Nick is here to minister to all who have need in our parishes. He is keen to be told if someone has moved in and to have an opportunity to visit newcomers. Holy Communion can be arranged for the housebound or those who are sick. Nick tries to take Thursday as a rest day each week, so he kindly suggests that you only contact him on a Thursday in matters of urgency.

EGGSACT TIMING Easter is early this year, but why, people have been asking me more than in past years, does it not fall like Christmas, on the same day? I personally agree that there would be more than simple convenience in having the greatest festival in the Christian year fixed on a certain date. How did we get where we are now on this? Like the Jewish Passover, which for Christians anticipated it, the Resurrection is held to mark an historical fact, but one which occurred at a time when methods of measuring time were different. A 4th Century council of all the Bishops in Christendom, including representatives from our own shores, decided to fix Easter on the first Sunday after the full moon, following the Spring equinox. Over time however, inexact astronomical observations led to different interpretations of when the feast should be kept. Three hundred years later it was our Celtic ancestors who were considered to have gone furthest adrift and at a church council in Whitby in 664 Bishop Wilfrid [the saint credited with converting Sussex to Christianity] laid down the law on this. Unfortunately, as far as the timing of Easter this was not the end of the matter, simply that Rome considered itself the sole authority in such matters. Accordingly it was the Pope who in the 16th Century revised the calendar and formula for calculating when Easter should fall. It is to be regretted that at the time the Eastern Orthodox Churches which then as now comprise a hugely significant part of the Christian world, were not consulted. As I write this, Pope Francis is engaged in a historic meeting with the Russian Patriarch and healing old divisions is back on the agenda. Archbishop Justin has spoken recently of revisiting the question of the date of Easter. Churches could be seen, in a lovely phrase coined by the Father Gregory CSWG the late superior of the monastery at Crawley Down to be ‘bending towards one another in humility’

It would be a wonderful symbol of unity if the leaders of the divided churches could agree on a date for Easter at only the cost of a little loss of pride. Meanwhile; well, what would happen if like the first Christians we kept every Sunday (even in Lent) with Easter gladness? There is one way to find out! Nick

The Reverend Angus McFlint writes... It was wonderful to be at home amongst the splash of tartan and skirl of the pipes for Rusper's first Burns Night Supper in living memory. I was delighted to help my wee Sassenach cousin's Kirk raise some funds. I hear we managed to stuff 967 English Pounds into the sporran that night while stuffing our faces with the most delicious haggis. Thanks to our brilliant team of organisers and to all our supporters, not least those from North of the [Surrey] border!

EULOGY TO JOYCE WILSON Our ancestors’ background were fairground people and used to have their fair on Hampstead Heath. Our paternal grandfather was a static steam-engine driver so it is presumed he worked the steam engines at the fair. What a coincidence as Grandad Beacher used to drive a traction engine on the Lyne Estate. Our family has a lot of history in Rusper. Granddad and Grannie Miles used to live in Sweet Briar which is opposite The Star pub. At that time, Sweet Briar was called Rose Cottage. Uncle Tom Miles was once the publican of The Plough in Rusper. Grannie Miles used to help with births and deaths as they did in those days. A lot of my family (the Miles) are buried in the church yard because of the two wars. Mum was born in Croydon and her Mother was called Minnie. When her Mother died, Mum was still a baby and was brought up by her Aunty who we all called Grannie, so Mum had an extended family. Mum had a very happy childhood living at Philsbrooks near Capel where she went to the local school and was in the school sports team. Apparently Mum loved playing sport. Mum went also to Sunday school in Kingsfold. Mum left school when she was fourteen as that was the norm in those days. Mum was in service at Taylor's just up the road from Philsbrooks as a House Maid, then she went to Venters in Rusper and then to Mrs Birks at Blackfriars near Langhurst. I do not know how long Mum worked at any of these jobs. It was here that Mum became a young lady, working there as part of the family, going to the Odeon in Horsham and having afternoon tea in the restaurant after the film. Mum and her brothers and sisters all had their jobs to do and I believe that is why they were all a hard working family. When Mum was growing up, she went dancing in Horsham, Rusper and Kingsfold. Mum loved to dance and along with her brothers and sisters would bike miles to a dance. Mum could sing very well. Then of course Mum had to do War work, so she went to Clock House to work making bricks as the men were abroad fighting so the women had to do the work. Mum enjoyed it but when the men came home she was out of a job. It was through Uncle Len taking Dad to Philsbrook that Mum and Dad met. Dad joined the Army with Uncle Len and John English from Gardeners Green. Mum and Dad were married in Warnham church on 6th December 1946. When Dad

