The Rector writes:I recently noticed this headline on an article about the American

election:The U.S. wants change – but not too much and not just yet!

How true ~ both of American politics and of many areas of life. Yet changes come, sometimes through choice and sometimes because of circumstance. Some changes are regrettable, and are beyond our control, like this one:

Some changes are to be welcomed.

As we come together more in missionand ministry across the Benefice, this prayer (attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr) may be useful and necessary:God grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.

Many of you will have heard that Richard Yates was taken seriously ill while on holiday in New Zealand. Praise God Richard is on the mend, but progress is slow. One or two difficulties remain and the medical staff are working on them. Plans are beginning to be made to bring Richard home, something to which we look forward very much. However, the result of this episode is that Richard has decided to bring his retirement forward from October 2008 until now.Please continue to remember Richard and Jane in your prayers.

Diana Britten has been Deacon in the Benefice since September 2007. In the summer, her role will change. On Saturday 28th June 2008, Di will be ordained priest. Please put this date in your diaries and if you can, come and support Di on this occasion. (There will be more details later.) On Sunday 29th June, the fifth Sunday of the month, there will be a Benefice Service at St Margaret’s, Corsley at which I hope Di will celebrate her first Eucharist. This will be followed by a celebratory ‘Bring and Share Lunch’, to which I hope as many of you as are able will come. Please continue to remember Di in your prayers as she prepares for her ordination to the priesthood.

Easter has come, and it has been wonderful to share the celebrations of our Lord’s resurrection with so many. We come to the season of Annual Parochial Church Meetings over the next few weeks. This is your opportunity to contribute to the life of our churches, to shape future policy, share ideas and maybe implement change. Please do your part and come to your parish APCM.

We move on to a total contrast at Assisi where we trace the life and lifestyle of the ‘little poor man’ Francis. His commitment to total simplicity speaks to us and challenges us across the centuries. Staying actually within Assisi, the delightful little hill town which is Italy’s national shrine, amidst the beauty of the Umbrian countryside, we shall be able to come very close to this most contemporary of saints. Richard AskewBelarusian Ray of Hope - giving care after Chernobyl

We are an independent Charity operating in the south west of England giving care to 7-11 year old Belarusian children. We are delighted to announce that the Heath family from Monkton Deverill are hosting 2 boys during June & July. Host families treat their Belarusian Visitors as part of their family for a month but we always need more families and hosts for the adult leaders, these are often more difficult to find. During the visit Belarusian Ray of Hope organise a series of outings most of which host families join. We are currently looking for sponsors for these outings, as a day at the seaside costs almost £300 but this is the first sight of the sea for the children and is a fantastic day out for them.

Children with Cerebral Palsy are purchased walking frames and we make a long-term commitment to them bringing them back twice a year to have their frames adjusted and to learn new movements and massage treatments.

We have speakers available to talk to any group from schools to pensioners groups and all in between. We welcome donations made payable to Belarusian Ray of Hope. FairtradeA huge thank you to all who supported the recent Fairtrade Fortnight

events in Warminster and to everyone who came to our local Coffee Morning in the Deverills on 8th March. Special thanks to the great cooks who made the delicious cakes using Fairtrade ingredients which we all enjoyed, to the lovely people who were busy all morning making coffee and washing up, and to the very kind souls who helped with the setting up and clearing up.

As a result of our Coffee Morning a donation of £100 has been sent to Traidcraft Exchange, the charitable arm of Traidcraft. This is a fantastic achievement from one local event. The money will be used to help Traidcraft’s producer partners overcome the barriers that prevent them benefiting from trade so that they can work their way out of poverty.

Here’s just one example of how this is done in practice:Traidcraft has been buying honey from Apicoop, the beekeeping co-

operative in Chile, for more than 15 years. Apicoop was becoming concerned at its reliance on just one product and asked for help with diversifying into blueberry production. Traidcraft helped Apicoop obtain a loan and provided a grant to help them plant the blueberry bushes. It has also developed a new blueberry flavour in its popular Geobar range to prepare a space in the market for when Apicoop’s blueberries are ready. Support like this makes all the difference to small producers. Juan Inostroza explains how it helps him and his wife Marina, “If we have one bad year in beekeeping at least with the money from the berries we can still feed our family. At least we can pay our debts.”

