A Letter From The Rector Announces New Initiative

Dear People of Christ Church:

Where do I begin? From the trusted servants you have chosen to represent you—Search and Transition Committees, Staff, and Vestry members—to innumerable parish members who have greeted me, I cannot express how grateful I am for your warm welcome. My installation was such a wonderful night for Christ Church and for me. I am humbled by my good fortune to be your new Rector. What a terrifi c start to a new chapter for all of us. I also received a gracious welcome from your former Rector, Ned Prevost, via letter. He was, and you are, very kind. Thank you.

I want to take a moment to let you know of a new initiative that your Vestry will begin in mid-May. Starting toward the end of the month, Vestry members will divide up the parish list over the course of the year and take turns praying for each member of Christ Church once a year by name at Vestry meetings. That means that each of you will receive a phone call annually from a Vestry member. The purpose of that phone call will simply be to check on you and to ask this question: “When we pray for you and your family at the next Vestry meeting, is there anything special you would like us to pray about?”

The intent of this exercise is to lift each of you up in prayer and to remind us all why we are here and what our primary purpose is. We are, together, a fellowship in the love of God. Together, we have been given work to do by the Risen Christ, work that continues His ministry on earth. To do that successfully, we must do it together and we must do it with the assistance of the Spirit he gives to His Church. By praying for our members, we will be reminded that we are merely fulfi lling the new commandment that we received on Maundy Thursday night, to love one another as he loved us.

When you receive your phone call over the course of the next twelve months, I hope you will see it as a sign of the care God has for you and your life in Christ. I hope it will be an encouragement to you to renew regularly your devotion to the One who gave his full measure of devotion. I hope it will remind you of the love Christ has for you.

Many blessings to you as we all begin this journey together.

Peace, always,

Reverend Christopher Powell

Announcing Youth Adventure for 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders

The Christ Church book group has just started our new book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Please consider joining us! We meet on Mondays from 10-11am in the McClain Room of the Church House.

This book selection is a little different for us! We have decided to read the book everyone is reading, but with our own particular approach; that is, we will look for any themes having to do with Christianity. We will also bring in outside essays or articles about the book that may help provide insights. The Hunger Games is set in a future dystopian society in which the state sponsors televised fi ghts to the death between two teenage contestants. The story follows the struggles of young Katniss, one such contender, after she volunteers to take her sister’s place in the games. Our intent is to spend two or three weeks discussing the book.

Please plan to join us! Any questions, please contact Melissa Durbin, 446-8626 or [email protected].

The Hunger Games & Christianity??? You Bet.

Friends in Faith is meeting at a new time! Please come join us at 11 am in the Lea Room on Monday mornings for an hour. We begin each meeting with ten minutes of silent meditation, then our volunteer leader for that day presents a passage of a spiritual nature for discussion, and then we close by praying for all the people on the church prayer list. This is a great hour of fellowship, fun, and faith building. Come whenever you can - this does not have to be a weekly commitment. Any questions? Call or e-mail Elizabeth Clemmitt at (847) 853-8033 or [email protected].

Friends In Faith Sets New Meeting Time

Many people may not realize that Ascension Day is one of the seven principal feasts of our church year. The other six are Easter Day, The Day of Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, All Saints’ Day, Christmas Day, and The Epiphany. (More information about our church calendar can be found in the Book of Common Prayer beginning on page 15.)

Join us on Wednesday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. (The Eve of the Ascension) for Evensong. Choral music will be by British composers Samuel Sebastian Wesley and John Blow. This will be a beau-tiful service, and I hope many from our congregation will consider attending and inviting friends.

Last September 39 people signed up to participate in the parish foyer groups. Seven groups were formed and virtually all groups have met at least twice and will meet one more time before sum-mer begins. I have received overwhelmingly positive responses from participants. The Foyer Groups are a wonderful way to put names to faces and to form new friendships, especially for new parish members. Stay tuned for the announcement in the June parish paper about how to sign up for the foyer groups that will begin this September. Peace, Lucia Webster.

Christ Church, in conjunction with Renewal in the Wilderness, is pleased to offer a Men’s Retreat! The retreat will be a three-day canoe trip on the beautiful Wisconsin River from Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24, 2012. (No prior experience on the water is necessary.) Check out this link to the RITW website for more information: www.renewalinthewilderness.org. This opportunity for spiritual renewal will be led by Curate Jim Harrison and Renewal in the Wilderness founder, John Lionberger, and is designed to assist people in connecting with God in perhaps the most ancient of ways – in nature. Contemplation, companionship and conversation – all hallmarks of community relationships will be our navigational aids on our journey. The cost of the retreat is $450. There is scholarship assistance available.

Contact Jim Harrison ([email protected] or 847-446-2850) for more information and to register for the retreat. (Space is limited.)

Renewal in the Wilderness: Men’s Retreat in June

The stunning Easter Altar cross which was created for this year’s Easter Celebrations was a group creative process. Susan Green and Kristen Koefpgen saw an article on Easter fl owers at a Birmingham, AL church. Kristen worked with Rutledge Smith to build the cross, and with the Presbyterian Church in AL on the secrets of the mechanics and their cross, which was built in 1951. The fl ower guild worked on the execution of the piece along with all the other Easter fl owers which adorned the church. Susan said, “It was a group effort and one that I know we all enjoyed participating on.” The good news is that this can be used again and again.