Rusper Parish News March 2016 5

died, they had been married 4 months short of 60 years. After they got married, they lived at Philsbrooks for a while and Johnny was born there. When Dad came out of the Army they moved to Lyne Estate where they had a small flat over a coal house. They used to call it Coal House Villa. Lyne Estate was where Captain Broadwood lived. Granddad Beacher used to work for Captain Broadwood and the Broadwood Estate where they made the Broadwood pianos. Dad was a gardener for Captain Broadwood and Uncle Len also worked there and he lived in the Carters Cottage. Mum worked at the dairy at Friday Street with Auntie Dot. Mum and Dad were on the housing list and being as they were living in the Rusper Parish they were allocated a house in Rusper. Mum and Dad moved to Rusper in 1950 where they lived for 65 years in the same house. When they first moved there, Rusper was a small place where everybody knew each other and helped each other. We had a good upbringing with good food, nice clothes and a holiday every year. Mum’s brothers and sisters spent so much time at Rusper it was like a second home to them and Granny Beacher used to shop at The Forrest Stores as it used to be called. The manager was Mr De Bow. As Mum told them in the shop when they were talking about the oldest customer, she had been going into the shop since she was a baby of about six months. Mum worked at the Plough when Burt and Ella lived there and also at The Star. Mum and Dad used to be in the darts team at The Star in Rusper and so played against other pubs in the area. Mum then moved to Ghyll Manor where she was a companion to Mrs Neves – Vivienne Neves’ mother. Ghyll Manor was at the time owned by Vivienne Neves, the former model. Mum found that work very interesting. When Mrs Neves moved, Ghyll Manor was sold to Kennedy Brooks who turned it into a hotel and Mum continued to work for Kennedy Brooks until her retirement. When we were growing up Mum and Dad could go out again. They used to walk to the Royal Oak at Friday Street as neither Mum nor Dad learnt to drive. In the evening everybody used to sing around the piano. Sometimes they used to go into Horsham to see the wrestling at The Capitol where they saw some famous people. Mum lived in Cooks Mead and died on 22nd November 2015; I think she was nearly the oldest person in Rusper and had seen many changes to the village. Mum will be missed greatly by all her family and friends. Joan and Andrew

Thank you!from Rusper PlaygroupWe were overwhelmed with the support the village gave to our Phil the Bag initiative. We managed to collect 500kg of recyclable textiles, which raised the funds necessary for our staff to complete valuable training, including ‘Child protection’, ‘Networking’, ‘Talking Clearly’, ‘Promoting Positive Behaviour’ and ‘Special Educational Needs Coordination’. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, we believe our children will benefit for a long time to come.

What better way to invest the funds raised through the Rusper Bake-Off, than in a top quality play kitchen for our children. In addition to being a lot of fun, it is helping to teach the children many valuable things, such as developing imaginative play, increasing social skills, encouraging them to keep things organised and helping them to identify different household objects and foods stuffs. We think its a great addition to our Playgroup, thank you.

RUSPER CHRONICLE MEETING 11th FEBRUARY ‘A walk around Rusper’ slide show

Rusper has such a long history that it would be impossible to capture it all in one evening and in one slide show which was put together by Margaret White for a talk to Newdigate History Society last year. But we tried!

Postcards showed such scenes as ‘The Old Church Cottages’ which were demolished in about 1900 to make way for the 'new' Wayside Cottages we see today, and the church when it was much smaller in 1805, before the rebuilding in 1858 by the Broadwood family. The Cottage has now grown into Ghyll Manor. Rusper House with its T shaped window, which is said to be associated with weaving to let more light in – but originally Rusper House was to the left of what is now Ghyll Manor and moved sometime early in the C20 to its present position off the Newdigate Road. Ghyll Cottages called ‘The Old Cottages, were first built in 1600 and then extended in 1650 and 1700. But what were they called then, does anybody know? The Village shop in 1908 when it was two shops with a hardware store next door. And The Rusper Chalice, which can be seen today in the British Museum dating from c1200. The Chalice was found in 1840 in an unidentified coffin in The Nunnery. You can see a photo of it today by searching Rusper Chalice on-line.

We also saw a drawing of the windmill, and postcards of the village hall and the school in the early C20 and finished with a drawing by Mr Pigrome, headmaster of the school and done in 1900 of the blacksmith’s shop which was next to Averys. Many thanks to Viv and George for their help in putting on the show. If you like to join the group and discover more about our History then please come along to the next meeting:

7pm Thursday 10th March in the small Village Hall

when we shall be looking at farming in Rusper
