Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you to all the generous individuals who have made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As of November 12, 2018, we have 251 donors who have pledged $66,113 towards our parish goal of $59,118. Over $53,000 have been collected thus far. Pledge envelopes are still available at the church doors and in the rectory. No pledge is too small and everyone can help our campaign succeed.

DE LA OFICINA DEL PASTOR

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear Friends, The season of Thanksgiving evokes warm feelings of generosity, compassion and good times. Under such ideal circumstances it is relatively easy to give God thanks. But when we look around us we can see that neither the world nor our own lives are as ideal as we would like, and it may be difficult to thank God. This is where the virtue of faith is truly essential, not only as a basis for thanks, but for hope and even charity. Take for example the story behind the great Christian hymn “It Is Well with My Soul”, composed by Horatio Spafford and Philip Bliss. Here’s the Wikipedia summary: In 1871, Horatio Spafford, a prosperous lawyer and Presbyterian church elder and his wife, Anna, were living with their four young daughters in Chicago. That year, the Great Fire erupted in Chicago, devastating the city. In November 1873, Anna and the children set sail for Europe aboard the S.S. Ville du Havre with a group of friends. Horatio stayed behind, detained by business. On November 21, the oceanliner collided with a British vessel and sank within minutes. Anna was rescued, but all the children drowned. Horatio received the tragic news in a telegram from Anna that read: "Saved alone. What shall I do?" Horatio immediately left for England to bring his wife home. Crossing the Atlantic, the captain of the ship came to Spafford and said that they were approaching the area where the ship went down that had his wife and daughters on board. There Spafford wrote the lyrics of the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul," the music being added later by Philip Bliss. Back in Chicago, the Spaffords tried to mend their shattered lives. In 1878, a daughter, Bertha, was born and, two years later, a son Horatio, who died in an epidemic of scarlet fever. Horatio decided to seek solace in the holy city of Jerusalem. In 1881, the Spaffords, including baby Bertha and newborn Grace, set sail for Ottoman-Turkish Palestine. The Spaffords settled in Jerusalem and helped found a group called the American Colony. Colony members, later joined by Swedish Christians, engaged in philanthropic work among the people of Jerusalem regardless of their religious affiliation and without proselytizing motives— thereby gaining the trust of the local Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities. During and immediately after World War I, the American Colony played a critical role in supporting these communities through the great suffering and deprivations by running soup kitchens, hospitals, orphanages and other charitable ventures. The hymn was a remarkable expression of faith at life’s very lowest imaginable ebb. Not only did their faith persevere, but they sowed seeds of great peace and harmony in a still-troubled area. Spafford’s experience can remind us that as Christians we place our trust in no human or natural events, but rather in the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ which shows us how deep is the Father’s love for us, in spite of any sufferings or failures. Our Thanksgiving is truly to the God who gives us goods beyond the limits of this life. Here are Spafford’s faith-filled lyrics:

Pero cuando miramos a nuestro alrededor, podemos ver que ni el mundo ni nuestras propias vidas son tan ideales como nos gustaría, y puede ser difícil agradecer a Dios. Aquí es donde la virtud de la fe es verdaderamente esencial, no solo como base para el agradecimiento, sino también para la esperanza e incluso para la caridad. Tomemos, por ejemplo, la historia detrás del gran himno cristiano "Está bien con mi alma", compuesta por Horatio Spafford y Philip Bliss. Jornada Youth Group The Jornada Youth Group of the parish would like to encourage all youth, ages 12 and above, to join their group and be part of the diocesan movement. We especially encourage those in religious education to attend so that they further understand and experience religion through talks, meditations, ice-breakers events and much more, all which is organized by our youth! The movement’s motto is: “Youth Evangelizing Youth.” Meetings at this parish are every Friday from 7:00pm–9:00pm. Parents are welcomed. RECTORY CLOSINGS

The parish offices of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Margaret Mary will be closed on November 22nd and 23rd in honor of Thanksgiving. The office at Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be open on Saturday November 24th (9:00am– 12:00pm), resuming regular office hours. The office of Saint Margaret Mary will re-open on Monday November 26th.

NO THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE DONATIONS We would like to remind our parish family that we do not accept food donations anymore. If you would like to make a monetary donation to the food pantry, you may drop your donation in the collection basket or leaving it in the parish office in an envelope marked “Food Pantry Donation”. Thank you for supporting our Food Pantry this month of Thanksgiving.
