    Dear Friends,

Perhaps by the time you read this you will have heard the song of the cuckoo once more, a sound that announces that spring has truly sprung. For the moment I will content myself with rapidly greening hedgerows and a garden that seems to be budding and flowering before my very eyes. Once again the miracle of new life unfolds and little green shoots push their way through the soil in the vegetable bed.

Biblical writers were acutely aware of the precious beauty of the natural world but they also had the greatest respect for it as well. Life for these nomadic people was hard and food, water and security were understood to be gifts to be treasured; there was no illusion or indeed expectation that life would be easy or that human beings had everything under control.

We live in uncertain times do we not, a time when peace and stability seem to be slipping away and we fear for a future in which volatile leaders make decisions that have far reaching consequences for the whole world order. Most of the time we are able to push any thoughts of our own human vulnerability firmly under the carpet and comfort ourselves that we in the 21st century are far more sophisticated than those biblical men and women, that we have progressed to such an extent that we are completely in control of our own destinies. Now and then a catastrophic event or series of events will jolt us out this complacent and arrogant assumption and I think the context we find ourselves in today is such a time.

Of course, our perspective on life is different to our predecessors. We live in a very different age. Unlike them our news channels supply us with graphic images of the human suffering of people thousands of miles away twenty four hours a day on a relentless roll of grief and loss; there is something awful about sitting watching all this in the comfort of one’s own sitting room.

So, I want to give grateful thanks for the fact that I live in this beautiful and peaceful place, I want to acknowledge that I lead an astonishingly privileged life and that I feel helpless in the face of the suffering I see in Syria and beyond. I want to admit to feel unnerved by world events but I also want to point to the Christian understanding of hope. However dark the world seems, and however impossible it looks, new life will ever appear, love will prevail in the end, God is in there somewhere. St Francis of Assisi encapsulated everything I have been trying to say with these words:

‘All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of one single candle.’ With love and prayers,

  • - 4 - Wylye Valley Art Trail 27th May until 4th June

The 2017 Wylye Valley Art Trail is nearly upon us. Painters, sculptors, potters, glass artists, jewellery and furniture makers, photographers and even a milliner are throwing open their studio doors to the art-loving public.

The Wylye Valley Art Trail is the largest and most diverse open studios event in Wiltshire, and takes place in some of the most gorgeous countryside this beautiful county has to offer. There are 73 venues in locations from tiny rural outposts to bustling market towns, all within a ten-mile radius of the centre of the Wylye Valley in south Wiltshire. Some artists are exhibiting in their own studios, others have grouped together to show in larger spaces, such as village halls and galleries. There are award-winning artists who have an international clientele exhibiting close by others who are just starting along their creative path, traditionalist landscape painters near abstract digital artists, glassblowers close to scrap metal sculptors, potters by jewellers; something to suit every taste and every budget.

Artists are mainly a fairly reclusive bunch, working often in splendid isolation; the Wylye Valley Art Trail offers the visitor the chance to meet the artist and discuss their creative world and the artist the chance to get direct and helpful feedback on their work. Many artists will be demonstrating their working techniques, and may even be encouraging visitors to have a go themselves in ‘take pArt’ sessions. It is easy to find out where you can ‘take pArt’ and how to plot your route around the venues with attractive brochures, available free from Tourist Information Centres, shops, pubs and other locations. They list all the venues and artists, giving directions, opening times and an illustration of what’s on view where. There is also the website: www.wvat.co.uk with all the brochure bumf, plus links to artists’ websites and the Wylye Valley Art Trail Facebook page.

There are 7 venues taking part in the Deverills and Crockerton area, showing Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Jewellery, Furniture making, Textiles, Ceramics, Wood turning and much more! Find out details at www.wvat.co.uk.

The Trail is free! It is an artist-led, non-profit project, organised by an enthusiastic team of volunteers. For further information please contact WVAT Coordinator, Laura Rich: 07910 736563 E: [email protected]

Wylye Valley Art Trail - Look and See art group I am delighted that my Look & See art group will again be exhibiting

their work at the Kingston Deverill Village Hall. This event is very popular and it is always a joy to welcome friends, families, neighbours and visitors. We enjoy talking to you about our work and offering you a cup of tea or coffee. Who knows, we may inspire you to pick up a paint brush, it is an enriching occupation! All details about the Trail are available on the website www.wvat.co.uk

Nature Notes The swallows are back in the stables; I first noticed them on 8th April, but

had seen one flying over the garden on the 6th April. It is lovely to have them back and hear them chattering, hopefully the house martins will soon follow. I have been listening to the lovely rich melodious song of the Blackcaps for the past 4 weeks. They usually sing from deep cover, it is a challenge to see one. The male bird does the singing, he has a black cap whilst the female has a brown cap. I located two singing males when walking down the lane towards the water meadows, near the church, the other afternoon. I have not yet heard a willow warbler, whose song is a lovely series of cascading notes. Chiffchaffs have been singing since February, some no longer migrate choosing to stay here over winter.

The resident birds are now deeply involved in nesting. Some have already got young; we have one pair of blackbirds feeding young now out of the nest. I watched a male blackbird feeding a youngster on the ground yesterday. The young are very vulnerable at this age and there was quite a commotion later in the day involving a magpie. Suddenly I was aware of a multitude of blackbird alarm calls, there were several blackbird pairs harassing the magpie in our neighbour’s copper beech tree. The magpie was obviously up to no good and the blackbirds chased it off, it was amazing to see how the blackbirds worked together. We have a pair of great tits building a nest in the box on our beech tree; I have been watching them taking nesting material in whilst washing-up. I think we have a pair of blue tits in the box on the silver birch tree, and from the noise they have been making there are house sparrows in one of the other boxes; I have seen them collecting nesting material and flying back in that direction. A pair of pied wagtails have been regularly feeding on the lawn, I expect they will be nesting nearby.

