What are the rules and what are the goals? We will certainly discuss this in the next while, but it is important for us to keep in mind a few things. The tradition is that this is the day that we would consume our last meat products before the fast begins. Next Sunday - traditionally - is when we (of the fasting category) would consume the last of the dairy products before Lent begins. During Lent we would live on grain foods and products (bread, cereals) vegetables, beans, greens and fruits and nuts and such, (sounds like a health food diet). However, what is the actual regulation now? Well, the latest version of Particular law (i.e. for the Ukrainian Catholic Church) says that the purpose for fasting and acts of abstinence and repentance is to “expiate sins committed (by us and others) and to achieve a greater level of perfection for personal sanctity”. As for actually fasting/abstinence, it reads: no meat or dairy products on the first day of Lent (Feb 12) and on Good Friday (Mar 30). No meat throughout the first week of Lent (Feb 12-17) and Passion Week (Mar 26-31). Abstain from meat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is no obligation to fast on Saturdays and Sundays. The basic age provision is that those between the ages of 15 and 59 inclusive, as well as those physically able to, should maintain the fast. So… there is the longstanding tradition and the basics of the present regulation. We are free to choose how we keep the fast within those obligations, always remembering our personal and social spiritual needs today in our lives...

The Great Fast begins in a week!

100 years

As we approach the beginning of Lent (one week now and counting!) there has been a number of questions raised and discussions had over the question of “fasting”. What are the rules and what are the goals? We will certainly discuss this in the next while, but it is important for us to keep in mind a few things.
