Join Us in the Upper Room A few weeks ago, in my homily, I talked about the “upper room” experi-ence of those first disciples when the risen Lord appeared among them: Each Sunday, we have the “upper room” experience of those first disciples. The risen Lord appears in our midst and opens the Scriptures for us. The Body of Christ is made present in this assembly as we gather in his name. The Blood of Christ is poured out for us as we celebrate this Eucharist. I also talked about another “upper room” experience I had had during the great Halloween Blizzard of 1991: Those hours at Sweeney’s were like an “upper room” experience. The sense of joy and fellowship in the midst of this difficulty that had pushed us together – the sense of solidarity with all humanity – was palpable. Honestly, I felt as if the Body of Christ was present – had been assem-bled – on north Dale Street. And since it was the Feast of All Saints, maybe it had. It's true that we have an “upper room” experience every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. It’s also true that we can get a glimpse of the upper room in other settings as well. My neighborhood experience during that Halloween Blizzard was one example. I’ve also glimpsed it at a dinner party with dear friends in England, over a Sabbath meal with Orthodox Jewish friends in Jerusalem, with Catholics from around the world at Hawkstone Hall and the Ratisbonne Center, with a beloved fraternity brother after completing an especially grueling semester in college, and with good friends and chosen family at an orphans’ Thanks-giving feast. The list could go on and on. And sometimes these other “upper room” experiences can give us insight into our more regular celebration of the Eucharist. One great example is our annual celebration of Table Prayer here at Saint Thomas the Apostle. We gather with brothers and sisters in faith to share a meal, fellowship, and prayer. We sing, we talk, we drink, we eat, and we witness the Body of Christ gathered together in a way that’s similar to the experience of those first disciples whose celebration of the Eucharist might have been accompanied by a substantial meal. The sense of joy and fellowship and solidarity is palpable. If you’ve never joined us before, I hope you will this Wednesday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. in Dillon Hall. The official deadline for your response was last Friday, but an insider tells me that, if you call the parish office before noon on Monday, we may be able to fit you in. There’s no charge for the dinner, but we do need to know if you’re coming so we can plan accordingly.