Deverill Valley Traffic UpdateThe Nightfreight Lorry In early February the Traffic Sub Group drafted

a letter, on behalf of the Parish Council, to the Managing Director of Nightfreight. In the letter we expressed our concerns over the safety and suitability of the Nightfreight lorry using the B3095. In early March the Parish Clerk received a response from Nightfreight's South West Director informing us that the driver had been instructed (with effect from 12th March) that he was no longer to use the B3095 and that he must use the A350/A303. This is very good news and hopefully this issue has now been brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

HGV Advisory Signs Some of you may have noticed that an HGV advisory sign at the Longbridge Deverill (A350) and Hill Deverill (B3095) junction has been erected, advising HGVs to go south on the A350 in order to get onto the A303. This is a welcome measure and should reduce the number of HGVs using the B3095, however there is no such sign at the Mere end of the B3095. The Traffic Sub Group, through the Parish Council and in conjunction with Mere Parish Council, hope to have the same success in persuading Wiltshire County Council to erect a similar sign in Mere, and we should have an indication in April if funding is available for this.

B3095 Traffic Survey - Volunteers You may recall that during the survey on white lines we asked for volunteers to assist with a future traffic survey on the B3095. A number of you registered your interest but we have had difficulty in contacting some of you. Therefore, could I please put out a second appeal for volunteers. The snowdrops in Kingston, Brixton and Longbridge were so pretty this year. Now we are enjoying beautiful displays of daffodils and soon the primroses and other spring flowers. All these activities make our churchyards look attractive and well cared for. The Post Office has taken note of all the points made to it, particularly that the site for its proposed Outreach Service was no longer available. The Post Office's formal position is "Having regard to all comments received during the public consultation and all other relevant factors, Post Office Ltd has decided to proceed with the closure of this branch and to replace it with an Outreach Service." In other words, no change from the previous proposal! ‘Consultation’ on another site continues. Meanwhile, we are told that the Post Office at Longbridge will remain open until the middle of the year.

Here at Crockerton School we are rightly proud of our reputation as an amazing school. This was further recognised with the outstanding Ofsted report that we received last year. We – the staff and governors as well as the children – are committed to the school and we know that people in the village and parents are hugely supportive (for which we are always grateful).

Crockerton School exists for the benefit of the children in Crockerton and the parish of the Deverills. Without the school they might have to travel long distances. However our success is not always without its issues. Parents, who are concerned about giving their children the best start, are increasingly opting for places at Crockerton School. This is helping assure the future of the school, but consequently a number of children attend from outside the parish and this brings an increase in traffic. Residents of the village enjoy Crockerton’s reputation as a quiet, safe village in which they often know most of the people who surround them and where a strong and vital community spirit exists.

Part of our success as a school is because we continually look to try to improve the relationships that we have both for ourselves and for those around us. We feel that one of the ways that we can do this is to facilitate the setting up of a parent / village panel where villagers and parents have the opportunity to discuss issues that face them and agree ways forward to resolve them.

To this end we would like to invite you to an open meeting at the Bath Arms in Crockerton on Tuesday 22nd April starting at 7.30pm. The aim of the meeting is to explore the idea of setting up such a panel, and to find 3 parents and 3 village residents who are prepared to work on it. The ideal people will be open-minded, will seek out and represent the views of their area in an impartial way, and will be prepared to support the overall aims of the panel. They will need to be prepared to commit some time, energy, and ideas into making this work for the benefit of as many people as possible. The panel will be chaired by a school governor who will report findings and recommendations back to the school, as well as acting as a co-ordinator for resolutions.

If you are interested in working on the panel then please come along to the meeting and help us in undertaking this vital work to help find optimal solutions to some of the issues that face us all.

