PSALM RESPONSE O blessed are those

who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. (vv.3)

From the very time of His birth, Jesus relives the painful experience of His people in exile, humbled again and again. Today’s Gospel shows us this by telling us of the flight into Egypt and the murderous intent of Herod. The drama of these events unfolds before us in the following details: The angel who appears in a dream to Joseph after the Magi leave, and the flight into Egypt; The death of Herod and the “clandestine” return of the Holy Family, not to Bethlehem but to Galilee. With these events as background to the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, Matthew shows us Jesus, from His very childhood, as partaking of the fate of His people. Egypt, for Jesus, becomes a place of refuge, as it was for the patriarchs. The child, Emmanuel (God is with us) has already begun sharing the suffering and hardship of humanity he came to save and bring home.

Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us through your Son Jesus Christ: grant that, as he came to share in our humanity, so we may share the life of his divinity; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

GATHERING: Unto us a boy is born,King of all creation: Cradled in a stall was He, The Lord of every nation,The Lord of every nation.Cradled in a stall was he With sleepy cows and asses; But the very beasts could see That He the world surpasses, That He the world surpasses. Herod then with fear was filled: 'A prince', he said, 'In Jewry!' So the blameless children died The victims of his fury, The victims of his fury. Now may Mary's Son, who came So long ago to love us, Lead us all with hearts aflame Unto the joys above us, Unto the joys above us.Omega and Alpha He! Let the organ thunder,While the choir with peals of glee Doth rend the air asunder, Doth rend the air asunder.

OFFERTORY: Ding dong! Merrily on high In heav'n the bells are ringing: Ding dong! verily the sky Is riv'n with angel-singing.

Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

E'en so here below, below, Let steeple bells be swungen, And io, io, io, By priest and people sungen:

Pray you, dutifully prime Your matin chime, ye ringers; May you beautifully rhyme Your e'entime song, ye singers.

COMMUNION: The Virgin Mary had a baby boy The Virgin Mary had a baby boy The Virgin Mary had a baby boy And they say that his name is Jesus

He come from the Glory, He come from the Glorious Kingdom Oh yes, believer, oh, yes, believer He come from the Glory, He come from the Glorious Kingdom

The angels sang when the baby was born (x3) And they sang that his name is Jesus

The shepherds came where the baby was born (x3) And they say that his name is Jesus

The wise men saw when the baby born (x3) And they said that his name is Jesus

FINAL HYMN: See amid the winter's snow,Born for us on earth below,See the tender Lamb appears, Promised from eternal years. Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!Hail, redemption's happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Lo, within a manger lies He who built the starry skies; He who throned in height sublime Sits amid the cherubim.Say, ye holy shepherds, say What your joyful news today; Wherefore have ye left your sheepOn the lonely mountain steep?"As we watched at dead of night, Lo, we saw a wondrous light; [1] Angels singing peace on earth Told us of the Saviour's birth".Sacred infant, all divine, What a tender love was thine, Thus to come from highest blissDown to such a world as this.Teach, O teach us , Holy Child, By Thy Face so meek and mild, Teach us to resemble Thee,In Thy Sweet humility! FIRST READING A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus.

The Lord honours the father in his children, and upholds the rights of a mother over her sons. Whoever respects his father is atoning for his sins, he who honours his mother is like someone amassing a fortune. Whoever respects his father will be happy with children of his own, he shall be heard on the day when he prays. Long life comes to him who honours his father, he who sets his mother at ease is showing obedience to the Lord. My son, support your father in his old age, do not grieve him during his life. Even if his mind should fail, show him sympathy, do not despise him in your health and strength; for kindness to a father shall not be forgotten but will serve as reparation for your sins.

This is the word of the Lord. Eccles 3

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways!

O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways! By the labour of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper. R/

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. R/

Indeed thus shall be blessed the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life! R/

Psalm 128

SECOND READING A reading from Paul’s letter to the Colossians.

You are God’s chosen race, his saints; he loves you, and you should be clothed in sincere compassion, in kindness and humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another; forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you; now you must do the same. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and complete them, put on love. And may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, because it is for this that you were called together as parts of one body. Always be thankful.   Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home with you. Teach each other, and advise each other, in all wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs to God; and never say or do anything except in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.   Wives, give way to your husbands, as you should in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and treat them with gentleness. Children, be obedient to your parents always, because that is what will please the Lord. Parents, never drive your children to resentment or you will make them feel frustrated.

This is the word of the Lord. Col 3

GOSPEL A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St Matthew.

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’ When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are

dead.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, ‘He will be called a Nazarene.’

This is the gospel of the Lord. Matt 2
