The Adoration Chapel will close at

5:00 p.m. Holy Thursday, March 29.

It will re-open after 8:00 a.m. Mass

Monday, April 2.

From the Desk of Father JackGreetings!

Today the crowd gathers and yells “Hosanna!” to our King.

Today we come together to celebrate Jesus’ entrance into

the city of Jerusalem. The people waved palms; he rode

in on a donkey, and palms were placed before him as he

journeyed into the city to su! er and to die for you and me.

Spring has come and Lent will be ending. I want to take this time to in-

vite you all to the high liturgies of Holy Week. On Thursday we will gather

at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the institution of the Eucharist. We celebrate the

Last Supper and re# ect on what the presence of Jesus means for each and

every one of us. Hopefully, the Eucharist is so powerful to us that it sends

us forth to wash the feet of those we encounter. We strip the altar after our

Holy Thursday liturgy and move on to Good Friday to celebrate the greatest

sacri$ ce of all, the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus died for all of

our sins. Keep that in mind as we gather on Friday at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate

his su! ering and death. But, it isn’t over yet. On Saturday evening we come

together to celebrate the Easter Vigil at 8:00 p.m. Do you know that every

Mass we celebrate during the year # ows from this great Easter Vigil? This

liturgy is so important because we who gather on Saturday evening will

experience the Risen Jesus. Wow! Then, we gather on Sunday morning to

celebrate new life and Jesus Christ in our midst.

Come one and all to celebrate these sacred days. By the way, we will gath-

er Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to pray Morning Prayer in the chapel at

8:00 a.m. Morning prayer is a great way to start each of these days.

Happy Palm Sunday, Happy Holy Week, and Happy Triduum. Let’s look for-

ward to Easter!

Peace, Father Jack

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion: From Hosanna to Cruci# xion Bernie Leach

Palm Sunday starts out so triumphantly with exultant music and a solemn

procession. But by the proclamation of the Passion, during the time of the

Gospel, it has changed dramatically.

The triumphant procession that begins Mass is a symbol of the pilgrim

church on its way.

It is not a re-enactment of Christ’s own journey as much as it is representa-

tive of our own continuing journeys. We could not make this trip if it had not

already been made by our Lord, Jesus Christ. We proclaim our “hosannas”

with a profoundly deeper understanding of the Paschal mystery than those

who were actually there were able to have. Together we are celebrating a

triumph already achieved (Christ’s dying and being raised from the dead),

a triumph already achieved (our participation in that saving mystery) and

a triumph yet to be achieved (Christ’s coming in glory). We look forward to

the day when Christ shall return in glory to lead us processionally into the

holy of holies before the throne of God!

Before this glory, however, we must face the soberness of the Passion. St.

Stephen’s is using a musical version of “The Jesus Prayer” as a refrain dur-

ing the Proclamation of the Passion this year. This prayer is widely taught

in the history of the Orthodox church as a way to open one’s heart to the

presence of Christ. From triumph to su! ering, the liturgy ends on a slightly

more sober note than it began – taking us all into the holiest week of the

Church Year.

The Cross and The Triduum“We should glory in the cross” - the Entrance Antiphon for Holy Thursday

reminds us that Christ’s resurrection gave new meaning to carrying a cross.

The Triduum celebrates this one great mystery of our faith in a more in-

tense way than all the rest of the liturgies for the whole year. Lent ends with

the beginning of the Holy Thursday service and Easter begins the Monday

after Easter Sunday. The three days of the Triduum are the hinge that holds

the two pieces of the paschal season (Lent and Easter) together. Please con-

sider joining our faith community to “glory in the cross” and give praise and

thanks to God for another year.

Rice Bowl CollectionLenten Rice Bowls will be collected during the Faith Formation sessions on

Tuesday, April 3, Wednesday, April 4 and Sunday, April 8. We will have par-

ish contributions collected the weekend of April 7-8. Thank you for your

generous donations to Catholic Relief Services.

Thank You to the Knights of ColumbusThe Anoka Knights of Columbus recently donated $700 to St. Stephen’s

Faith Formation programs. Thank you to the Knights for their dedication to

helping Catholics of all ages grow in their faith!

Grand Knight Kevin Setterholm presented a check to

Faith Formation Director Katie Gebhard on Sunday, March 11.

The donation will be used for Faith Formation programs.

Women’s Morning of Re$ ection -“Gathered in His Name”Join us for a wonderful morning of re# ection, conversation and com-munity as we gather in His name for our spring women’s retreat. We’ll celebrate our community of faith as we listen, re# ect, and share. We will leave the day refreshed by our sisters in Christ. Save the date: Saturday, April 14, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in The Refuge. Watch for additional infor-mation in upcoming bulletins.

The Grapevine

A Palm Sunday Re$ ection Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer, SSND

So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it.

And he sat on it.

Many people spread their cloaks on the road,

and others spread leafy branches that they had

cut from the ! elds (Mark 11:7-8).

In Mark’s Gospel, clothing represents one’s

identity. It is a symbol of the person.

In o! ering their cloaks as saddle cloths, the disciples are o! ering them-

selves to be with Jesus as he enters Jerusalem. Jesus receives their com-

mitment.

Jesus also road over cloaks on the road. The people provide a carpet, repre-

senting themselves, over which Jesus rides into Jerusalem.

In Guatemala the people design a beautiful alfombra, made of colored

sand, for the processions in the streets: when the people carrying the stat-

ue of Jesus come along, they walk through it. It is a carpet for Jesus.

What might I use as a symbol of my commitment as I walk with Jesus dur-

ing this Holy Week and the Holy Triduum?

No podríamos