Parish Guide - Where have you been? The Red Lion at Pendoylan, South Glamorgan

Have you found yourself on the M4 crossing South Wales, heading for the Pembrokeshire coast, in need of lunch, but not wanting to stray too far from the motorway? If so, the Red Lion at Pendoylan could be just what you’ve been looking for. I visited it on a Saturday in early March this year, to meet up with an elderly, epicurean Welsh relative. I was initially put off by its old-fashioned, unprepossessing exterior. Opening the door to the gloomy interior and large television screen in the bar area did nothing to allay my misgivings and I muttered to my husband ‘Bet they don’t serve wine’. However I was immediately wrong footed by the friendly welcome from a pleasant, Welsh bar maid and a rather suave French maitre d’ (I know it sounds incongruous). We ordered our meal in the bar from an interesting menu, divided into lunch and evening meals, but which they were happy to mix. We then chose drinks from a surprisingly good wine list! We were soon shown into the adjoining dining room, which sported a dark patterned carpet and bible-black wood beams and furniture. The food, which swiftly followed, was delicious and plentiful and the service was excellent and we heard no disturbance from the bar, despite Wales taking the Triple Crown! Curiously the pub has featured in the ‘lucky dip’ section of The Good Pub Guide for the last two years but not yet made it into the main part - the only reason I can think of is the desperate-for-a-makeover interior. The Red Lion is in a pretty valley, next to a church and about an hour and forty minutes drive from the Deverills, so about half way to picturesque holiday places like Solva. Pendoylan is two and a half miles south of junction 34 on the M4. Telephone number: 01446 760332. Apparently dogs are allowed.

The Strode Arms, near Shepton MalletMy next recommendation is much nearer home, in Somerset. The

Strode Arms at West Cranmore, near Shepton Mallet is recommended by Alan and Juliette Hardy from Kingston Deverill who put it top of their list for food. It is situated close to Cranmore station on the East Somerset Steam Railway and is a pretty inn with lots of character. They describe it as a charming pub slightly off the beaten track which is excellent for a casual lunch and even better for the evenings when it is essential to book at least a week in advance - their restaurant is well worth a visit. It’s about a thirty five minute drive from the Deverills, signposted off the A361 between Dean and Doulting. It features in The Good Pub Guide (under Cranmore) and offers a wide selection of dishes based on local produce. I have read that everything is home-made, including the bread, and is very reasonably priced. Dogs are allowed in the bar. -13- Nature Notes

“March winds and April showers bring forth the May flowers.” We have certainly had the winds and now we seem to be having the rain that we should have had in February; “February fill dyke”. The seasons appear to be all upside down. The birds and the flowers don’t know what they should be doing. The spring flowers come altogether nowadays. There used to be a definite succession of snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and then tulips, but now they can all be flowering at the same time. It does make for some spectacular shows. The churchyard at Longbridge has been looking gorgeous. I am sure that the increase in numbers of daffodil and snowdrop flowers is due to the careful maintenance of the grounds leaving the bulbs to die back naturally to build up a food store in the bulb for the following year before the grass is cut.

This last month has seen some interesting birds in our garden; a male siskin, tree sparrows (now up to 6) and a male brambling. Bramblings are winter visitors; they breed in Scandinavia, and rely heavily on beech mast to get them through the winter. When they run out of beech mast on the continent, they move south onto our shores, and as last autumn was a poor year for beech mast, they have come to us in good numbers. Bramblings often associate with chaffinches and it is difficult at first to tell them apart. The brambling is chunkier than the chaffinch, it has a thicker bill which shows up white, but more obvious is the orange brown shoulder (seen in both sexes).

The other evening when I cycled back up the road from the village I had an unexpected surprise; I saw a barn owl. It flew down to the ditch at the back of our farmhouse and hovered, then moved up the road towards Rye Hill cottages, crossed and carried on hunting along the hedge of the field opposite. It caused quite a commotion in the small bird population; lots of alarm calls. I then saw it through the hedge with something in its talons, a successful hunt. It then flew up high over the farm buildings and I lost sight of it. I expect it had been blown to us on the high winds, but hopefully if it likes what it found here it will stay.

I have noticed hares again. They seem to make themselves more obvious at this time of the year probably just because the vegetation is low. I love seeing them, with their black ear tips, racing away. I’ve not seen any ‘boxing’ yet this year. The badgers up the lane are becoming more active too. The female will have produced cubs by now. The badger is one of the mammals in which delayed implantation occurs. Mature sows come into oestrus directly after giving birth in February. Mating takes place with the boar during the 4 to 6 days of oestrus, and then the fertilised egg forms a tiny ball of cells called a blastocyst which floats free in the uterus in a state of suspended animation for a period of up to 9 months, before implanting in the uterine wall in December. There then follows a true gestation period of about 7 weeks so that the cubs are born late January/February. They remain deep down in the set until April/May when the weather is warmer and there is more food available. So the cubs that are born one year are in fact conceived the year before.
