As we are now in the Green Season of the Church for quite a while and can turn
our attention to another area of the Church—Days and Saints
Saints Days in September
Martyrs of New Guinea Day Monday 2nd September The New Guinea
Martyrs were eight Anglican clergy, teachers and medical missionaries killed
by the Japanese in 1942,
11th September Sister Esther, Founder of the Community of the Holy
Name who died in 1931. This community of Anglican women, dedicating
themselves to God’s work, was founded in England in 1888 to provide
spiritual and material aid to women. When Sister Esther came to Australia,
she set up a house in La Trobe Street in Melbourne providing soup kitchens,
schools and support to the poor. They also worked in prisons and
reformatories which eventually led to setting up a Retreat House which
operated until 2000.
Bishop Strong invited the sisters to go to PNG where they set up a high
school in Dogura in Oro Province in 1954. Later some of these students set
up the Community of the Visitation for PNG women which still has close links
to the Community of the Holy Name.
21st September Saint Matthew, Apostle, Evangelist and Martyr. He lived
in the first century and was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. He was a tax
collector in Capernaum and is the patron saint of tax collectors and
accountants. Not much is really known about him but he is said to have been
killed by the king of Ethiopia while celebrating mass.
29th September . St Michael and All Angels; He is the patron saint of
grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and the military. He is generally
depicted with a sword and shield standing on a dragon which represented
Lucifer. St Michael was one of the seven archangels who are depicted as
related to the seven days of the week: Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday),
Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Selaphiel (Thursday), Raguel or
Jegudiel (Friday), and Barachiel (Saturday). Michael was the leader of the
archangels and many Churches are named for him,
