Le Place de la Republique is an urban creation of the nineteenth century.

Over the decades, it has built a strong symbolic value. However, traffic has become paramount at the expense of urban quality and a diversity of uses.

In 2008 Paris City Hall launched an ambitious project for its redevelopment, around three objectives:

1. To reaffirm the republican symbol and enhance the historical heritage2. To integrate the new mobility and create a better sharing of the public space3. To enhance the usability of the site and create a gathering place

Developed in consultation with local residents, users, traders and, more broadly, the citizens of Paris, the project aims to restore Parisian charm and friendliness.

After a contest, the prime contract was entrusted to the architectural planners Trévelo & Viger-Kohler (TVK).
