Dear Parishioners, There is no question that the credibility of bishops, clergy, and church leadership has been severely damaged by the sexual abuse scandal. A recent Gallup Poll (2019) found that 37% of Catholics have questioned whether they should stay with the church. Even among those who attend every week, the number is 22%. That is up considerably from 2002, the year the scandal first broke. So what can be done to rebuild this credibility? Some think the church should become more aggressive in defending itself. They point to news articles that are misleading or often just wrong. For example, the recent Anderson report on church abuse in Illinois named over 400 clergy accused of abuse, some as far back as 70 years. Yet, when asked how many were still in active ministry, Anderson could only point out one. In the Springfield diocese there were none. In fact there has been only one instance in the last 20 years. Where these facts may help, they will do little to restore confidence. The problem is much deeper. Arguments and counterattacks alone will not restore credibility. More must be done. Here are some things I would include: - Leaders must take their cue from Jesus. He is the true leader of our faith. He walked among his people. He taught and healed and even wept with them. He willingly sacrificed himself for them. He was not about earthly honors or degrees. He rejected violence as a means of teaching the truth. He was humble and lived among the people. - Leaders must be visible. That Gallup poll I cited earlier pointed out that 86% of those Catholic who attended Mass weekly had great confidence in their pastors. The number declined in proportion to their attendance. When it came to Bishops, only 49% gave them the same confidence. Our leaders must make time to get out among the people if they want to restore credibility. -Leaders must be transparent. The idea that the our people cannot understand the teachings or policies of the church can be seen as condescending. Let them see and allow (as much as possible) for them to be part of the decision process. One never knows where God’s spirit, truth, or wisdom may be found. -Leaders must lead by example. The early church was often persecuted. The emperor, Nero, for example, accused the Christians of setting Rome on fire. Yet, despite the persecution and fear, the church grew. Why? because they continued to feed and care for the poor. The leaders were hands on. They lived what they preached. -Leaders must be people of prayer. To know God’s will, one must take time to talk and listen…listen…listen. Humility, transparency, visibility, authenticity, gentleness, and prayerfulness are the qualities that will establish the credibility to make the church succeed and grow. Leaders that portray these qualities will reveal the face of Christ to others. And isn’t that the role of the church…to make Christ visible in our world? Fr. Jeff