Mallard are daily visitors, 3 drakes and 2 ducks, a fairly stable pair and a trio of 2 drakes and 1 duck, anything but stable! Quite often there is loud quacking, flapping wings and splashing in the pond. The frog tadpoles we had have disappeared; but we now have lots

of toad tadpoles. A week ago a heron visited the pond in the middle of the day, it managed to catch a big fish before we shooed it away, but it was persistent, returning time and time again before getting the message it was not welcome.

The warmth that we had a week ago brought out more butterflies and I saw orange tip, brimstone and small tortoiseshell. I have seen bats flying in the early evenings over the garden. Finally, last month I commented on the daffodils in the village, now it is the blossom taking centre stage. The cherry trees are looking beautiful covered in white or pink blooms. In the hedgerows the blackthorn is a mass of frothy white flower and soon the hawthorn will follow.

Recipe: Asparagus Flan Ingredients 12 oz (350 g) asparagus 1½ oz (40 g) Cheddar cheese, finely grated 1 level tablespoon grated Parmesan 2 large eggs, beaten 284 ml carton single cream salt and freshly milled black pepper For the pastry: 1 oz (25 g) butter 1 oz (25 g) lard 4 oz (110 g) plain flour 1 oz (25 g) Cheddar cheese, finely grated a pinch of salt Method

You will need a 7½ inch (19 cm) flan tin with fluted edges and a removable base, lightly greased, and a 10 x 12 inch (25.5 x 30 cm) solid baking sheet.

Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 4, 350°F (180°C). Put the baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

First, make the pastry by rubbing the butter and lard lightly into the flour, then add the cheese and salt, plus enough cold water to make a smooth dough about a tablespoon. Then place the dough in a plastic food bag to rest in the fridge for 20 minutes. Then roll it out and line the tin with it, pressing the dough firmly into the tin. Prick the base all over with a fork and pre-bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove and paint the inside with a little beaten egg (from the filling ingredients) and let it cook for a further 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the asparagus by removing the woody ends, then arrange the spears in a steamer and steam over simmering water for 4-5 minutes until half-cooked. Then chop the spears into 1½ inch (4 cm) lengths and arrange them over the base of the pre-baked pastry case. Then beat the eggs together with the cream and grated Cheddar cheese, season with salt and pepper and pour the mixture over the asparagus. Finally, sprinkle the Parmesan over the top. Place the tart on the baking sheet in the oven and cook for 30-40 minutes until the centre feels firm and the filling is golden brown and puffy. • - 10 - Longbridge Deverill Parish Council

At the Full Parish Council Meeting on Monday 3rd April an update on implementation of Super-Fast broadband in Crockerton was given. Open Reach stated, as of 28th March, that the cab deployment for Warminster 7 has been delayed due to the Fibre Spine being 350m short across the main A350 dual carriage which may also have a Section 58 applied to it. Openreach have identified duct blockages which are in the carriage way that will need to be cleared, this will potentially require traffic management to access the carriageway boxes to identify location of blockages. Once identified they may need civil work to enable completion of spine. Openreach are looking into Section 58, as they are hoping this has now lapsed, this is to be confirmed. The new cabinet on Crockerton Green is built and needs connecting to the Fibre Spine for service. When predicted dates for clearing the blockages are known the Parish Council will be informed. Parish Council will continue to pursue the matter.

The Annual Parish Meeting took place on 11th April where the following organisations gave presentations: -

Longbridge Deverill WI offer a full programme of events throughout the year. Mother and Toddler group meet on Thursdays in term time 10.00 - 11.30 am providing a social and fun support network. Christian Aid Week 14th - 20th May 60th anniversary

Christian Aid was founded by British churches in 1945 to support refugees who had lost their homes and possessions in the Second World War. Twelve years later, Christian Aid Week was launched to help fund this ongoing work. Now our generation is rising to the challenge of huge numbers of refugees again.

Nejebar fled Afghanistan with her family after the Taliban threatened to kill her husband, Noor, who was a teacher. It was not an idle threat, - the Taliban first blinded, then murdered, another member of their family. ‘The last days and weeks in Afghanistan were the hardest,’ says

Noor. ‘When I went to work, not knowing if my family were going to be alive when I got back.’ Nejebar’s family are now stuck in Greece. When the family arrived at the refugee camp there, they thought they would only stay for 10 days. But they have been there six months and there is no end in sight. The only protection they have against the wind and rain is their tent. There is no school for their children. Five-year-old Suda is ill but Nejebar and Noor don’t know what is wrong with him because they cannot communicate with the Greek doctor. ‘We still have hope for our children’s future, we only want a peaceful life and our children to go to school.’

£5 could provide 2 nutritious meals for a refugee in Europe; £50 could buy a stove for refugees to cook their own food; £285 could buy refrigerators for a community kitchen in a refugee camp.

*Sunday 14th May at 10.30 am service at Kingston Deverill Christian Aid week will be launched. Donation envelopes will be available at the service and in all our churches during the week. Please give generously and return the envelopes to a church warden or Judy Munro, Christian Aid co-ordinator, or call 844385 and she will collect them from you. Thank you.