Kudos to our Flower Guild

On Saturday, April 14 Christ Church’s Confi rmation Class, for the second year, joined with many other area residents to pack 100,000 highly nutritious meals for hungry people in Nicaragua. The event took place at Winnetka Community House and was sponsored by The Volunteer Center, Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfi eld, and Kids Against Hunger.

After donning very stylish hairnets, 16 8th graders and four adults made up two teams to fi ll, assemble, and pack meals. The meals consisted of a scoop of chicken fl avoring, a scoop of dried vegetables, one cup of soy, and one cup of white long grain rice. Each ingredient went into bags via a funnel, and the bags were then weighed and sealed before being packed 36 meals to a case.

After the service project the class walked to Church House and shared a similar meal as they refl ected on their experience. For the Confi rmands, it was a second way to participate in a feeding

ministry – all confi rmation classes also go to A Just Harvest in Chicago to serve meals. Upon refl ection it was found that for some the experience at A Just Harvest is more meaningful, primarily because of the interaction with the people who are actually being fed. For others, the Kids Against Hunger event was rewarding due to the sheer volume of meals provided and the camaraderie of the participants.

Confi rmation Class Helps Pack 100,000 Meals – Again!

Christ Church Vestry Notes March 20, 2012

Associate Rector’s Report: Associate Rector Jeanne Stewart reported that Ash Wednesday services had a nice turnout, with the Lenten Program also having good attendance. Burial service for Jackie Lang, a longtime parishioner. Planning for Holy Week is well underway. The ser-vices are all at 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Good Friday will have both a noon and 7:30 p.m. service. The Rectory Blessing was wonder-ful, and the Rectory renovation was fabulous. A plaque was dedicated to Jim Bayley at the Open House tour of the Rectory. This past Sunday we welcomed Christopher Powell as our new Rector with 450 – 500 people in attendance (82 people in the choir alone).

Outreach Report: Julie Flood reported on behalf of Nancy Free that Benevolence has been meeting on making distributions, and will report to the Vestry in May. The physical layout of Rummage will have to be adjusted because of the sale of the Winnetka Club, and will be accommodated with additional tents near the Rectory. The Soup Kitchen is doing well with additional volunteers. The “Let Your Light Shine” event was very successful, serving the needs of various shelters by providing toiletry kits, blankets, etc.. Outreach is considering a plan to fund a coordinated effort through the Soup Kitchen to provide toiletry kits to the clients of the Soup Kitchen. Meals at Home has recruited much needed additional drivers. The Food Pantry seems to be off people’s radar screen at the moment, and Outreach will refocus attention on the Food Pantry.

Formation Report: Shay Robertson was absent from the Vestry Meeting, and her written report was presented by Jeanne Stewart. The Lenten Program has been going very well. The Sunday Forums have had wonderful discussions. The Women’s Retreat in January was led by Heath Missner, to a very positive response. Jim Harrison is in the process of planning a Men’s Retreat in June. Jeanne encouraged attendance at the Friday morning 7:00 a.m. morning prayer service.

Global Mission Report: Jenny Smith reported that the mission trip to the Diocese of SE Mexico had to be cancelled due to safety con-cerns with the travel advisory issued by the State Department. The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper was attended by over 100 people, and was a kickoff to the “Pray, Care, Give” campaign to raise funds for the Renk Clinic in South Sudan. The Lenten In-gathering will take place on April 22, and will include a fair trade market with items from Ten Thousand Villages.

Member Development: Kathleen Lloyd-Jones reported that 3 new families have joined since the start of 2012. Two welcoming coffees for new members were well attended and very well received. The Welcoming Committee is in formation with good responses so far. The Lob-ster Boil in February was a huge success, with over 50 people in attendance. The Foyer Groups are ongoing. The Potluck Supper is upcoming on April 28 at Church House.

Communications: Julie Flood reported that she is thinking about the redesign of our website and is working with Scott Madlener who is a web designer, who will host the website, provide technical assistance and expertise. Molly Ethridge will remain in the role of creative designer. Julie is also working on obtaining interviews from local media and placing press releases on the arrival of Christopher Powell.

Stewardship Report: Doug Peterson provided an update of the Stewardship Committee. Total pledges are at $1,013.341, slightly lower than 2011. An additional $70,000 came in after the Annual Meeting, and one substantial anonymous pledge allowed us to balance the budget. Planning is underway for the 2012 stewardship campaign.

Treasurer’s Report: Jerry Hufton presented fi nancial statements through February, 2012. Total pledge income is ahead of pace, but it is a timing issue that we should not rely on. Other balances are trending properly at this point. Upon a motion made and duly seconded, the Treasurer’s Report was approved.

Transition Committee Update: Lawson Whitesides reported that the committee has been busy with a number of events – the celebra-tion to thank Ken Erickson for acting as our interim assistant, the recognition event for Jeanne a few weeks ago for her contributions during the period of transition, and the initial welcoming of Christopher Powell as our new Rector this weekend. The next big event is April 25, the installa-tion service at 7:00 p.m. for Christopher Powell as the Ninth Rector of Christ Church.

Respectfully submitted,Mary C. Downie, ClerkChrist Church Winnetka
