binome in 2010 after a course in visual history and scenography in 2010. Valérie Cazin regularly participates in portfolio reviews and is on the jury for photography competitions. Since 2015, she’s assisted by Émilie Traverse. Former student by ENSP in Arles and High School of Rennes in visual art, Émilie Traverse is skilled as exhibition’s curator and productor.
