SAINTS AND FEASTS11.06 St Barnabas, Apostle - born Joseph, was an early Christian, one of the prominent Christian disciples in Jerusalem. According to Acts 4:36, Barnabas was a Cypriot Jew. Named an apostle in Acts 14:14, he and Paul the Apostle undertook missionary journeys together and defended Gentile converts against the Judaizers. They traveled together making more converts and participated in the Council of Jerusalem (c. 50). Barnabas’ story appears in the Acts of the Apostles, and Paul mentions him in some of his epistles. Christian tradition holds that Barnabas was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus, in 61 AD. 13.06 St St Anthony of Padua - (1195-1231), also known as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order.

IN THE NEWS - Walk with ChristA crowd of 7000 people took part in the annual Walk with Christ Eucharistic procession through the streets of Sydney last Sunday according to The Catholic Weekly.

This year’s procession, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, coincided with the 200th anniversary of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Sydney. Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP led proceedings, which began near the corner of Martin Place and Pitt Street. Along the way hymns were sung and prayers recited, including the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. The procession made its way to the forecourt of St Mary’s Cathedral for adoration and reflection.

During his homily, Archbishop Fisher recounted the story of Fr Jeremiah O’Flynn, the only Catholic priest in the colony of Sydney in 1818, who left the Blessed Sacrament with the lay faithful before he was deported to England. Those pioneering Catholics, he said, would not have imagined that 200 years later there would be 5.2 million Catholics in Australia and 1400 parishes.

And in Brisbane an estimated 3500-4000 people joined the Walking behind Christ march through the streets last Sunday according to The Catholic Leader. In its third year, the procession attracted so many people it was standing room only in the Cathedral, with at least half the crowd being young people.

influence of Satan. Like the family of Jesus who don’t want to see him for who he really is becoming, or has become, the Scribes misunderstand Jesus’ fight against evil.

Jesus dismisses their claims through his use of the image of binding the strong man before entering the strong man’s house. Jesus has ‘bound’ Satan proving himself the stronger and has set about undoing the work of evil in the world.

At the end of today’s gospel passage, Jesus states, ‘Whoever does

the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’ Family bonds were critically important in 1st Century Palestine. Jesus does not deny his family kinship, but expands it to include anyone who does the will of God. All those who work to bring about the Kingdom or Reign of God share a bond with Jesus, they share a familial link with him. Whenever we act to bring about God’s dream for this world, we join our efforts with those of our brother, Jesus.

Hello there,My wife and I went to the vigil Mass at Brunswick Heads with the main celebrant the Bishop.

It was a bonus for us to be able to walk across from the Sails Motel and attend Mass and we did enjoy the welcome we received from a number of parishioners who clearly saw we were visitors. You even invited us to stay on for the BBQ that I think you were having but we had prior commitments so could not stay.

As we left Mass and having walked around the town earlier in the day we both remarked on the lovely community feel you have in your area and clearly a great faith community, it is indeed a treasure.

We are happily retired here in Carterton about 90km north of Wellington. Thank you once again for a wonderful liturgy. God bless,Anne and Sean Mulcahy - Edited.
