* * * * * * * * Holy Trinity/Ascension Homeless Shelter

The Homeless Shelter, now at Ascension Church at 221 W. 107th St., has been one of Holy Trinity’s major Outreach Programs for thirty years. The Shelter will open for the season this Saturday, October 19th. They need a few volunteers to join the leadership team, and, as always, volunteers to cook, set up, clean, sleep over and visit with the guests throughout the season. If you would like more information, please contact Chris at [email protected] or Robin at [email protected] or 212-749-5938. The Shelter is a great way for friends and families to work together to help the needy.

“I am a most noteworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely. I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous Presence.”

BANNS OF MARRIAGE JALAL DEEB & GINA TOUCHAN

* * * * * * * * “The Church … is not a relief organization, an enterprise or an NGO, but a community of people animated by the Holy Spirit, who have lived and are living the wonder of the encounter with Jesus Christ and want to share this experience of deep joy, the message of salvation that the Lord gave us. It is the Holy Spirit that guides the Church in this path.” – Pope Francis, for World Mission Sunday * * * * * * * *

THE CHURCH’S FIRST WOMAN DOCTOR “Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582), more commonly known as Saint Teresa of Avila, joined the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation at the age of twenty-one. Disheartened by convent life, in particular its spiritual laxity, opulent nature, and overly social atmosphere, she began a reform movement that provided the framework for the Discalced Carmelites. Members of this new branch of Carmelites modeled themselves on the poor and crucified Christ, adopting a life of poverty and abstinence. In collaboration with Saint John of the Cross, Teresa helped bring this new way of life to the male Carmelite communities. Their reforms met with great resistance, but they moved forward with faith and persistence. Among her many writings, she is well known for two classics: The Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle.” – Sourcebook * * * * * * * *

+ A Scriptural Reflection + “WHERE ARE THE OTHER NINE?” “The First Reading presents an unusual story from the Old Testament in which God heals the Syrian military man, Naaman. This Gentile trusted the Israelite prophet Elisha to heal his leprosy in the water of the river Jordan, and then professed faith in the God of Israel. This story offers a scriptural precedent for Luke’s theological perspective that Gentiles will have a covenant relationship with God, along with Israel. In Luke’s earlier account of Jesus’ rejection at Nazareth, the Lord had indicated God’s inclusiveness by referring to the example of Naaman. The Samaritan leper and Naaman the Syrian exemplify Luke’s theological outreach.” – At Home with the Word

San Lucas Evangelista Octubre 18
